Bears sign Cutler to deal through 2020 season. Haven't seen any official number, but supposedly his salary is $18M the first 3 years, which would probably put the total deal at around 7 years, $105M or so.

Had arguably the nest season of his career this year under Trestman.

Basically, they had to do it. With Cutler and Matt Slauson, whose contract was also announced today) back in the fold, the only starter not definitely returning next year is center Roberto Garza. And with the skill position guys of Forte, Marshall, Jeffery, and Martellus Bennett, there was no other logical way to go. Free agent QBs are slim, as pretty much always, and anyone thinking that bringing back McCown for a year or two on the relatively) cheap and drafting a QB early was a good idea is a dullard. Marshall's contract is up soon and Jeffery's soon after that, so they couldn't let their time under contract go to waste.

Flacco's mediocre performance this year probably hurt Cutler's value, too, but only one of them has a Super Bowl ring to drive up his price, too.

Lions interviewing Jim Caldwell on Friday. Praying that it is just a Rooney Rule interview. As one of my friends said after learning the news "Anytime you can hire a guy with a 28-77 head coaching record without Peyton Manning as your QB, you have to do it."

Mike Munchak has been sacked by the Titans having refused to replace Jerry Gray with Gregg Williams at DC and for refusing to sack OC Dowell Loggins.

He was about to enter the last year of his contract anyway and it's a little sad to see Munchak leave the franchise after 31 years of service. The whole staff will now also be fired, although it will be interesting to see if they keep Gregg Williams on in some capacity.

To be honest, I am happy to see the end of anyone associated with Jeff Fisher, the franchise needed a big shake up and hopefully a decent coaching staff can be found.

Mike Tanier wrote a very good piece on the Cutler contract, including some historical context of Bears' quarterbacks and the Bears' current situation.

It's a pretty fair deal for the Bears. He's essentially getting paid as a league average QB and he's obviously much better than that.

As an added bonus, his deal is essentially a three-year deal plus four one-year team options. Wouldn;t be surprised to see a potential "QB of the future" drafted this year or next for Trestman to mold and create an option.

Very pleased to read that Josh McDaniels withdrew his name for the Browns' head coaching job. Supposedly he withdrew because the team wouldn't confirm he was the front runner for the job, which seems a bit silly to me.

Anyway, thank goodness we can get some no-name punk to become the new head coach instead.

What did you fans think of Chudzinski, from the snippets of player reaction I've heard it seemed like he was well respected in the locker room. I wonder if he caught the GM and owner with their hands in each other's pants or something because they had a pretty competitive team with basically no RB and a revolving door at QB.

Supposedly the front office was all about Hoyer, Chudzinski/Norv weren't, and then when Hoyer finally played and blew up it created a faction.

I was happy to see Hoyer play well, but at no point did I ever think...FRANCHISE QB!

Yeah but if they guys you had in charge were telling you "Hoyer can't run our offense, this is the Weeden and Campbell show", and then Hoyer looked competent, you might think they suck. I guess. Still a weird firing.

Very weird, especially after Haslem talked about how awesome the steerles organization was with stability. More to the story I'm sure.

Ken Whisenhunt to become the Tennessee Titans' new head coach.

Reports are Jim Caldwell is the leader to get the Lions' job.

Additional reports indicate no one wants the Browns' job.

Here it is folks, the first article mooting my fear - that Norv Turner will take over the Browns.

http://www.goerie.com/article/20140112/ ... est-option

And goerie.com is never wrong about anything.

But this quote is true and it terrifies me:
No, Turner isn't a home run. But at this low point in their existence, the Browns need to be contact hitters.

Jeez, Norv has failed at more head coaching jobs than anyone. Did they even try to interview Lane Kiffin?

Any time you can hire a guy with a 28-77 head coaching record when he doesn't have Peyton Manning as his quarterback, you HAVE to hire that guy. I swear to God the Lions could fuck up anything.

Whoever the Lions hire will still be better than whoever the Browns hire.

Norv might let you get to first base, but that's about it. If the Browns want to go all the way, they should hire Rob Ryan.

The most hilarious part of the Browns' coaching search has been the constant screaming from the Bucknuts that Jim Tressel should be the next coach.

Well, in fairness, Stafford is closer to Manning than he is to Curtis Painter, Orlovsky or 40-year-old Kerry Collins.

From your lips to God's ears. I'm not as sure these days. At worst, he's probably a serviceable Trent Dilfer, Marc Bulger type that you can win with. I'm more concerned about Caldwell's performance at Wake Forest where managed to win 26 games in 8 years. I know it's Wake Forest and all (no offense, Brockett), but c'mon.
