DaveInSeattle wrote: Thu Oct 15, 2020 10:31 am I'm doing the 'Sober October'...not for any sobriety reasons, but for health reasons.

I've been dealing with a lingering cough/congestion for a few months now. I have coughing spells that come and go, but its really bad when I lay down to go to bed. And I'll wake up in the middle of the night coughing, and have to get up and 'hock a loogie' and get a drink of water.

I just assumed it was allergies, but I went and saw my doctor, who prescribed some nose spray, and sent me to an ENT.

The ENT was fairly dismissive, but said 'it might be reflux'...what he called nighttime GERD. And one of the things on the handout he gave me as he shuffled me out the door was to stop drinking. So no wine with dinner, and no beers as I'm making dinner on the weekend.

So a few months later...I'm still having the issue, so I figured maybe he was right. So...not drinking. And so far? Can't really tell if its having an effect or not. I'm definitely not having the same coughing issues when I lay down, but still having coughing spells in the middle of the night.
I went through a period a couple years ago where any time I drank whiskey, I'd wake up in the middle of the night choking on bile. In addition to the lovely sensation of waking up choking, it burned my throat, which made it feel like something was stuck in my throat for 24 hours and burning. On really fun nights, it'd occasionally find its way up my nose, too. Mentioned it to my mother, and turns out my sister was having the same problem, minus the whiskey. Her doc told her it was GERD and told her to sleep more upright, with her back against the wall. That worked for her. I tried it and it seemed to work. I stopped whiskey before bed for a while then I completely forgot about it until just now.

Somewhat skeptical. Probably wouldn't hurt me to not split a bottle of red wine with the GF every night at dinner. But just wondering if this is one of those general purpose things that they throw out just to placate people.

I joke, but with working from home, I actually have been starting earlier, but also ending earlier. I've noticed a huge difference in how I feel the mornings after I have had drinks.

The Founders Mas Agave seltzers are really, really good. They use real fruit juice so they're a little sweeter than the other seltzers out there and have a different flavor profile.

Interesting, I haven't seen this yet. I do have some Founder's Mas Agave beer. Gose with grapefruit juice aged in tequila barrels. It's a but strange, but I absolutely love it. Great for drinking on a hot day.

Had Laphroaig Select in my hands and went with the Laphroaig Triple Wood instead. I regret my choice. It's good, but not much smoke and just too much going on the flavors don't meld.

I have a friend that's the GM at a large liquor store in Denver. They did 4K the hour before the announcement, 15K in sales the hour after the announcement, and sold most of the in-house champagne.

They opened Indy's first Total Wine and Spirits a half mile from my house this week.

Several 4/6 packs, a bottle of Oban 14, and they had Patel Habano Toros for 6.49 in the cigar humi! Ya boy did some damage.

Now it's 40 degrees out and blowing 35 and not even nice enough to go sit out by the fire table and enjoy one :/

Switching to Topo Chico for a second, (and weed). Need a tiny break. What should I have next?

A) nothing
B) another Topo or Kombucha
C) Stella dark
D) an 18 yr Islay that I picked up after Scotland qualified for Euro 2021
