The Jarome Iginla Switcheroo

Post by Johnny Hotcakes »

Have you straights been following this at all?

Earlier tonight, TSN reported that Iginla had been traded to Boston for the pupu platter. The thought was that it was a done deal and that the official announcement would come tomorrow. All of the Bruins blogs were sucking each others dicks and congratulating themselves over their good fortune. Meanwhile, most Flames fans were looking into murder-suicide options with Jay Feaster.

Now, out of nowhere, TSN is reporting that he has actually been traded to Pittsburgh for what the talking heads say is a much better package (main thing being that the 1st is no longer conditional).

Where will this end up? Personally, I'm hoping for a Marcel Aubut level clusterfuck akin to when Pierre Page traded Lindros to Philly AND the Rangers.

Normalasian, what are your thoughts on this whole thang?

Penguins have now confirmed it, so I guess it is official.

Aaron Ward can now reevaluate the quality of his sources.

Of course I followed this and was feeling pretty good. Then my scorecenter app went off before all the major online outlets got it right. It sucks.

This link is still alive on the ESPN Front Page.

(Ahhhh, switched to Pittsburgh as I posted.)

Sorry to hear it, Johnnie. As a fan, that would be brutal.

I mean, I can really only follow the Bruins so much being this disconnected. AFN shows hockey (mostly Penguins games, go figure) and I love watching it. I'm actually more mad that I'm not more mad at this. (If that makes sense.) If I were in the states and making time to follow the Bruins more, I'm sure I'd be beside myself with disgust.

I had them giving up Despres and two high draft picks. And the Penguins got Iggy for far less than that. Far less? So, happy, I guess. Still don't think the Penguins need him.

Honestly? I would have liked to see Iggy finish his career in Calgary.

But what the fuck do I know? I follow Junior shinny. Speaking of which, did you notice that the Memorial Cup host team got thrashed in the first round of the WHL playoffs? The Medicine Hat Tigers swept Saskatoon. Four straight. 15-4 total scoring. So the Saskatoon Blades has a couple of months to figure it out. That doesn't discount them. Shawinigan Cataractes won the Memorial Cup last year; lost in the second round of QMJHL playoffs. So there's faint hope. Quite faint. But . . . hope!

I'm poor and schedule screwed life-wise. I've got the Mens World Curling Championships to attend all week (I'm a volunteer). It's here in YYJ. I vol'd a year ago. Just because no way was I going to miss out on it.

Face it. The Swamp is all about Curling.

Wow. I really thought it would be Boston. I checked the Heat/Bulls score this morning and did a literal spit take when I saw the headline on the sidebar.

So glad they didn't give up Depres. He has looked very good.

Am a Pens fan, and not sure what you meant by together, but breaking up the current first line would be madness. Madness!!!

Iginla with Malkin and Neal, Morrow on the third with Sutter and Cooke.

I still like Adams, and more importantly Bylsma loves him, so it's him, Jeffrey/Vitale at center and then...I don't know on the fourth line. Glass can just go, so maybe Kennedy stays just because Bennett doesn't gain much playing 8 minutes a night and can still safely be sent down to W-B/S. The kid has looked pretty good though.

I don't like my team being a prohibitive favorite, but that's what they're to be in the East (at the very least).

This needs to be in Howard's journalism thread.

TSN broke that is was Boston. My cousin at the Dome said they announced in the arena it was Boston.

From everything I am reading this morning, it sounds like Calgary and Boston both really thought it was Boston too, but Iginla said no.

So in the end it wasn't a list of 4 teams, it was a list of 1.
LA were never in it, trade to a division rival? (next year). Media got this wrong from all angles.

I was afraid the Pens would give up too much for Iginla, but a late first and some nobodies is fine by me. After trading Morrow away, they'd better hang onto some young defensemen.

Rass, you like that first line? I hate it and hope Iginla slides in for Dupuis.

Me, a little while ago, 80% asleep, turning over: OW! CRAMP! FUCK! OWWWWW!

[writhes in agony for a while, debates brewing pot of Mocha Java or Costa Rican coffee]

[turns on radio, hears Iginla talk]

[cramp magically heals]

So, Iginla, huh? That's something. I usually fetishize prospects, but the guys the Pens gave up aren't really even on my radar. I like the guys the Bruins were offering a lot more. (I heart Khokhlachev.) So this must have been about Iginla picking Pittsburgh and Feaster trying to get what he wanted without much leverage.
rass wrote:but breaking up the current first line would be madness. Madness!!!
Agreed. I used to compare Pascal Dupuis to Steelers defensive back Ike Taylor. Taylor is a very good player who does everything except catch interceptions. Dupuis used to be a very good player who did everything except score goals. Now he's scoring goals, and we can't joke about him anymore.

But with the way that Bylsma likes to mix-and-match lines, they'll all get a chance to play together at some point. (Crosby at center, Iginla at right wing, Fleury at left wing on nights that Vokoun starts in goal.)

Calgary is never on tv, so I haven't seen Iginla play much. I just know the mystique around the guy. I don't know how excited I should be about this trade. How much is he going to contribute? If anything, I'm glad that he's not going to Boston or Montreal or anywhere else.
rassinla wrote:I don't like my team being a prohibitive favorite, but that's what they're to be in the East (at the very least).
Agree with this, too. It's a weird feeling. Like, if they don't win the Cup, the season will be a disappointment. That's a tough position to be in. Especially tough in the era of Internet trolls, so a second-round playoff loss would force me to go into online exile for a while. But better to be the favorite than to be the Pirates.

So, is this the official 'Cup or Bust?' thread? Are we going to revisit it as Iginla and Morrow and Murray teach a young Penguins team how to look deep within themselves and learn how to win? (Yeah, I know the Pens have won before, but I'm trying to equate this to an '80s sit-com.) Bylsma has one month to figure out line combinations before the second season begins. Oh, and the Pens have a 13-game winning streak, which is currently 13 games longer than the Miami Heat's streak. Life is good.

Hate??? You certainly can't argue with the current results. However I do seem to be on the wrong side of the general (if inconsequential) consensus. Most people think Iginla will go on Sid's wing (he and Neal play on the same side so that combo with Malkin won't work) and #9 will move back down to the third line. Morrow will play with Neal and hopefully, someday, Malkin.

The Steelers couldn't argue with the results they got out of Ward, Ceddy Ced and Randle-El, but that doesn't mean that their WRs couldn't have been significantly improved.

Iginla's a Hall of Famer who's lost a step. I know the Penguins play with a lot of speed so he might not be able to keep up at first. He still has the shot and is an amazing winger who can still win puck battles along the boards and he can fight, although he probably won't need to in Pittsburgh. I think a playoff run would really motivate him to get that 36 year old body going again.

The Flames had him for 16 years and never ever once found a center for him. It shows the uselessness of the Flames organization in this generation. His stats are staggering considering he played for a shitty team with shitty players his whole career.

Because Iginla picked his deal.

When you trade an expiring contract to only one team you can't expect much.
Feaster would take the Boston deal over this one but Iginla has the final say.

No-trade clauses really handcuff teams.

Well, I'm pretty sure Iginla would be harder to trade if he weren't an expiring contract. That actually worked in Cal-Gary's favour.

My point was that Brenden Morrow was in the same situation (expiring contract, NTC), and is much less valuable than Iginla at this point in their careers.

I've always thought it was easier to trade a existing contract (preferably with 1 year left) so that it's not giving up good prospects for just a 2 month rental. Do i have it backwards?

Usually no, but with the cap dropping $6-7MM next year, a guy like Iginla would end up being a negative. Same reason Jussi Jokinen just cleared waivers.

What an absolute clusterfuck Flames management is.
Here's President and CEO Ken King on Primetime Sports

http://www.sportsnet.ca/590/prime-time-sports/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just amazing. So Iginla gives his 4 teams, Feaster goes and makes a deal with Boston and then he has to GO BACK AND ASK Iginla if the trade is ok? They didn't ask Iginla to sign a waiver declaring that he no longer has a NTC and he can be dealt to 4 teams? It was only verbal? How does a player get control? Iginla made his own trade regardless of the return?

Iginla might as well have been the one talking to Shero and Chirelli, what do we need a GM for? Pittsburgh could have offered much less and it probably would have been ok.
