Flames lose their 11 consecutive season opener. The record is 13 by the Cleveland Browns.

Well, one game in the books and the Sharks didn't suck (although they tried to choke on the lead they held all game), so I'm exhaling a bit.
You guys who follow college hockey, are you familiar with John Leonard, who played at Boston University last year? He looked great for the Sharks last night. I think this kid sticks in the show.

I actually went to BU's page and was going to make up a fake scouting report using his stats and act like I knew a damn thing, but changed tack when I realized the error.sancarlos wrote: ↑Fri Jan 15, 2021 2:38 pmOh, yeah. The Penguins are done for awhile. I wonder what the chances are of Crosby (with his blessing of course) going somewhere else for the rest of his career.

Re: 2020-2021 NHL Regular Season Thread
I know Bobby Ryan won't play this well all season (four goals in three games after missing the opener), but he's playing like he knows he can get traded to a contender. He said all the right things about coming to Detroit and sounded genuine when doing so, but I'm sure all parties knew that the real goal of the Wings signing him was to flip him for an asset (and he probably felt he'd play on a top line and show what he could do).

Re: 2020-2021 NHL Regular Season Thread
Given the condensed regular season pretty glad the VGK figured out a way to keep Fleury even if it wasn’t intentional. It’s a ridiculous advantage to have two #1 goalies with 56 games in 100-ish days.

More of a video game thing but the hockey crew will appreciate it more:
I don’t know if it’s a licensing thing or what but I’m playing a 3-on-3 tour in NHL ‘21 and the Minnesota Wild Alumni team is the murderer’s row of Adam Hall, Chuck Kobasew, and Willie Mitchell.
My team of mascots isn’t ready for that.

Posting here because it seems like a better fit than other threads...
Watched "The Russian Five" documentary, as it ran on NHL Network around the holidays. It's about a 50-50 split on the Wings acquiring all five players starting with Sergei Fedorov's defection, then shifts to the group's on-ice exploits (the team's postseason struggles in the mid-90's, followed by winning the Cup in '97, the subsequent limousine wreck that ended Vladimir Konstantinov's career, and winning again in '98).
The first half is recommended for general interest, the second half is much more geared toward Detroit fans. And, of course, the tired Wings-Avalanche fight is mentioned with Darren McCarty again wringing tales out one of the few noteworthy moments in his career. He does mention Lemieux didn't turtle, but was actually briefly knocked out by the opening punch.
