Re: 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
From the Flames perspective, they needed to come out hard. They have been a soft and embarrassing team their last playoff 3 appearances. Especially last year, top seed in the West and got obliterated.
They put Tkachuk in the starting lineup and he wanted to fight Wheeler at the opening faceoff. Then he hit every Jets player (including Schiefle) on the opening shift like a madman. So on the 2nd shift, Tkachuk is continuing his madman act and Schiefle tried to dodge the hit which resulted in an extremely unfortunate play.
If we really want to break down the mechanics of the injury, the problem was the speed Schiefle was carrying when he tried to spin away from the hit. If you notice his front skate (right skate) somewhat lost an edge as he tried the hard cut, and with momentum he had in meant it put him that much closer to the boards and that right skate hit the boards sideways, however, that initial skip on the right skate meant the trailing left skate couldn’t come around and clear the boards as planned, and therefore instead of the side of the left skate rubbing against the boards like the right one did, the left skate has got the toe stuck flush squarely to boards....and then both the knee and ankle (which is offset at an angle when he’s hurt on the ice) take the full twisting torque.

Re: 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
So, this is the first game I’m watching in Toronto. Are the ads along the boards specific to the “home” team? They have ads for Xfinity and Navy Federal Credit Union, and those don’t seem to be companies in The Six. Or maybe they’re CGI?

Re: 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
All I know is, according to the color guy, Keith Jones was once blown by Patrick Elias in NJ. Otherwise, besides that highlight, this game has, well, blown.

I thought I misheard that. Glad I’m not the only one who heard that.

Right after, the color guy spat out that Jones was “blown past” but it was too late.

That "crowd" shot of the Philly fans to after the Bruins goal was amazing.

Flyers picked it up after a slow start but I’m guessing that it wouldn’t be 4-1 with Rask in net.

Re: 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
Board ads were definitely PPG ads for the Pens/Habs game last night. I thought it was a nice touch but as someone mentioned yesterday there was probably a $ negotiation over that.

Re: 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
That was quite a finish in Colorado-STL game. Cost STL at least one point in round robin standings.

Leafs and Canucks shut out and the Oilers give up 6 in a loss. August hockey is perfect.

Deserved or not, a fairly large target on Tkachuk’s back, now.degenerasian wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 12:55 am Leafs and Canucks shut out and the Oilers give up 6 in a loss. August hockey is perfect.

Re: 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
Have they shown the down the blue line angle Maurice was talking about? Not that I'd be able to judge one way or the other, but I imagine other hockey people could.
Re: 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
Self-qualified "hockey people" here. There is in no way that was intentional. Tachuck was finishing a check and his skate either caught a rut or something and came up and caught Schifele in the leg. Freak play. How you know that is because if Schifele's leg isn't there to catch the skate, he's going foot first into the boards and that's a broken ankle waiting to happen.
Tachuck isn't a clean player, but the best skaters in the the world couldn't pull off an attempt to injure in that situation and get away without hurting themselves. There's easier ways to take a run at a guy.
Maurice is just working the refs for subsequent games.

Nice 5-on-3 goal there.

Just waiting for the first time one of these morning games goes to 3 OTs and ends up screwing up the schedule for the rest of the day.

Yeah, you know it’s inevitable. And it will ruin the ice quality for the day, too.

Re: 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
Is this going to be Lundqvist's last career playoff game?
ETA: With a back to back tomorrow, probably smart to start Georgiev win or lose today if Shesterkin (sp?) can't go tomorrow.

Not a problem. Tkachuk can handle it.sancarlos wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 11:05 amDeserved or not, a fairly large target on Tkachuk’s back, now.degenerasian wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 12:55 am Leafs and Canucks shut out and the Oilers give up 6 in a loss. August hockey is perfect.

I just hope this Winnipeg/Calgary series goes the full five games because I have a weird feeling VGK is going to be playing whichever team wins it.

With Scheifle and Laine out, that’s probably unlikely.

That's right. The last Flames Game 2 win was the Conference Final in 2004 to take a 2 games to 0 lead against San Jose.travzilla wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 4:20 pmIf I heard right, Flames are now 0-10 in their last ten game-twos.

Robin Lehner and Ryan Reaves kneeled for national anthem before VGK game. So did Jamie Donaldson for Dallas I believe.

Re: 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
The NHL categorizing the Bolts shootout win over the Caps today as a 3-2 2OT win is a bit misleading.

Re: 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
So the reason the Caps don't have Samsonov backing up Holtby....ATV accident in mother Russia. Apparently messed up his neck and back pretty seriously. Caps are not allowed to disclosure it but guessing they are very unhappy. Especially since everyone expected him to be the #1 next year due to Holtby's well deserved salary won't work for the Caps cap.
Re: 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
I hope one of the lessons the NHL is taking from this is that they should absolutely be scheduling quintuple headers on Saturdays and Sundays for the first round of the playoffs in future years.

Re: 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs
Except that hockey players and hockey fans really hate afternoon games. I've never figured out why, just habit I think.
Sportsnet often tries to sneak in a Saturday triple header and the afternoon game gets horrible ratings. And for playoffs, teams don't play back to back. This is probably the first time in 20 years.
