Re: Random Politics
McGrath was definitely the choice of Schumer to run against Mitch. Apparently only 2 percent of Lexington's votes are counted in that number above, so I am interested to see if Booker's late surge is tempered by people who may not have known who he was a month ago.
My gall is sufficiently mitigated. Thank you for your concern.

Re: Random Politics
How does a closely contested race impact the race against Mitch? Will McGrath supporters come out for Booker, or is there animosity there? Is this good news that there is suddenly interest in Booker, or is it more that people weren't excited about McGrath? I just REALLY want to see Mitch gone.A_B wrote: ↑Wed Jun 24, 2020 2:40 pm McGrath was definitely the choice of Schumer to run against Mitch. Re: Random Politics
I don't think either of them is likely to beat Mitch, to be perfectly honest. As of right now the republican turnout was much greater than Democrat in the state, but that could change when Louisville and Lexington get in and if (the horror!) it turns out that the absentee voters were largely democratic and thus will lead to the fraud cries. The Sybian wrote: ↑Wed Jun 24, 2020 2:53 pmHow does a closely contested race impact the race against Mitch? I think a lot depends on how unpopular Trump is on election day. We saw last year that people were willing to vote for a democratic governor but that was basically a Bevin revolt and it didn't affect any downballot races that all went red. There would need to be overwhelming turnout in the cities to oust Mitch, and I think that takes another blunder or two by Trump before November. but I do think that anyone who voted for either McGrath or Booker will go blue.

Booker now up 3k votes with 79% of precincts reporting. And the total vote numbers don't look like they include Louisville and Lexington yet.

Re: Random Politics
We got a new newspaper in the mail yesterday. I had to check the address twice after reading the headlines and it turns out The Epoch Times is mass-delivered to "residential customer". Here are the stories advertised above the fold (it looks more like a website than a traditional newspaper):
How China's Communist Regime Endangered the World
How China's Coverup Led to a Global Pandemic
The CCP's Propaganda War
CCP's Subversion of WHO Undermined Global Pandemic Response
Where Ties With Communist China Are close, the CCP Virus Follows
Scammers Use Pandemic to Prey on Vulnerable Seniors
Telling Chinese People the Truth About the CCP
I also enjoy how it lists a "Food Editor" and that they recommend the 6-month subscription for $79 instead of the 12-month one for $159. I can only assume the latter is because when you realize you've been duped, you're less likely to try to fight for a refund at that price point. You can also pay by check!
Shockingly, there are zero ads in the paper and just one testimonial to its excellence, which comes from Jeff Ballabon, who is credited as a former VP at CBS News. Oddly, there is no mention of his affiliation with the Trump campaign, the Federalist Society, and the American Conservative Union Foundation.

The Epoch Times is all over Toronto - even sponsoring public events. Had it put in the mailbox a number of times, and it is available in newspaper boxes near many subway stations.
Put out by Falun Gong - a group that the Chinese government brutally suppresses. Ostensibly a meditation society, it has cultic religious tendencies and some bizarre beliefs.
Totally anti-Chinese communist party.

That paper is awesome. They call it the CCP virus.

Re: Random Politics
I got the Epoch Times a few months ago, tried to read it, couldn't get past the sheer insanity of their arguments. The Falun Gong used to set up demonstrations outside my office building, or more accurately in front of MSG. They'd have people in cages with lots of fake blood and simulated torture hanging out flyers to learn about their religion (which seemed like doing tai chi and meditation) and passing out the Epoch Times.

Lexington counting votes at 9, Louisville at 10. McGrath has about a 3,200 vote lead with 81% reporting.

Re: Random Politics
Yeah, he got 80% in Louisville walk in votes and 72% in Lexington. Louisville has nearly 100k absentees to count I think. if that ratio holds in both places then it's probably game over.tennbengal wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 8:27 amFeels like Booker can overcome that with those two places left to go, right?

Re: Random Politics
Lexington may have just come in. Less than 1k votes with McGrath ahead. About 60k votes just hit the system.
ETA: Couple of other counties came in and pushed lead to 1,700

Re: Random Politics
Washington Posts numbers have McGrath up 23k votes but it doesn't line up with anything else i've seen anywhere else, plus they are saying only 50% of vote is in. Very odd.

Re: Random Politics
Booker won by 36k in louisville. Might not be enough,
ETA: Booker Up 21k votes now with Louisville accounted for. But the rest of the state is going McGrath.

Good lord - I think they tally votes faster in India.
Also - there's this (and maybe my memory is fading, but I don't recall things unfolding in the way lil' Marco claims.

Re: Random Politics
So, this morning I was directed to an article in today's paper discussing local businesses that got PPP money. Exactly one law firm was mentioned, the article saying that "former mayor Rocky Anderson's firm, ----- , received upwards of $1,000,000."
Well, Rocky hasn't been there in over 20 years, and we only got half a million, not upwards of a million.
Apparently someone notified the paper, because we've now been "corrected" out.
Bizarre.

Can the democrats return the favour for what the GOP did do Garland? Or is that only the Senate that can obstruct?

Pretty sure McConnell would force the Senate to vote on a replacement 10 minutes after Trump selected a name from the Heritage Foundation list
