The rookie sensation is a captivating character for sports fans, a blank canvas for the imagination. The young ballplayer with uncommon talent inspires awe, even among the greats.
So it was for the teenage Claudell Washington, who joined the Oakland Athletics in the summer of 1974, when he was 19, and fit seamlessly into their lineup. That October, he hit .571 in the World Series to help the A’s win their third championship in a row, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ian Holm.
Arguably, best known for playing Bilbo Baggins in the LOTR Trilogy, but had a spectacular "that guy" career for decades.
If you haven't seen The Sweet Hereafter and you feel like crying for a couple of hours, check it out. Absolutely incredible movie.

The Sweet Hereafter is first movie I thought of when I saw he passed. I've never been able to bring myself to watch it.

I'm not the best person to say it because I do it too (avoid great movies with uncomfortable subject matter), but it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. Like top 20 easily. Top candidate for one of those great movies you can really only watch once though like Requiem For A Dream, etc.

The fact that the first movie you mentioned about watching only once is my go-to example for movies I can watch only once means I'll give it a shot.brian wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 9:31 amI'm not the best person to say it because I do it too (avoid great movies with uncomfortable subject matter), but it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. FWIW, I golf with Sarah Polley's ex-husband.
And "The Sweet Hereafter" is a film that I just can't get up the nerve to watch.

Joel Schumacher, director of The Lost Boys, Batman Forever, St. Elmo's Fire and not afraid to throw some grease on an actor, especially in A Time To Kill, the greasiest, wettest movie ever made.
ETA: To clarify he directed one of the shittiest Batman movies.

OK, I'm probably one of those people who unfairly held those two Batman movies against him. Because he made a lot of films that I really liked. I'm pretty sure I have Falling Down here somewhere. That might be an interesting watch these days.

Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
No, you should absolutely hold those movies against him. Those movies were even campier (and dumber) than the 1960's television show.
He's directed too many things for "The Lost Boys" to be a clear top five movie on his resume. That's a good, enjoyable movie, but has a lot more camp and subversion going for it than what there should be for a commercial/major movie studio director.
“All I'm sayin' is, he comes near me, I'll put him in the wall.”
Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
I saw someone on Twitter express it as "very few directors have made as many good movies and as many bad movies" as he did. Even if the Batman movies were a miss, he wholeheartedly swung for what he was aiming for with them.

He was unapologetic in his real life and in his movie-making and there's something to be said for that.

Obviously, that video never gets made today. It was difficult to watch, just so creepy! How was that ever acceptable? I mean, the song opens with "she's just 16 years old, leave her alone, they say" so it opens with acknowledging the inappropriateness of the relationship. Jesus. Then factor is that he looks like Iggy Pop part way through transitioning into a female and it's just more weird [yes, I realize the unwokeness of this sentence, but fuck it. Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
The Pakistani Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan broke the news which found 40% of pilots in Pakistain have fake pilot licenses, this follows an investigation that was launched back in February 2019.
Mr. Khan stated that “The inquiry which was initiated in February 2019 showed that 262 Pilots did not take the exam themselves” and that they had asked someone else to sit the exam on their behalf
Don't know if anyone here followed the A320 crash, it appears the pilot came in high and hot, landed on the engines, tried a go around but the engines were so badly damaged by the first "landing" that they flamed out and the plane came down short of the runway at the second attempted landing.

I shared an elevator with Charlie Daniels in Vegas, must have been close to 30 years ago. He didn;t look very spry then.
