They were doing rather well *at this particular time* four years ago.
Steve of phpBB wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2020 6:13 pmIf certain folks had their way, the Dems would be running on an ambitious Democratic Socialist platform promising to remake the entire health care industry, raise taxes, and fundamentally reshape society. For better and for worse, the Dems aren’t doing that. But if they had, “reaction to Trump” might not be the driving force in the election.
What if, instead of running solely on "we're not him", you run on "we're not him and we'll enact popular policies to your benefit"?

Hillary was about +2.5 on CRP tracker at this time last year. Biden is +9.1 last I saw.

Weren’t there also a lot more undecideds and third-party leaners?

Edit - And didn’t Hillary finish real close to +2.5?

I ask because responses vary greatly depending on whether folks are told about tax increases and elimination of private insurance.

Here’s a link to the KFF report from May 27. https://www.kff.org/slideshow/public-op ... -coverage/

According to that snapshot, KFF has people favoring “single-payer” 56-41. But if you read the article, support drops when you bring up the other issues, 2/3 of people who support single payer believe they’ll keep their private insurance, and even Democrats prefer building on the ACA to replacing the ACA with M4All, by a margin of 55-40.

Also, a public option, which Biden proposes, appears to be more popular than Medicare-for-All.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Thanks. They’re just asking the general question, do you favor or oppose single payer health care.

Its a good way to measure if someone favors or opposes single-payer health care.

So this D.C. Circuit ruling requiring the judge to throw out Flynn's guilty plea.

Based on how writs of mandamus work - or are supposed to work - this was a breathtakingly illegitimate decision. There is no way that any other defendant would have been able to get a writ of mandamus in a situation like this.

Not nearly as serious, but it ranks up there with the Supreme Court issuing a stay to stop Florida from counting its own votes, on the ground that George Bush would be "irreparably harmed" if those votes were counted while Bush's appeal was pending.

Somebody reprinted this on Facebook. Seems fairly comprehensive.
some guy named Chris Russo (not the broadcaster) on facebook wrote: My biggest issue with Trump is probably the fact that he has had no prior political experience, went bankrupt 6 times and has many failed businesses, paid off a porn star to keep quiet, has over 24 harassment allegations, has had 2 articles of impeachment drafted against him, illegally contacted Ukraine to help him win re-election, has the most hours of golfing over any president, has done nothing to help our dying climate, botched the coronavirus response because he called it a hoax by the democrats instead of acting quicker, has never had an approval rating of over 45 percent, the whole Central Park 5 incident, thinks climate change is a Chinese hoax, told POC to go back to where they came from, throws meltdowns on Twitter, constantly retweets himself agreeing with himself, has had tweets flagged for misinformation, signed an executive bill regarding Twitter after his feelings got hurt, has increased our debt, hasn’t pulled out of any wars, adbandoned the Kurds, is really fat with a spray tan, has US pride at an all time low, has 10 cases of obstruction of justice per the mueller report, used George Floyd as an excuse to brag about job numbers, wanted to use violence against peaceful protestors, has done nothing to solve the wealth gap or poverty rate, has increased our debt, is fat and has an ugly spray tan, said he would date his own daughter, talked about fake treatments during a corona press conference, used to be an anti vaxxer, violated an official weather map with a fucking sharpie, all the shit in john Bolton’s book, said that cases would disappear if testing stopped, has a Vice President that can’t say “black lives matter” only “all lives matter”, falsely claimed there’s an AIDS vaccine, loves himself but has little empathy for others, is a complete asshole to reporters, made fun of someone disabled, the “grab by the pussy” thing, wanted to nuke a hurricane, thinks windmills cause cancer, has told over 19,000 false claims, talked more about him on a ramp than George Floyd, wants burning the flag to be a crime, called the coronavirus the kung flu, and has done nothing to help the average American.

Also the fact that he’s a lying, unqualified, draft dodging, gold star family disrespecting, POW attacking, US General insulting, racist, sexist, vulgar, confirmed sexual assaulting, trillion dollars to the rich tax cutting, own daughter creeping, wife cheating with a pornstar after birth of son and paying her off to influence a presidential election, $413 million dollar inheritance getting, teen pageant dressing room invading, baby and mother separating, breast feeding mother shaming, fat-shaming while being fat, 17 women accusing him of sexual assaulting, accusers are not attractive enough for him to assault implying, university student defrauding, bankrupt casino causing, kids cancer charity stealing, taped detailed accusation of rape of a minor having, wife-beating, popular vote losing, anti-vaxxing, Christianity-faking, publicist impersonating, tax dodging, friends’ wives pursuing, impeached, foreign aid bribing, 1/3 of the presidency golf playing, free press assaulting, Hannity coordinating, Cambridge Analytica using, Ivanka is a “piece of ass” approving, loan application asset inflating, historically low polling, college achievement faking, unqualified judge appointing, unqualified cabinet member appointing, foreign influence on our election welcoming, tax release avoiding, birther conspiracy spreading, Ukraine ambassador targeting, Russian money taking, Kurdish ally abandoning, soldier brain injury downplaying, full morning “executive time” taking, Epstein befriending, Putin bowing, Kim Jong Un praising, North Korean general saluting, US intelligence denying, tallest building in lower Manhattan after 9/11 boasting, congress obstructing, nuclear non-proliferation deal ending, Justice obstructing, unqualified daughter and son-in-law appointing, healthcare cut targeting, pedophile candidate supporting, trump tower Moscow denying, mail-bomber inspiring, 4 out of top 5 largest protests in US history causing, green energy stifling, clean water regulation destroying, healthy school lunch ending, climate change denying, congressional and judicial branch attacking, economy does better under democrats saying, Goldman Sachs appointing, food stamp removing, emissions standards lowering, press conference avoiding, emoluments clause breaking, longest govt shutdown record holding, Saudi Arabia nuclear tech selling, golf cheating, time magazine cover faking, El Paso mass shooter inspiring, paying legal bills for roughing up protestors promising, killed soldier “knew what he signed up for” saying, pardon abusing, scumbag.

You probably don't Reddit, but that's a copypasta from Reddit that's been gilded a lot. First saw it months ago.

Good to see it making the rounds on Facebook, but the people who should read it are too busy kidding his ass and have their minds made up about him.

This may be the worst summary/excerpt of a news story I have come across in some time. From the NYT morning briefing e-mail:
A federal appeals court panel ordered an end to the case against Michael Flynn, President Trump’s former national security adviser, delivering a major victory to the Justice Department.
Oh, yeah? Major victory to the Justice Department! Over...(checks notes)...the Justice Department?

Wow, they are taking an extra step in not just bashing Trump, but promoting Biden. I see that as an enormously big deal. Fuck, Trump is so bad this group of GOP operatives are spinning Clinton and Obama as being great alongside Bush and Reagan to make Trump look bad and Biden look Presidential. Truly astounding.

It's a blessing in the short term, but strategy in the long term.

What'll be interesting on their end is 2024. Who do they endorse then?

If Biden wins and goes 1 term and throws his weight behind VP/younger Democrat does that person get endorsed this full throatedly or will it be who the Republicans nominate?

The entire Republican party is going full amnesia once Trump is no longer its head and we know this. And the Democrats are fundamentally changing internally with more progressive political positions despite the best efforts of the establishment assholes.

So, it's going to be interesting.

On twitter, they were really pulling for Biden over the more progressive candidates, and I'm thinking they have given up on the GOP and will work to make Dems more conservative, which would be quite the battle. Rick Wilson is highly entertaining, but every once in awhile I need to remind myself that he went all in supporting Palin, which paved the road for Trump.

I'm almost willing to forgive the Palin thing as just playing the traditional Washington game. You back your side, even if you have to hold your nose to do it. You're not wrong about Palin being a bellwether, but I think some of the operatives were more just trying to push McCain over the finish line and didn't have a vision about what her popularity meant.

In hindsight... hooboy.

Ideally, you get Charlie Baker, Mitt Romney and a few others to split from the Trumpistan Republicans to make a 3rd party, but politically how is that going to work better than how the Green Party affects Dems in elections (badly)?

If the Republican Party continues on its present white nationalist trajectory - and I'd be surprised otherwise - I could see these guys setting up a more reasonable third party as a long-term replacement.

More realistically, there would probably be a decade-long schism in the conservative movement between what I'll call the "realists" and the "flat-earthers". You can probably guess which group is which in the current environment. Much like the Whigs were ultimately succeeded by the Republican party, there were several factions and political offshoots during the 1850s before that happened.

Like Steve alluded to, the Republican Party as it is currently constituted is probably going to be unlikely to continue without massive voter suppression or otherwise suppression of civil liberties in the short to medium term (which obviously is very, very possible).

It already should be considered to be a minority party acting as a majority party, but if the suburban whites fleeing the party left and right don't return, then Donald Trump might very well be the last Republican president. Imagine a scenario where Biden wins in 2020 and the Dems win the Senate back, meaningful election reforms are enabled at the federal level (re-enacting the Voter Rights Act at a national level) and voter suppression efforts are beaten back to the point where the Dem candidate in 2024 wins Texas on their way to a presidential victory.

At that point, the Republican Party has no influence or power as a national political party since it has almost no chance of winning a national election.

Well, it's all incremental, right? In terms of progressive advancement from where it was, I'd give that credit to FDR, with the silver medal to LBJ.

I was kind of just kidding around with the hypo. Who the fuck knows what's going to happen in 3 months, let alone trying to nail down the future of the GOP in 4 years.

I think anyone saying the GOP will be permanently tanked by Trump is being way too optimistic. They’ll just rebrand like they did after the disaster that was Bush’s presidency led to the landslide losses in 2006 and 2008. In a two-party state like the US way too many people view political party as part of their personal identity for either the GOP or Dems to sink into permanent oblivion. Plus Biden has repeatedly said that he likes working with Republicans, including McConnell, and looks forward to doing so as President. Biden literally eulogized Strom Thurmond; he’ll be fine with helping the GOP rehabilitate.

I completely forgot about Hannity being "Client #3" in the Michael Cohen indictment. Hell, I forgot about the Michael Cohen indictment. So many criminals surrounding this President and so many scandals... Yet Hannity cried about CNN being Clinton Network News and in the bag for Hillary, meanwhile he has been actively and openly working with Trump since 2015.

Yes, bipartisanship is so important to Biden that he personally stopped the ACA rather than push it through without Republican support.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
