"Mercury Blues" has been in my brain for a week or so now.

I'm guessing Mavis Staples wasn't available, but the ladies they recruited were superb stand-ins.
(and damn that's always a good song.)

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Re: Getting the spins
Damn, that was fantastic. And yes, it's such a great song. Whoever mixed that did an incredible job. I wonder, are most of those folks who contributed locally famous? Or just regular folks?
(I admit I actually teared up a bit listening to that. Maybe this apocalypse is getting to me.)

Lukas Nelson is a singer-songwriter and leader of a band, but better known for being Willie’s son.

I didn't know that. I like that Willie and I both named our kids Lukas with a 'k".

For you who might care, Margo Price is launching a radio show on youtube, starting tonight at 9:00 pm Eastern.
Also, on Sirius XM radio, the Outlaw Country channel (#60) will be the John Prine channel all weekend.

Re: Getting the spins
We cancelled Sirius since we're in all day and its kinda repetitive but signed up for Spotify. How do you all deal with the crushing weight of deciding what to play?
Re: Getting the spins
I make different playlists and handle it that way. I have 2020 one for albums and another 2020 one for singles. I have one called "Weekly Playlist" that i throw in music I want to revisit or visit for the first time as they come to mind or I read about them.
Once you build up enough for an algorithm, their playlists created based on what you listen to are really good. I've listened to so much music I never would've before if not for Spotify.

Yeah. Once you start choosing stuff to listen to the suggested playlists or discovery playlists are pretty good.
I felt aswirl with warm secretions.
Re: Getting the spins
And I renewed Sirius/XM because I was being an optimist and I got the same rate as last year, and I mostly use Spotify on desktop (during work) which other than the occasional commercial is the full feature set and content.

Re: Getting the spins
I went to cancel S/XM yesterday and they offered me $5/mo for a year so decided to just so that.

Re: Getting the spins
I like using the KEXP morning show for new stuff then Spotify for whims, in part because I don't trust that bands don't buy their way into suggestions, but I'm overwhelmed by whims. Might go back through Pitchfork's top 50 of 2004 or something for a little structure.Giff wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 11:09 am I make different playlists and handle it that way. I think somebody already noted this, but Ryan Bingham plays a different song every day on fb, and I always make time for that.

KEXP and NPR both host playlists on Spotify.

(I know that's not true, there's a lot of good less popular stuff, but boy do I hate the popular stuff that's come out since ... 1998?)

The Twilight Sad released a live album on bandcamp, using the 'pay what you can' model. I just downloaded it and it sounds great.

Re: Getting the spins
When we saw them on that tour, and they did 'Keep Yourself Warm' the singer got totally choked up during it, and stopped and said 'You don't need me...you know the song better then I do'. Very cool moment.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Fri Apr 17, 2020 2:50 pmOh yes it is. New one just dropped by my man Ray Wylie Hubbard, with some fancy guests - Chris Robinson, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Don Was

Re: Getting the spins
I find myself going on band binges. Either a band I love, or often one I don't know well. I'll start listening to all their albums from the beginning. I gained much more respect for the Beatles doing that a couple of years ago. For bands with a ton of albums, I'll just search out lists of their best albums and listen to those.
John Prine was a recent example of someone whose music I only sorta knew, but dove into for a few days.
And then, like folks mentioned, the suggested playlists get pretty good.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Getting the spins
I'm more on your side with albums or full discographies being more appealing than just singling around. Did a deeper dig into Spoon this weekend to see why they've never really clicked for me.

Have we talked about this before? I can't get into them either.

I don't believe so unless it was part of the larger "Bands I Should Be Into" list where everyone yelled at me about The Hold Steady.

Jimmy Eat World and Bethany Cosentino did a cover of one of my favorite Crooked Fingers songs for RSD over the weekend.

That was really nice.
Speaking of Spoon, they are kind of hit or miss for me, but I'll always love "The Underdog".
