My mom found a printout of an email he sent me Freshman year of college, telling the story of how he was surrounded by several Pittsburgh police officers, beaten over the head with a baton and thrown in jail for the night. By his own accounts, he deserved the beatdown and the arrest, he was being a drunken idiot and taunted the police for no reason. One of the funniest stories I've ever read.

Anyways, I mentioned him a while back, because I saw a picture of him on FB, and he looked a lot like Bubbs from The Wire (strung out heroin addict, but if you haven't seen The Wire yet, watch it now!!!). Brilliant kid with a full scholarship to Pitt, dropped out due to excessive drug use. Followed our neighbor from Pitt to Bellingham, WA where he is driving a cab 25 years later. I think my mom said he got married at a Phish show in Mexico a couple years ago. Breaks my heart, as he was not only brilliant, but the most purely athletic kid I knew. Same kid who smashed his face on the trampoline in my story yesterday.

One of the smartest kids in my graduating class decided to be a mail carrier in Texas. Its only heart-breaking if he's not happy doing it, right?

Yes. There's no dishonor in a non-"professional" job.

Only because it's been legislated that way. If they didn't have to prepay into benefits (unlike any other institution) they'd be making gobs of money.

To answer the question directly: No. (However, it's probably a huge topic at Travis AFB though.)

If we chit chat about news stories relating to the Air Force amongst ourselves in the office that would be the extent of it, but there certainly isn't a daily brief pushed to everyone about issues such as this. And our main mechanism for discussing topics like this would be commander's calls, but we're still social distancing.

Like, for example, the other day an F-15 from Lakenheath crashed and the pilot died. A couple weeks ago a C-130 crashed off the runway in Iraq, I believe. Neither of those have been briefed either. We just all have to be mindful and read the news.

One thing I do want to nitpick about: the media makes it seem like everyone in the military is "highly trained" and all that. This dude sounded like he was a Phoenix Raven. If so, just say it. That description in the tweet reeks of pretentiousness from the reporter who wants to jazz up the story. The program does have an "eliteness" to it, but the bottom line is they are Security Forces members who are traveling plane protection. They know advanced combatives and go to scary areas with planes! Oh boy!

Reminds me of the Security Forces team from FE Warren a few years back that were caught up in a cocaine ring and they were "a highly trained unit that defend the nation's nuclear arsenal." Uh, sure, they defended nukes. That's a matter of where they are stationed. But you'd think they were railing lines off of the nukes themselves with the way it was reported at the time.

Is what they did illegal in Missouri?

Not really. Could technically be considered assault and I imagine there might be laws on the books about mishandling firearms though I wouldn't know about that. Still seems unlikely they'll face any legal jeopardy.

Waving a gun around at unarmed people on the sidewalk isn't some kind of misdemeanor? Isn't that, like, basic "assault" territory?

From years ago when I took my conceal carry class in Arizona, yes that is assault. Making a "menacing gesture" while armed is considered assault. So let's say you were open carrying and decided to bow up on someone and they felt threatened, you'll get arrested. When you have a firearm in your possession and do dumb shit like this you put yourself at risk for an arrest.

It's why "Blue Lives" don't really matter to me.

Each state's rules are different, obviously. They are on their own property, so the castle doctrine may come into play, but it sure looks like they're committing assault.

Deadass looks like he bought a military surplus weapon and went shopping at an officer's club garage sale or something. It's top notch.

There is one picture of him holding the weapon with one hand on the handguard (the part under the barrel, I had to look it up) which really tops the ensemble.

Wouldn't think so. Also, castle doctrine might just be whilst INSIDE your house. Not sure if MO has stand your ground laws, and how liberal those are.

this is a good look at how Missouri's laws -- and their street potentially being considered "private" -- play into the stupidity

Glad to see no mention of Stand Your Ground in that article. It's essentially taken the castle doctrine and expanded it to any time one feels threatened.
