Bob Gibson
Damn.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Re: Bob Gibson
Slightly before my time, but my father raved about him.
Check out his stats for 1968. 304 innings, 1.12 ERA 13 shutouts... and somehow he lost 9 games.

Well. I thought he was already dead.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.

Re: Bob Gibson
Seems fitting that Bob Gibson dies on a day where a team wins a deciding playoff game using 9 pitchers.

28 complete games in a season is insane

Re: Bob Gibson
Pretty tough for fans around here to have Brock and Gibson die within a one-month span. The "Best Fans in Baseball" shtick draws plenty of deserved jokes, but those two guys are both legitimate legends who are borderline mythical figures to Cards fans.

Re: Bob Gibson
255 complete games for his career. Damn. He had more career complete games than wins! That will certainly never happen again.

Well yadi isn’t a traitor.
I’m being facetious. Obviously cardinal pujols is the better player.

Re: Bob Gibson
I know you're joking -- and everyone here knows Pujols is better -- but the single-team "loyalty" factor seriously enhances fans' views of Molina and Wainwright. Molina is talked about as a slam-dunk Hall of Famer and legend of the sport by most people here, while silly old me wonders what the HOF argument is for him over Jorge Posada.A_B wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 10:29 pmWell yadi isn’t a traitor.

He was so dominating in 1968 (1.12 ERA) that they lowered the damn mound!

Or anyone, really. Yadi had two or three fantastic seasons, but otherwise wasn’t he just basically “pretty good” at best?Joe K wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 10:33 pmI know you're joking -- and everyone here knows Pujols is better -- but the single-team "loyalty" factor seriously enhances fans' views of Molina and Wainwright. Re: Bob Gibson
Many of you probably already saw it, but in case you missed it, I don't recall the story in this twitter thread ending up in an old "brushes" thread here.
“The running, the jumping... a celebration of life.”
Re: Bob Gibson
I'm with you on this one, but I'm careful not to say it out loud around here at risk of annoying people. I picked Posada because he was a far superior offensive catcher who also trumped Molina in the all-important "Ringzzzz" category for people who overvalue playoff appearances. Molina is a very valuable defensive player with a lot of longevity but only average (at best) offensive production. Unless i'm forgetting someone, the only modern HOF'er who fits that profile is Ozzie Smith, who is the single most valuable defensive player ever per both BRef and Fangraphs. I think Cards media people actually know the weakness in the case, and exaggerate Molina's offensive skills (a low K-rate and little else) and productivity (basically just compiler stats) to compensate.Steve of phpBB wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 9:39 amOr anyone, really. Anyway, to avoid too much of a thread-jack, the great Rob Friedman Twitter account (@PitchingNinja) has been posting some fantastic videos this weekend of Gibson talking about his pitching philosophy. Some of what he said was counterintuitive to me at first, but makes a lot of sense when he explained it. Gibson talked about his reputation for throwing inside and hitting batters and he was clear that the point of that wasn't to "control the inside corner." Gibson felt that you're never going to win against good hitters by throwing a lot of inside fastballs, because power hitters tend to crush that pitch. However, Gibson threw fastballs off the plate and inside to deter hitters from cheating on his outside corner pitches. He wanted to ensure that if he could hit his spots on the outside corner that he'd get guys out.
