Bandwagon fan of the 2023 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS!
Re: Getting the spins
Well, Tweedy's from Belleville, Illinois (just outside St. Louis); John Stirrat is from Mississippi... it's not like the band is that Yankee.

Tom Petty >>> Rod Stewart

They're both great, but I'd say Petty mostly always >>> Stewart

Re: Getting the spins
Stewart started out as well as any rock and roll musician could, realistically speaking. Those first few solo LPs are timeless, and Faces are as seminal as bands get.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 9:29 amThey're both great, but I'd say Petty mostly always >>> Stewart
But then disco and the 80s happened.
Petty wins because of Stewart’s trajectory, IMO.

Sturgill Simpson was on Colbert last night.
Re: Getting the spins
I don't think Tom Petty ever had his stomach pumped because he swallowed too much cum. Advantage Tom.

and so we're clear, this was in reference to Petty's version of Leave Virginia Alone from the Wildflowers boxset

I followed. That boxed set is really great.

Re: Getting the spins
I don’t understand why we have to denigrate one artist to praise another. Petty was truly great. And, as Enoch said, Rod’s early solo stuff and his Faces releases really stand up.

Re: Getting the spins
I wasn't criticizing Rod's music. I actually think he's overall underrated when it comes to his earlier stuff.
But he's been awful for about 35 years now.

I get an early 80s Rod Stewart vibe from The War on Drugs. Anyone else?
Legal Eagles is probably what made chedda want to be a lawyer, so I'll give him a pass.

Look, when you want to push a Sheen, Sutherland, O'Donnell vehicle, you've got to call in the big guns.

Definitely, and likely a reason I love TWoD so much. Funny too, that they also remind me of Petty a lot.

Re: Getting the spins
For the record, any Swamp anthem should be by The Toadies. It only makes sense.

Re: Getting the spins
I needed to get out of my KEXP routine today (The Mom Show was too much this morning) so I've been listening to the Murakami Vinyl collection on Spotify (Here) and its great...lots of jazz, classical, but everyone in a while you get a Creedence or Beach Boys song, and its kinda jarring.

This is the kind of music that they play in hell.
"beautiful, with an exotic-yet-familiar facial structure and an arresting gaze."
Re: Getting the spins
Looking at it now, Adams might seem like odd man out, but he was just a couple of years removed from one of the biggest singles ever, from a movie this one was clearly using as a template. Stewart and Sting were still huge stars, so I bet this trio was the #1 choice.

Re: Getting the spins
Bryan Adams reminds me or Richard Marx or Sheryl Crow in that I felt ripped off for liking “Cuts Like a Knife” and “Don’t Mean Nothing” and “All I Wanna Do” and then not even remotely coming close to appreciating anything any of them did afterwards. Throw No Doubt / Gwen Stefani onto the pile too for making like “Just a Girl.”rass wrote: ↑Fri Nov 13, 2020 9:05 am Looking at it now, Adams might seem like odd man out, but he was just a couple of years removed from one of the biggest singles ever, from a movie this one was clearly using as a template. I went to my parents cabin a couple weeks ago and flipped on the bluetooth speaker and (not realizing it actually had an FM tuner and that we could get reception there) was greeted with the intro to Cetera's Glory of Love. Right song, right place.
