Looks like the latest conspiracy theory that has bubbled up to Trump and is about to become an article of faith is that the number of deaths is being exaggerated when though if anything, it's likely being undercounted.

People have no ability to think independently. Just a depressing commentary on the state of political discourse. Just no reason for a politically aligned divide on those issues one way or another. Idiots just do what they're told... Unless they're specifically told to do it, in which case they resist.

The Swamp is very blue, just a matter of shading between solid and deep. Policy wise it seems to me the ones who post are all in agreement that the Dem party should be closer to the Bernie platform than anything resembling moderate. You fight mainly about the Candidates and their supporters but when push comes to shove you all basically agree on policy.degenerasian wrote: ↑Wed May 06, 2020 3:00 pmwhich is interesting because on this democratic leaning board here, I don't think we are 2%. Wife just had a call where the state health dept seemed to tweak their recommendations, now saying that if you were positive and recovered but someone else you live with subsequently tests positive, you should restart your two-week quarantine after they recover. That last part is new and seems to indicate doubt in post-recovery immunity.

In a similar vein, the military has just announced that anyone who has tested positive for coronavirus can no longer enlist in the armed forces.

They doesn't seem like a 'forever' ban, but moreso a way to prevent basic training from having outbreaks.
It makes sense because my basic training was being forced to live in confined quarters with 60 other dudes for 6.5 weeks.

Correct and I assume it's under an abundance of caution, but it does lend some fire to the smoke that there's concern that beating the virus doesn't lead to lifelong immunity.

Seems like a slippery slope for abuse. Having COVID at one point in time isn't going to be equivalent to having a criminal record is it?

Does it? Seems to me like it is communicating post-recovery uncertainty as to whether you can still be an active carrier to infect others, maybe?rass wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 11:35 am Wife just had a call where the state health dept seemed to tweak their recommendations, now saying that if you were positive and recovered but someone else you live with subsequently tests positive, you should restart your two-week quarantine after they recover. Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
I think concerns about that are premature, but at a minimum it should be making people think that the strategy of intentionally acquiring the virus to "gain" an immunity to it is misguided.degenerasian wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 11:46 amSeems like a slippery slope for abuse. Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
Very true. Everything is so damn wait and see about this.
It really should have a catchy name by now because it's exposed, to the core, the entitlement of so many people.
I can certainly understand the frustration of a stagnant economy and getting people back to work so bills can be paid and life can continue. But it also manifests in other ways that folks might not realize. It completely upended the deployment process and timelines. (Which is why I'm still here.) Quarantine plans need to exist all over theater now. But that doesn't stop some Captain or Major WHO KNOWS THINGS from being like "I'll quarantine at home before deployment" and shit like that.

One of the guests said prisons are gonna get hit hard with many prisoners dying from the virus without getting care. I'm guessing there will be prison riots this summer. This epidemic has exposed and then doubled down making it worse for every single flaw the United States has.

I'll agree with the above and add that during the height of the Iraq War they needed to throw bodies at bullets and significantly lowered enlistment standards.brian wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 11:48 amI think concerns about that are premature, but at a minimum it should be making people think that the strategy of intentionally acquiring the virus to "gain" an immunity to it is misguided.degenerasian wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 11:46 amSeems like a slippery slope for abuse. Suddenly tattoos on hands and necks were ok. Criminal records with certain infractions were allowed. Minimum testing standards went ever lower. Stuff like that.
When they need to continue the American Imperialism Experiment they'll find ways.

They are releasing lots of folks from jails here. I presume prisons are not the same but jails doors are open. The prisoners in the jails have calmed down. Lots of anxious calls earlier but they're used to it now. One of my clients found his way back to a different jail more or less immediately. He must have enjoyed it. They let him out of there too... With a bench warrant outstanding! Pretty hard to rot in jail these days for anything non violent.EdRomero wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 11:55 am Listened to this episode: https://www.wbur.org/onpoint/2020/05/07 ... sons-jails

And forget the summer. COs in the prisons here have been infected already.

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
If you want to hear a plausible conspiracy theory, I think the virus was more or less allowed to run rampant in the jails for the obvious reason that no one on the right and most people in general don't care about inmates, but that the feds will use it as an "opportunity" to study captive populations where close to 100 percent of the environment has contracted the virus to try to accelerate vaccine work and other studies.

I wouldn't even put "conspiracy" in front of that theory, at least in the way that that particular phrase is used. If "conspiracy" means more than one person working in concert, sure.brian wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 12:26 pm If you want to hear a plausible conspiracy theory, I think the virus was more or less allowed to run rampant in the jails for the obvious reason that no one on the right and most people in general don't care about inmates, but that the feds will use it as an "opportunity" to study captive populations where close to 100 percent of the environment has contracted the virus.

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
It's a conundrum. There've been lawsuits over the issue here in California, and when they established zero bail for certain offenses, and let a bunch of non-violent offenders out of jail, they had comical results.
Officers in Los Angeles County arrested and released a suspect three times in one day after he was repeatedly let go based on the zero-bail policy that California has put into effect due to the coronavirus pandemic, police said.

Re: Not so funny real life Capt Trips thread
I heard an interview with a female inmate on Alex Wagner's podcast Six Feet Apart. They took no measures to protect any of the inmates, and inmates exhibiting symptoms weren't tested and remained in the prison. She was one of a handful of inmates told they were eligible for early release, but none of the inmates were sent home or given further information. I can't imagine working in a prison right now. My daughter has a close friend whose father is a prison guard. Seems like a COVID sentence going into work. Fuck that.

Yeah, anyone with half a brain realizes that's why the preparation for this was botched. I think my rule of thumb is violent and/or predatory. I see the argument for dealers being in prison but absolutely not users.

This is also why reporting of total month over month total death variances, with stuff like auto accidents controlled for, is vital.brian wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 12:47 pmYeah, anyone with half a brain realizes that's why the preparation for this was botched. He has no ability to think strategically long term. He says whatever will make him look best in that exact moment without thought that tomorrow he will say the exact opposite. It's like he is the guy from Memento with no ability to retain new memories. I feel like he genuinely believes he doesn't constantly contradict himself, like he is only capable of processing the present moment. He wants low numbers today even though that would mean greater deaths and longer economic recovery time long term, because it makes him look better today. Not a good quality in a President.brian wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 12:47 pmYeah, anyone with half a brain realizes that's why the preparation for this was botched.
