If you read twitter, it sounds like a few of the younger players were going out to bars and caught it, (1) putting teammates (including atleast one mom and a cancer survivor) at risk and (2) costing everyone else their season. Seems like a good summary of the national situation.

Yup. Imagine how bad it’ll be with spoiled rich baseball players. All those legends about players sneaking out to break curfew?

Serves him right. Djokovic held this tournament to defy COVID. Players were shaking hands and hugging even more so than during a regular tournament in the past, to prove a point.

yup. But based on the behavior of 6 Orlando pride players going to a bar...the chance that 175 lacrosse players and coaches not bringing it to Utah seems really low.
1.) They will all have to get to Utah
2.) Those players are big Gym rats.
3.) 90% have full time jobs which they are taking off 3 weeks/working remotely during the event. Some in occupations that were probably essential (feels like most of the Canadian pros are firefighters)
4.) Lots of the players run camps and clubs...many in towns which have opened up practice/training.

Oh, I'm not worried about these guys bringing Covid to Utah. We already have higher rates right now than most states.

My daughter returned to soccer practice last night. Other than the temp being 93 degrees, they did a fantastic job of distancing the players. One gate used for entering the field, another for exiting, so teams wouldn't come withing 30 feet of each other. 10'x10' grids on the entire field, every other grid vacant, so they never came within 10 feet of each other. They had to bring their own ball, wear a mask to and from the field, but take off during practice. They had to keep their water and bag within their grid, so they didn't leave their grid for the entire practice. They were dismissed one at a time to avoid contact, and parents were required to stay in their cars. We parked far away and went for a walk, because I wasn't sitting in the car the whole time, but we parked in a different lot before getting out. 2 more weeks like that, then they can practice in small groups. Coaches kept their masks on the whole time, I think.

Just got here and saw that tweet for the first time and my immediate thought was "I like these odds." I would think the crystal football on the trophy should be changed to a crystal COVID (a picture of the virus could be the print version of the asterisk, as well) to differentiate between 2020 and 1959 in the trophy case.

I feel bad for the top player from this year's squad who would die from leukemia in 2023 in this scenario, following Ernie Davis.

Since my kids had no interest in watching this with me I’ll note that Morgan Weaver (#22) on Portland is apparently 5’10” and maybe it’s because her shorts seem to be a little shorter than everyone else’s but she has really long legs.

Ivy League "98 percent certain" it's moving football season to spring.

I wouldn't be surprised to see G5 schools agree to do the same here soon* and leave the Power Five on their own to play in front of empty stadiums in the fall or follow along and move to the spring. There is not going to be any sporting events played in front of crowds in this country until spring 2021 at the very soonest.

* - They make almost no money from TV contracts and can afford to roll the dice on maybe being able to play in front of ticketed fans from March to May.

My son's college (Swarthmore) announced yesterday that they are only inviting freshman and sophomores to campus this fall. And no fall sports at all.

It'll be interesting when this is all settled to look back and see the difference between the decisions of D1 schools and D3 schools of how and when they bring students back. There's no way that football money isn't driving a lot of these decisions.

BTW, not only is Swarthmore D3, but they don't have football. Their only monetary influence is student tuition.

True BUT sports fall into the tuition calculation. Don't forget that many D3 schools like Football & Lacrosse and such because it brings a significant number of full tuition students to the school. One of the big reasons for athletics growth at the D3 level. So with D3 rules do you now get a handful of students who take a sabbatical year instead. Losing a year of on campus experience for the price of what school costs and potentially losing a year of playing...lots of kids at Swarthmore could get an internship/experience/volunteer and then go back to on campus....Guess some kids would shoot for a shot at D1 grad school for a 5th year of playing...but that is tough.

Guessing the Jr. and Seniors are not getting discounts on tuition.

That's the decision my son and all other Swarthmore students have to make now. Do this plan (the current plan is to swap the spring - freshmen and sophomores at home, juniors and seniors at school), just stay home and do all virtual classes, or pause his education for a year. It's not an easy call (although he has no interest in a fully virtual year).

Speaking of which...

USC reverses robust fall reopening plans, asks students to stay home for online classes
Amid the alarming surge in coronavirus spread, USC announced it will no longer bring all undergraduates back to campus for the fall semester and will move to mainly online classes, reversing an earlier decision to welcome students back for a hybrid model.

The decision, announced by Provost Charles Zukoski late Wednesday night, came the same day Gov. Gavin Newsom announced tougher restrictions on indoor activities. Zukoski recommended that students not return to campus for the semester and instead continue their education online.
Nothing in the story about the impact on fall sports, but I don't see how you can expect football players to be on campus when no other students are.

Them guys get nothing except an nfl tryout if that. I fully expect that kids will readily accept low risk of death for that nfl tryout. Came this far to D1 SEC starter and you want me to do what? Run through a covid infested brick wall, that's what.

Maybe, maybe the Power Five conferences might try to play football without fans. They're going to have to reschedule a lot of games though because FCS teams won't be playing and even the MAC/SunBelt/C-USA probably won't.

So....do we have a golf thread somewhere? Because I was just reading about Bryson DeChambeau winning this weekend and one thing jumped out to me....that he came back from the Virus layoff having put on '20 lbs of muscle'. Does the PGA have PED testing? Haven't we learned from baseball that when a guy comes back from the offseason having put on '20 lbs of muscle' that it is always because of steroids/HGH?
