Molina is talked about as a slam-dunk Hall of Famer and legend of the sport by most people here, while silly old me wonders what the HOF argument is for him over Jorge Posada.

I'm with you on this one, but I'm careful not to say it out loud around here at risk of annoying people. I picked Posada because he was a far superior offensive catcher who also trumped Molina in the all-important "Ringzzzz" category for people who overvalue playoff appearances. Molina is a very valuable defensive player with a lot of longevity but only average (at best) offensive production. Unless i'm forgetting someone, the only modern HOF'er who fits that profile is Ozzie Smith, who is the single most valuable defensive player ever per both BRef and Fangraphs. I think Cards media people actually know the weakness in the case, and exaggerate Molina's offensive skills (a low K-rate and little else) and productivity (basically just compiler stats) to compensate.

Anyway, to avoid too much of a thread-jack, the great Rob Friedman Twitter account (@PitchingNinja) has been posting some fantastic videos this weekend of Gibson talking about his pitching philosophy. Some of what he said was counterintuitive to me at first, but makes a lot of sense when he explained it. Gibson talked about his reputation for throwing inside and hitting batters and he was clear that the point of that wasn't to "control the inside corner." Gibson felt that you're never going to win against good hitters by throwing a lot of inside fastballs, because power hitters tend to crush that pitch. However, Gibson threw fastballs off the plate and inside to deter hitters from cheating on his outside corner pitches. He wanted to ensure that if he could hit his spots on the outside corner that he'd get guys out.
