I wasn't even that excited about Knights myself but like BSF said once they've gotten onto the ice and we see what the fans can do with it, it'll probably start to grow on me. I feel like teal is just a little too clever for Seattle though. Maybe I'm being too rough, but it seems like they decided to take elements from the Seahawks, Mariners and Sounders and just kind of mashed it all together in a blender.

Good article about how the process for picking the name, colors, etc: How Seattle's NHL team became the Kraken

The lengths they went through to not let it leak are pretty intense.

And there's already these local things...Fremont Brewing Sky Kraken Hazy Pale.

I really just liked the ability to turn your team's mascot into a whine. I'm sure no one's ever thought of that before.

Not to change the subject back to...the playoffs, but I wasn't aware of this and it's of minor interest, but Marc-Andre Fleury will have the longest consecutive playoff streak in the four major sports if the NHL playoffs get going (14 years). Though that's not including players who would have played but didn't because of injuries like Sidney Crosby.

I've been so convinced this actually wasn't going to happen that I'm starting to actually get a little excited that there's going to be real hockey in a week (and exhibitions this week).

Watching Leafs-Habs. Really like with the building setup, turning the arena essentially into a giant studio. Along with the lighting and camera angles, visually it's gotten me into the hockey.
Before sports came back I was definitely a fake-crowd-noise skeptic, but quickly converted. I think Aussie Rules was the first broadcast I watched post covid and the first week with no crowd noise was way too jarring compared to the piped in stuff they added the week after. As long as it's mixed right (a nice background murmur, with a build-up for goals and big moments), it works for me. Watching cricket the last few weekends have been my favourite - it's essentially an audio track of thousands of people having their own side conversations, which I'm thinking is a pretty accurate depiction.

100% guarantee though - when the NHL starts showing these fan videos on the jumbo screens it will be the definition of cringy.

Agree they did great with the arena setup. Thinking the NHL might get a lot of potential new fans tuning in. Hopefully the setup can keep them watching

Also nice to see the rink ends without the netting.

I wonder what the cost is of covering the seats with the quality branded tarp. I was kind of expecting MLB teams to do more with their stadiums, although they are admittedly much larger.

NBC's work with the Premier Lacrosse League has been phenomenal. No fans and no fake crowd noise, but real focus on creating a great broadcast. Goal sounds, ref mics, players mic'd up (with an ear piece in the helmet so they can interview at breaks in play), fixed cameras all over the place, handheld cameras, in goal/field shots, etc. Lacrosse is usually a 1 or 2 camera setup. So this jump is huge, but if NBC brings this level to the NHL it will be far superior to their typical regional sports coverage and NBC/NBCSN production. Especially when you consider the skill level of NHL announcers versus the lacrosse crews.

Pretty good Duhatschek piece in the Athletic about all of the unknowns going into the playoffs.

Put me down for predicting this will be one of the most memorable NHL playoffs in history and not just because of the circumstances. With 24 almost completely healthy teams and ultimate winner spending more than two months away from home, there's no asterisk for anyone who wins it all. If anything, it'll be the most difficult Cup to win in the history of the league.

I see what McIndoe did here to shoehorn the Kraken into this article, but I'm very proud to say the team that Sharks fans will be rooting against hardest is the Golden Knights and it's not even close, especially with the Kings also out.

The jerkoff at Fox Sports Arizona who is directing this ARZ-VGK game is way too in love with some fucked up camera angles. Obviously some AV dork who is creaming at all of the extra cameras on the ice but not giving a shit about presentation.

OK, I'm a sucker for the arena playing the goal song and fan chant after a goal. I don't need artificial crowd noise, but I do want that.
