Happy New Year Swamp....

Post by DaveInSeattle »

Jumping the gun just a bit....

Anyone with big plans tonight? I've gotten to where I hate going out on NYE. Not just the "Amateur Night" aspect, but I hate being on the road. So for me its a quiet night at home with my younger kid, making dinner, and probably watching a movie. My older kid is at a friends house for a sleep over.

Happy New Year to all my SwampMates!

I'm not even quite 30 (yet...less than two months!) and I refuse to go out for NYE. I'm not driving over to Lauderdale to stand in giant crowds.

Hanging out at the in-laws' in rural Missouri. Doesn't get much quieter than this, although we do have some good drinks on hand, at least. HNYS!

I'm on call; getting paid to stay at home. Granted, I would have unquestionably stayed at home anyway because I am not the least bit interested in NYE. Like Dave, I don't wanna be out on the roads. And I don't want to be in a bar or at some hellawful dance. Or, worse, at some function where severely drunk people I hardly know attempt to bellicose close-talk at me all evening leading up to a pointless whooping when a clock rolls around to some designated minute and its slurring of Robbie Burns. I don't have anything against drunks but, let's face it, only other drunks can deal with the social performance of drunks; a sober guy who is not making a documentary about the folly of humanity is simply not going to enjoy that one bit.

And I can say quite honestly that this evening is nothing more than Tuesday to me and tomorrow is nothing more than Wednesday.

So happy Wednesday Day Eve, eh!

Sitting here sipping on a Bulleit bourbon and watching the future Cleveland Browns quarterback play in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Living the dream.

Happy New Year, my fellow Swampers.

GBJ, I had quit on NYE before I was 30yo. Maybe before I was 25. So many horrible nights. So many goofballs being drunk and goofy. I am doing my usual paean to pork and black-eyed peas. Ham, bacon drippings, a ham hock and some smoked pork shoulder, all tossed in. Old black negro coloured tradition states if your first meal of the New Year is 'Hoppin' John', you will have good luck the whole year. Sopped up with some cornbread (made with bacon drippings and chopped bacon. I said it was a paean to pork.)

TV marathons of The Twilight Zone and The Honeymooners have given way to Walking Dead and Breaking Bad. Times change.

Happy 1984! (and Fuck the NSA!!!!)

My 9 year old insisted on staying up until midnight. What can I say, I'm a softie, and its awfully nice to ring in the New Year with her instead of with a bunch of drunken Aussie yahoos in Hobart (don't get me wrong...that was a lot of fun as well).

The cool thing was that KEXP did the music to go with the fireworks from the Space Needle. So we got Ramones, Band Of Horses, Pearl Jam, Jane's Addiction and Macklemore. Pretty cool.

Now the kid is in bed asleep and I'm relaxing with a whiskey from a micro distillery down in Oregon.

Nice little evening in with the wife's family. All the kids downstairs playing cards/video games. The adults upstairs enjoying some drinks and a game of Cars Against Humanity. Now a finger of bourbon and the quiet hum of the cooling fans.

Happy 2014 gents, all I know is I am happy I finally gainfully fully employed and I have friends like you folks.

Just got home. My good friend throws a great NYE house party every that's fun to go to but getting way too crowded.
Other than receiving a few kisses at midnight, it's so loud you can't hear yourself think. His social circle has gotten much bigger while I still just know him.

Happy 2014 Swampers!

Sportswise, It's a bad week to be at my in-laws. They aren't fans and don't have cable TV. Soo... For example, no espn, but, right now, Wisconsin/South Carolina is on ABC, and the NHL winter classic is on NBC. But, my father-in-law has the tv on TMZ/Inside Edition. Guess I'll take a shower.

I'm usually not one to go out for New Year's either, but the girlfriend's friend was also turning 30 at midnight last night, so we went to a small NYE/birthday party at her house, about five minutes from the girlfriend's. I was home and in bed by 1, seeing as how I had agreed to work the morning shift at the website. Happy New Year all!

Yeah, I needed to play the lightweight card as well, which was fine. Three beers over four hours and out the door of the bar at 12:15. It was perfect.

Ich bin ein Berliner.

The Brandenburg Gate experience was crazy last night.

I'm staying at a spot within walking distance I was able to book via Airbnb. This had been an awesome trip so far.

Quiet New Years - made dinner for the wife and kids, and an evening of playing board games, with not much drinking at all.

Then at 12:15, a couple of teenaged girls from the neighbourhood came by and asked my 17 year old son if he wanted to hang out with a few kids. He got home (I think) about 3:30.

The torch has been well and truly passed.

We are all old and boring. About two dozen people were out sledding around the neighborhood, we did that for a while, then turned in. First time I actually stayed up until midnight on NYE in years.
