They probably need to work on hiring some black people to avoid the Simmons trap.

Re: Defector.com
Considering they have a trans writer, I would think they'd be a little more open to POC writers than Simmons would be.
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Number 45 is Paul Konerko with 439.

Oh I think so, too, but the picture of them all in the zoom call isn't exactly a melting pot.

I really have to assume they are on that. They've had some incredibly talented black voices in the past that moved on from them. I wish they could get a few of them back. Time to find new voices.

This genuinely perked up my day.

I know (eyeballing) 10 out of 18 white dudes isn't cause for celebration, but I imagine that's still pretty diverse for the sportswriting industry.

It's true. It is not like a 80s sports page by any means.

Re: Defector.com
May I ask which level you're selecting? As someone who will very likely not take advantage of most of the additional items that come at the $99 level (commenting, live Q&A's, etc.), do you feel the newsletter may include things to help "make it worth" the additional $30/year? It need not be a particularly high bar, but just want to know what you think.

If I sign up, and I probably will, I will do the base level. I think I commented like 5 times total at deadspin.

Right. I'm just trying to find out if anyone thinks the $30 for the newsletter will be worth it.

Re: Defector.com
I did it just because. Another $2.50/mo for some extra amount of something I've truly missed on devices I'm in front of all day long for the forseeable future.

Re: Defector.com
I'm most excited for the Roth and Magary podcast to comeback, Deadcast was easily the one I got happiest about when a new episode showed up. Although I guess I just assumed it would be free. Have they said if its available for subscribers only?

I love both of their writing but man I did not dig the podcast. I really am just not a podcast guy I think.

In the last two years before they were torn apart from corporate raiders, their political stuff was as clear and concise about where things were at the moment and where it was heading as anything out there. They were literally one of few progressive sets of voices before they were silenced. It's why the "stick to sports" crap from their last media takeover overlords was what drove them to quit. They understood that you cannot separate sports from society at large. It is REALLY good their voices are coming back collectively.
Re: Defector.com
I remember I got into Deadspin because Will Leitch went on that failed Stephen A. TV show Quite Frankly and was told that Deadspin wasn't a good enough name for a website.
Then there was this magic a couple years after that:

To be fair, this was more of a cultural blind spot than an "I don't get, or like, this" type of thing.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 9:16 pm Never really got into Deadspin. Feel like a real outsider right now.

Yeah, people in here talked about Deadspin a lot, and I read a bunch of linked articles, but never get into it.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2020 2:06 pmTo be fair, this was more of a cultural blind spot than an "I don't get, or like, this" type of thing.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 9:16 pm Never really got into Deadspin. Late deadspin may have had the clearest group moral compass on the internet. I have no doubt they would have set one of their own on fire if caught doing the things they were constantly calling out others for.

Don't get me wrong, I'd go there every now and then, but it was sort of like top 40 radio for me in that I never really researched the authors like I do indie bands.

I really enjoy how you can't use the shortest of shortcuts to open an article in a new tab, as well as the asking me for a screen name to comment on every one.
