This American male figure skater Jeremy Abbott falls down on schedule. I didn't know skaters get Steve Sax/Mickey Tettelton syndrome.

And, Russian star, winner of four medals Plushenko withdrew, after stumbling during his warmups. His body just broke down, too many surgeries and injuries.

When a male figure skater is described as having a "crowd-pleasing style", that's code for "even gayer than usual."

In his defense, that was a hell of a move to avoid touching the stone.

Wouldn't have mattered. The Russians were throwing yellow (if you touch one of your own while it is moving it is a "burned" rock and removed from play) and it was a red rock he was trying to avoid (touch an opposition stone and they can put it where they "believe it would have finished" but in this case there was no doubt it was going out of play). You'll notice that his broom makes contact with a red rock as well; that's an illegal touch, a "burn". Couple of things . . . he should NOT have been standing there. The only reason he'd be there would be to sweep a rock either out of play or a rock moving closer to the button. None of that was going to happen. Not even close. This was a cannon of a throw by the Russians into a pile of opposition stones with the intention of moving as many Swiss (red) stones as possible. Standing at the point of high speed impact multiple contact? Of about 250-pounds of granite? On ice? Idiotic.

You watch world-class curlers when a blast is coming; they aren't standing in the rings at all let alone right over the button; one stands at the back of the house, back twelve-foot, just outside the rings around the center line. I kinda feel for the guy but fucking dumb dumb dumb. A parallel to this? Oh, let's say a boxing ref standing between the two fighters.

At least when Abbott fell he was consoled by Yuka Sato who still looks hot after all these years.

I used to love watching ski jumping, but after a few rounds of the various slopestyle competitions, it now seems really boring.

If you want to see a fantastic game of curling (mens) try the on-demand archive of China -v- Sweden from last night. At least the last few ends. And (degen will get this) to quote Vic Rauter "Oh my! Oh my! OH MY!"

Speaking of China . . . The Chinese men just defeated Norway to go to 5-1. Three-way tie for first place at 5-1 right now (China, Sweden, Scotland).

How big was that China win over Norway? The Chinese men have never won anything. Ever. Nothing. Norway's Thomas Ulsrud has been to 9 World championships, 12 European championships, and won the silver medal in Vancouver 2010. So where China now stands is enormous to them. Plus 5 wins probably gets you at least a tie-breaker if not a playoff spot.

I see also that their coach is Marcel Rocque. He's won 4 Briers and 3 World Championships playing lead for Ferbey/Nedohin. This also tells me that the Chinese men are clearly playing/training in Edmonton at the Saville Ice Center. They must be, for sure. That is the home of Kevin Martin, Val Sweeting, Renée Sonnenberg, Shitballs, etc etc etc. The Chinese wimminz team (Bingyu Wang, herself a world champion and Olympic bronze medalist) also play/train at Saville in Edmonton.

Apropos of nothing . . . the Taiwanese mens team plays out of my home club. I'm signed on as their spare (alternate) in case two of them are ever missing (there is five on that team). Hasn't happened yet. I hope it does! Mind you, their English is about the same level as my Chinese. Not really much of an obstacle in curling. Will have to bring the missus along for that.

And with a name like "Torah," not surprising that the sports fan section of the children of Israel would love it if she was one of us.

Nope. She's a Mormon.

Cute, but not cute enough to make a man quit caffeine.

Dumb curling question: Are they really called a "game"? Not a "match"?

I'd never seen the measuring instrument before. Basically a big compass. Pretty cool...

"Game" is most familiar, Dave. But you'll also hear a single game referred to as a match on occasion. Or a draw. The latter in the sense of tournament round-robins (like the Olympics). So tonight's women's match is the 6th draw (of ten, I believe). Although sometimes used to specify a single game, "draw" more often refers to the group of games being played simultaneously on the four sheets. Oddly, the same word "draw" is also the most common type of curling shot.

But, yes, game is the best (and most common) way to refer to an individual contest. IE - "Did you see what happened in the Scotland -v- Russia game?"

ETA: By the way, there are three types of measurement instruments. The one to which you are referring is for measuring, say, two rocks on the 8-foot circles, and is the most seen. There is also a measurement "stick" (they're all colloquially called sticks) for measuring the outside edge of the rings to determine if a stone is in the house or not. And there is a third, less seen, for measuring two rocks that are ridiculously close to the button "hole" at the center of the one-foot circle (button); it's quite small, about the size of a small 12" t-square.

Almost as great as playing on the wider hockey rink. I know it will never happen, but I wish the NHL would go to a wider rink.

And Ryan Kesler has some balls to block that slap shot. Wouldn't be surprised if he broke his hand.
