He's a knucklehead about things that aren't soccer. When it's all you've done your whole life it may be easier to not be a knucklehead about that.

The impression I got from his time at DC was he was a player-coach and the players benefited from it. But I am not sure making him the Gaffer will prevent Derby from playing Blackpool next year.

Spent a lot of yesterday on the couch like so many Sundays of my past, except this time without a hangover. What to think of Barcelona? The Supercopa was played (Barca v. Athletic (not Atletico)). Two teams that take their identity seriously, one even more so than the other. Bilbao will only sign players with Basque heritage, or those who have come up through Basque youth systems. It was a pretty entertaining game held at a stadium in Seville that was not the home stadium of either Sevilla or Betis. The in place of fans signage was half in arabic, featuring Saudi companies, and the distance from the stands to the pitch was such that there was room for a full running track. Barca went up 1-0 late in the first half, Athletic tied it shortly thereafter. Barca went up 2-1 in the second half, Athletic tied it again shortly thereafter. The match went to the two full 15 minute periods of A.E.T. and Iñaki Williams scored an absolute worldie to put the Basque side up 3-2. Barca pressed a bunch after, and had a lot of chances, but couldn't bring it back level. Messi was sent off with a straight red that somewhat liked he punched a player from behind. It's likely more of a couple of poorly designed slaps, but either way just abject stupidity from him. The craziest thing about it is that it was Messi's first red card in his 753 matches with Barcelona.

Until everything is less insane, I'm mixing weed with wine.

Soccer needs to do away with offsides beyond about 25 or so yards from the goal. An offsides at midfield is ridiculous.

I want to go the other way. Once the ball is below the 18, no offsides.

So you're saying NASL had it right, with a 35-yard line for offsides.

Shootouts were also more exciting and fairer than penalties.

Offsides could only be a made up rule to address a particular problem (cherry picking?). Not sure how that could be a bigger problem than the ones it has caused.

I do think it'd be worth doing away with offsides entirely in one of the lower leagues, just to see how it changes the game.

I mean, it's a fundamental part of the game. I don't mind bringing the line down to 35 yards, as long as it's clearly marked. I don't like the idea of doing away with it below the 18, because now you're just going to be actively fucking with GK like hockey. It's a difficult enough job (large goal to cover) without having someone constantly posted up in your grill.

On this point, I'm surprised more teams don't fuck with GK on corner kicks. I HATED having someone impede me on those plays, and unless I specifically talked to the ref about it, teams that did it got away with it more the half the time.

ETA - And, wlu, I'm surprised teams didn't do more of this in that men's league up at the Plex. I've played on a few teams up there, and there was just one team that had figured this out and was in my business (by the rules) all night and it sucked.

Kind of to my point above, I've played in leagues that do this and it would radically change the game. I'm not sure for the better.

For example, I'm defending and I know I can't let my mark get behind me. Guess what the natural response of the defending team is going to be: Packing the entire team from goal line to the 30 yard line. It's not like the defending team is just going to play like there's still an offsides rule.

Not everyone though. At least one stays very very high at all time right. Probably two. That would require the team in possession to keep at least two and probably three behind those players. Tons of space in between. Would require at least 2 more for some sort of balance. Maybe it wouldn't work but I'd like to see it too.

I'm just saying, it's not going to magically unlock the field.

And the GK union is going to insist on a crease of some kind where you can enter with the ball or be in there for a few seconds, but can't just camp out indefinitely. Waive it off on corners.

Great point. Feels like that's the problem. Guys camped out in the smaller box like every play is a corner. Could easily a box that can't be entered at all with the ball.

All the inconsistent offsides calls. (Which are not the officials' fault. Since it is literally impossible for an official to simultaneously look at the last defender *and* at the guy with the ball, of course many of these calls will turn out wrong.)

That and also seems like it would open the game some to have an offsides line like in hockey. If you think of hockey and soccer as being similar in a lot of respects (they are), if it were possible to be offsides at any point on the ice, hockey would be kind of stupid and you'd miss a lot of exciting odd-man rushes/breakaways

ETA: I'm flexible on the location on the field, but I think anywhere around the 25-to-35 yards area would be the sweet spot for having a line behind which offsides wouldn't be illegal.

Do we still feel the calls are inconsistent with VAR?

In your scenario, there are no incisive passes behind the line. Because there is no line. No through balls. Speed and smart, well-timed runs will be less of a factor. We'll go back to big, target-style forwards. Sounds exciting.
