Re: Coronavirus - All Sports
The way all these franchises are handling this is abhorrent. How can the Bruins come out and say what they did ONE DAY after the sixers/devils group had to reverse course. It's really sickening that these people worth billions of dollars can't afford what, 5-10 million of losses to their personal wealth, to keep people paid.

I think it's pretty obvious the only way the NBA and NHL playoffs are going to get played is if the leagues think outside the box, so here's my proposal.
The leagues should work together and identify a single location to play all NBA and NHL playoff games in, in front of empty crowds. There would be a small handful of options, but the most logical for a few reasons is Las Vegas (not that many cases in Nevada relative to a lot of places and plenty of arenas in small geographic area with NHL/NBA sightlines for TV.
NHL playoff games to be played at T-Mobile Arena and Orleans Arena, NBA playoff games to be played at MGM Grand Garden Arena and Mandalay Bay Arena. All 20 teams (see below) to be housed and fed at MGM Grand, which will work with the leagues to identify and test however many employees are necessary to house the teams, their staffs, doctors, etc. All 20 teams will travel to Las Vegas by April 16 for initial then regular testing and a two-week "training camp". (Even the Golden Knights will be forced to stay at the MGM because of concerns about contracting the virus and putting to rest any nonsense about "home advantage")
Top 10 teams in each conference make the playoffs (for the NHL, just add two wildcard teams for each conference).
Playoffs will start on April 30 with two play-in games for each league (7 vs. 10, 8 vs 9).
Best of seven series start in each league on May 1 with four games played every day (two per arena). Teams will play every other day. Without the need for travel days, new series will start immediately every two weeks, meaning the finals in each league should be done before the last week in June.

Re: Coronavirus - All Sports
The logistical/pr problem that arises with that is that you’d have to test the players constantly to ensure no one was contaminated. It’s already a bad look that the players and celebrities seem to have access the public doesn’t Nd this would make that infinitely worse.

Re: Coronavirus - All Sports
That's actually a pretty brilliant idea. I just wonder if you could keep that many athletes on one place, especially Vegas, and not have them running around town. In a weird way, I think it'd be better to hold it in a city that is harder hit with the virus today, as the peak and decline will hit earlier and actually be a less risky location (I hope) in a month or 2 from now.brian wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 10:53 am I think it's pretty obvious the only way the NBA and NHL playoffs are going to get played is if the leagues think outside the box, so here's my proposal.

Yeah, though I think that's somewhat mitigated by the need to make sure the players aren't infected and infecting other players and players on other teams. I think whatever negatives you describe would be offset by the goodwill generated by giving people some sports content/something to do and watch.A_B wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 10:56 am The logistical/pr problem that arises with that is that you’d have to test the players constantly to ensure no one was contaminated. I think the only way this idea works is to the play the NBA and NHL playoffs in the same location by the way. If it doesn't work out (let's say a bunch of players end up testing positive even after all of the steps put in place to prevent), the playoffs and season would have to be cancelled, but if they don't do something in the next few weeks, that's gonna happen anyway. At least this way they tried.

I just don't see it. You can't effectively create a bubble, in my opinion. You can't just check them before they come in and say OK you're clean for good.

If you're testing all players and staff of teams to play games, you're just wasting tests.

Re: Coronavirus - All Sports
No, they'd have to be checked for fevers at least twice a day. It would be an on-going process for about 9 or 10 weeks. You'd be down 12 teams in each league after two weeks though, significantly reducing the chances of infection.

Re: Coronavirus - All Sports
For the NBA, I think the only possible solution is to get all the playoff teams together in Las Vegas or LA, play the games without crowds, and condense the postseason to single elimination for the first 3 rounds and best-of-3 for the finals.brian wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 11:05 am I think the only way this idea works is to the play the NBA and NHL playoffs in the same location by the way. Re: Coronavirus - All Sports
This seems so strange coming from you, to be honest. You can't call trump out for wanting to get people back to work and then say let's get the sports going again! Again, temp checks twice a day help, but no joke, you have to test EVERYONE EVERY DAY and hope the results come back. Not just the players. The refs, the tv crews, the security staff. Even without fans there are a bare minimum of people needed to run/televise such an event. And one positive test and we're done here. It's a pipe dream.

Re: Coronavirus - All Sports
Maybe, but I don't think there's any comparison to what Trump was proposing. Even with all of the support staff necessary, you're still talking about "only" a few thousand people living more or less in a bubble for a couple of months. I agree it's pretty fanciful, but not necessarily undoable.A_B wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 11:33 amThis seems so strange coming from you, to be honest. You could even sequester the support staff (assuming they agree to it and are compensated). The MGM Grand has 5,000 hotel rooms on its own. More than enough for the employees and staff to live there while they keep things going. (You'd be surprised how many tourists think the employees on the Strip live in hotel rooms to begin with.)

How much would you actually save by doing both sports in one location?

Re: Coronavirus - All Sports
Risk of infection mostly more than money. NHL/NBA could share costs on testing programs, security, etc.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 11:47 am How much would you actually save by doing both sports in one location?

Re: Coronavirus - All Sports
Also, I have to think if push came down to shove, the various TV partners (NBC, ABC, ESPN, TNT) would be willing to eat some of the costs and take some of the heat. Can you imagine the kind of ratings the NHL could get right now? It could be one of the biggest opportunities the NHL ever has to get its product in front of a captive audience worldwide.

Re: Coronavirus - All Sports
I would hope the players association for both leagues would tell the league to fuck off. Sure they want to play, but IMO it is very bad optics for the league. Just wait. One season missed. No big loss. Bigger loss if others either don't have tests that are being required for the leagues to make this happen, or if someone involved gets infected. Just not worth the risk.
To quote both Bruce Prichard and Tony Schiavone, "Fuck Duff Meltzer."
Re: Coronavirus - All Sports
I don't disagree with you guys, but if the NBA and/or NHL isn't currently gameplanning some kind of effort like I described, it's probably just best for them to announce the season/playoffs are cancelled and get on with the next league year right now.

That would involve refunds (or no interest loans from ticketholders) that they don't want to pay yet.

Re: Coronavirus - All Sports
Sure, but they're going to end up with more bad PR if they wait until May to call it after explaining they never really had a plan.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2020 1:56 pmThat would involve refunds (or no interest loans from ticketholders) that they don't want to pay yet.
I'd rather them kick the tires on a semi-legitimate plan publicly and say if we can't work it out by May 1, then we have to cancel the season instead of sitting in this limbo. That way they get to hang on to a month's worth of interest before the refunds and they can at least make it seem like they're trying to do something.
