Soccer Time Killer of the Day
(Stolen form Twitter)
Name a starting XI and four reserves from your favorite team. The catch? Every position has to be from a different country. For my team, I'm limiting it to guys I actually can remember a bit.
Manchester United -
GK - David De Gea (Spain)
LB - Patrice Evra (France)
CB - Nemanja Vidic (Serbia)
CB - Jaap Stam (Netherlands)
RB - Antonio Valencia (Ecuador)
MF - Ryan Giggs (Wales)
MF - Roy Keane (Ireland)
MF - Paul Scholes (England)
MF - Juan Veron (Argentina)
F - Zlatan (Sweden)
F - Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
Reserves: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Norway); Park JI Sung (South Korea); Maroune Fellaini (Belgium); Tim Howard (USA!)
Toughest Omissions - Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney

Hard to argue with any of these selections, AB.
Maybe Pogba, but he just hasn't been around nearly enough as Evra.

I was going to do it for VGK, but they've only had either Canadians or Americans play defense and I'm not going to bump MAF from goalie.

Re: Soccer Time Killer of the Day
Liverpool's could almost just be the current squad
GK - Adrian - Spain
RB - Alexander-Arnold - England
CB - Van Dijk - Netherlands
CB - Lovren - Croatia
LB - Robertson - Scotland
MF - Keita - Guinea
MF - Shaqiri - Switzerland
MF - Salah - Egypt
F - Origi - Belgium
F - Mane - Senegal
F - Firmino - Brazil
Leaving out Alisson, Gomez, Wijnaldum, and Henderson is tough, and I don't think I've ever seen all 4 of Origi and the big stars play together at the same time.

Newcastle United Football Club (since I started following them in 2011-12)
GK - Martin Dubravka (Slovakia)
LB - David Santon (Italy)
CB - Fabricio Coloccini (Argentina)
CB - Fabian Scharr (Switzerland
RB - DeAndre Yedlin (USA)
MF - Yohan Cabaye (France)
MF - Cheick Tiote (Ivory Coast)
MF - Georginio Wijnaldum (Netherlands)
MF - Ayoze Perez (Spain)
F - Demba Ba (Senegal)
F - Solomon Rondon (Venezuela)
After compiling this list, I've given up on the reserves because I'm too depressed to continue.

MLS is fun to do this. Not many defensive options.
DC United
G - David Ousted (clearly you would go with Rimando or Hamid or Perkins etc but using DC United's only Dane is a good start).
D- Oneil Fisher (Jamaica)
D- Brilliant (France)
D- Ryan Nelsen (New Zealand)
M- Harkes (USA)
M -Etcheverry (Bolivia---over Jaime Moreno---hardest pick for me)
M- Andy Najar (Honduras)
M - Wayne Rooney (England)
F -Raul Diaz Arce (El Salvador)
F - Christian Gómez (Argentina --Over Acosta)
F- Luciano Emilio (Brazil--thought about Fred A.K.A. lesser Fred)
Dwayne De Rosario (Canada)
Dema Kovalenko (Ukraine)
Julian Büscher (Germany)
Hristo Stoichkov (Bulgaria)

Arsenal (2002-today)
GK: Jens Lehmann (Germany)
LB: Ashley Cole (England)
RB: Hector Belarin (Spain)
CB: Kolo Toure (Ivory Coast)
CB: Thomas Vermaelen (Belgium)
M: Freddie Ljundgberg (Sweden)
M: Aaron Ramsey (Wales)
M: Gilberto Silva (Brazil)
M: Thomas Rosicky (Czech Republic)
F: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon)
F:Henry (France)
Subs: Bergkamp (Netherlands), Alexander Hleb (Belarus), Bisan Lauren (Cameroon), Emmanual Adebayor (Togo), Andrei Arshavin (Russia)
Guys who need to be on the team but were bumped by nationality: Patrick Viera, Robert Pires, Robin van Persie, Sol Campbell, Cesc Fabregas, Santi Cazorla, Petr Cech
This was a lot harder than I thought, especially in midfield. So much incredible talent to choose from, but so many French and Spanish players. Shockingly only 2 Englishmen to debate between. Campbell is probably better than Cole, but the only other left backs I could argue are French and Spanish. Belarin not the best Spaniard, but I thought I could make do without a Spaniard in midfield.

Well done, overall... And, yes, this is a Sophie's Choice right here.

Re: Soccer Time Killer of the Day
Chelsea (only since 2014-15, although I'm counting some dudes who had already peaked by then)
GK: Petr Czech (Czechia)
LB: Cesar Azpilicueta (Spain)
RB: Branislav Ivanovic (Serbia)
CB: John Terry (England)
CB: Antonio Rudiger (Germany)
M: Mateo Kovacic (Croatia)
M: N'Golo Kante (France)
M: Christian Pulisic (USA)
F: Willian (Brazil)
F: Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast)
F: Eden Hazard (Belgium)
Man, Spain caused a problem. Without the country restriction, they would have had four starters (Azpi, Fabrega, Costa, Alonso), and top sub in Pedro. I had to eventually drop Costa and move Hazard and Willian up to the wings.
Other honorable mentions also to Moses (too many midfielders), Courtois (bumped by Hazard and Czech), and Matic (lost to Ivanovic)

Was Fabregas ever that useful for Chelsea? I always thought he kind of disappeared as the setup wasn't suited to him.Shirley wrote: ↑Wed Mar 25, 2020 2:24 pm Chelsea (only since 2014-15, although I'm counting some dudes who had already peaked by then)

Re: Soccer Time Killer of the Day
Me too. Broke my heart when he left, as he was in his prime. Henry leaving was bad, but I felt like it was the right move. He was on the down slide and Wenger sold him for full value.

Re: Soccer Time Killer of the Day
I certainly thought so. He's a defensive liability, but Chelsea's main problem in the years I've followed them has been converting possession and good buildup into real chances. Fabregas was the master of that. He could turn any random possession into a goal-scoring chance just the same way a great striker can.The Sybian wrote: ↑Wed Mar 25, 2020 5:39 pm Was Fabregas ever that useful for Chelsea?
