The 'highlights' from Trumps interview with Chris Wallace are horrifying.

And one hell of a dog whistle in the 'what should name them? Fort Reverand Al Sharpton? when asked about changing the names of military bases named after Confederate Generals.

I shouldn't be surprised, but I'm shocked he actually said during the Chris Wallace interview that he is bringing it back because it got such great ratings. He can't even pretend that he cares about people dying, or leading, he only cares about his damned TV ratings. I mean, we all know that, but he isn't smart enough to say he is bringing it back to educate or save lives or bring peace of mind or stability, he wants fucking ratings. Worse, he will violate campaign laws and hold campaign rallies during the time and basically get free campaign time, much like his Rose Garden presser last week.

Pretty sure this is another impeachable offense...

Trump’s Request of an Ambassador: Get the British Open for Me
The American ambassador to Britain, Robert Wood Johnson IV, told multiple colleagues in February 2018 that President Trump had asked him to see if the British government could help steer the world-famous and lucrative British Open golf tournament to the Trump Turnberry resort in Scotland, according to three people with knowledge of the episode.

The ambassador’s deputy, Lewis A. Lukens, advised him not to do it, warning that it would be an unethical use of the presidency for private gain, these people said. But Mr. Johnson apparently felt pressured to try. A few weeks later, he raised the idea of Turnberry playing host to the Open with the secretary of state for Scotland, David Mundell.

And that had one of the catholic soccer moms, who has been generally kind of on the fence about things (she supported Kavanagh, but as a reminder, a lot of private school folks in DC did, because he's fully part of that crowd)....

Sorry, anyways, she posted a scathing take on Trump yesterday based on that throwaway comment.

I wouldn't be surprised as a next step in his campaign to promote himself as the "Law and Order" President. I'm getting the feeling this is all a ruse to get footage for campaign videos to show the lawless dystopian society the "Radical Left Wing Democrats like Joe Biden" want. It seems like every interview with a GOP Congressman these days, no matter the topic, requires dropping the phrase "Radical Left Wing Democrats." If Trump appeared in a military despot uniform, Hannity would would bust a nut.

Trump has never tried to broaden his base, as a sane politician would, he is always trying to deepen the love and devotion of his base. As always, I'm surprised he doesn't shed more supporters the crazier he gets, but I think anyone who still supports him is so locked in, they make excuses to themselves to avoid confronting what they've already signed on to support.

Speaking of insane strategies by Trump, I love when something negative happens, and instead of acting like a normal person and letting it go, he keeps it in the news and just keeps making it worse. I didn't actually watch the segment, but saw a link to a clip where Trump did an interview with a medical doctor at the White House for FoxNews to discuss how amazing it is that he aced the cognitive exam. Apparently this exam is mandatory for all Medicare patience as part of their physical. My parents both took it. There is no "difficult questions at the end." I also read a journalist saying their mother has Alzheimers and lives in a home. They give her the test everyday, and no matter how horrible the answers, they always tell the patient they did great. I know he is trying to run on Biden being mentally unfit, but FFS, let this go already! Same with the drinking water and stumbling on a ramp. We all laughed, and it was done, but his Narcissistic brain can't let it go, so he riffs on the ramp and water for 10 minutes in Tulsa.

I have multiple bets (that I badly want to lose) that are hinging on this logic. He's not actively campaigning because he knows that's not his path to victory.

I disagree. I think he desperately wants to be out campaigning, he started campaign rallies a few weeks into office and never stopped. After the embarrassment of Tulsa and having to cancel the NH rally because of laughably low attendance expectations, he is fuming that he can't hold his cult worship parties. I think he defective narcissistic brain can't let go of shit, and none of his advisors can or will control his impulses, so he rails on about stupid petty personal shit instead of doing the work of Presidenting, or discussing sane campaign issues.

As with all things Trump there's no logic or plan behind it. I don't doubt he would love to employ plans to screw with voting and will do what he can where he can, but the truth is that's not much. He can try to intimidate states to restrict mail-in voting or absentee ballots but the states run their own elections. He can encourage Russia to hack the voting machines, but huge swings in votes would be noticeable so it would take a close election to really work to any kind of degree (and presumes that most states haven't taken steps to try and secure the machines).

Etc, etc. I share the trepidation and concern but the integrity of the election is probably about 98 percent secure. Let's hope that's enough.

I don't think we've had a 98% secure election in the internet era. I still think we'll eventually find out 2016 wasn't legitimate.

I know the election is still a ways off, and god knows what shenanigans Trump's minions might be up to, but I just can't shake the feeling that this is going to be a One Issue election. And that issue is Covid-19, and Trump has completely screwed the pooch on it, and there's no sign of him getting it right anytime soon.

Kinda reminds me of the 1980 election (yes, I do remember it well enough). For everything else going on, it boiled down to one issue...the Iranian Hostages. They were abducted on Carter's watch, and the rescue mission failed, badly. After that, it really didn't matter what else was going on.

I'm fairly convinced that his campaign is mostly about one more cash grab (donations are actively being funneled to his properties) with some laissez-faire authoritarianism, bullying, racism, etc. thrown in just because that's who he is and if that gets him re-elected then that's just gravy.

I would be more convinced of this if other at-risk Republicans were turning on him to save themselves.

Not that it's definitely gonna happen but there's still time for that. Labor Day (give or take) and after the "conventions" is historically when the rubber hits the road and you'll see rats jumping off the ship if they think it will help them.

ETA: Also somehow a lot of Republicans have convinced themselves that Trump has magical powers or something based on his "comeback" against Hillary although the polling was mostly correct throughout 2016 and Trump won by effectively winning a three-team parlay where he was probably 3-to-1 to 5-to-1 dog in Michigan, Wisconsin and PA. Given that the real ship jumping might not happen until around the debates/early October if Biden is still polling up about 10 points or so.
