As one of the resident Bucs fans on this board, I gotta say that I'm pleased with the Bucs' off-season so far.

Like I just saw the Jets signed Corey Davis to 3 years, $37.5M with $27M guaranteed. Just a ridiculous signing, especially with the cap going down this year. With how easy the NFL makes it to retain not only elite, but even very good players, you have to put a huge question mark on almost any player that actually manages to make it to FA and assume there's a good reason for it and throwing huge money at the guys that do make it through almost never works (though I will say that in general teams seem to be wising up with regards to term in these deals. I don't know if that's a COVID thing with the cap down or a trend, but it bodes well for teams to not have to continually be eating millions in dead money every year.)

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
No problem. They've actually signed a handful of exclusive rights free agents, Cairo Santos (kicker), Pat O'Donnell (punter) and Mario Edwards Jr. (rotational defensive end who has a two-game suspension to start next season and "misdemeanor assault on a female" charge hanging over his head). Banner offseason.
Besides, they're going for Alex Smith because he previously played in the Andy Reid offense. That'll make watching games even more fun.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
So what's the alternative for a team that lost so much of its roster after years of winning, being pinned to a tight cap situation, and with bad draft picks? Before the Covid opt out last year, they barely had space to sign Cam Newton to a low contract. After the opt outs, nobody good was available, so their roster had many weaknesses. Now they have tons of cap space when other teams don't; so they shouldn't go after these players and if they do, you say it's because Tom Brady won a Super Bowl without him?
Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
There aren’t great options in that situation, no. You gotta take a couple swings in FA for sure but you’re not gonna hit on that many signings it’s been tried and tried again and it never works. The Pats have been in the enviable position on using their cap space on guys they’ve drafted and developed for the most part.

I mean if anyone can tell you this strategy never works you should believe it from Lions, Bears and Bengals fans.

I mean, yeah. Bengals owned FA last year, and...
Then again, they are apparently sitting this one out, and that's gonna equally suck.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
Totally depends on who you sign for what money under what terms. What other teams do has no bearing. Pats have way more talent than they did yesterday. Maybe they'll be hamstrung later by these contracts if too many guys miss. We'll see how good a contracts guy matt patricia is.

On a different note, the Chiefs getting Thuney should be a great move for them. What has most directly sparked such an aggressive approach, according to those familiar with the thinking, is the view the 2021 offseason was a rare opportunity based on the NFL's plummeting salary cap.
Remember, the cap dropped to $182.5 million this year. It was $198.2 million in 2020, so this marked the first drop since the collective bargaining agreement of 2011.Because of that, it thinned the field of teams the Patriots were competing against for free agents because many teams were scrambling just to get under the cap. That sweetened the free-agent pool, making players in the prime years of their career available who might have otherwise not hit the market; consider that Smith and Bourne are 25, Godchaux and Mills are 26, Agholor is 27 and Judon 28.
So with an abundance of salary-cap space to work with, and knowing the cap is going to spike in the coming years because of new television broadcast deals, Belichick and the Patriots went all-in like never before.
In the perfect Patriots world, they have capitalized on unprecedented market conditions, dramatically improving the team.
In the worst-case scenario, they have overthought it, strayed too far from their draft-and-develop roots by committing too much to non-homegrown players, and will ultimately pay a similar price that other teams who also "won" free agency in March have in past years.

I don't think the Chiefs are done on the offensive line after Thuney either. I wouldn't be shocked if they get Trent Williams and then hope that Lucas Niang is ready to play at RT to start the season/draft another tackle fairly early.
I would also bet they try to sign a wide receiver fairly reasonably and then address everywhere else in the draft.

Day one. Free agency can be won in the later stages. Better after guys realize the market isn't there.

The non-stop anger of Bengals twitter finally got some action...Trey Hendrickson. A Lawson replacement. Prob a downgrade but at least it isn't drowning.GoodKarma wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 9:30 pmSo much for Duke Tobins’s “we are certainly not going to sit on our hands” comment from last week.tennbengal wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 8:39 pm I mean, yeah. After watching a lot of the 49ers last season, I don’t think Trent Williams is the Trent Williams of old anymore. IMHO, if somebody gives him a fat deal, they’ll regret it.

I can't believe the Seahawks are even considering trading Russell Wilson.

I know it's just a rumour from an anonymous source, but look at the headline of this story from the NY Daily News...
Pete Carroll high on Sam Darnold as possible Russell Wilson replacement: source

It sure would be funny if this was Seattle trying to chase their 1st round picks from the Adams trade back down.

I think they're filling holes in FA so Bill can package more picks (and maybe Gilmore?) to move up to get Lance.
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
Hope not. Id rather they go triple option with the type of talent they have. Definitely 2TE. If they can get Andrews back the OL could be a strength without Thuney. They need a MLB. That should be the 1st round pick. Knowing Belichick hell probably draft 3, a couple special teams guys, a middy and a Naval Air Reserve officer.

Any Jets fans left in here? Syb?
Carl Lawson is a GREAT human being. Like, a ton of fun. A really good guy. He's a really good Edge too, but your team is simply more interesting just having him on it. Sorry to see him go. Huge Anime fan too.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
Great to know. The team is really lacking in personality. Darnold is an incredible guy and constantly quietly engaged in the community and working with sick kids, but he is very low key and bordering on dull (not intelligence, just boring). Avery Williamson isn't known as a big personality guy, but he was probably the biggest personality on the team until the traded him. Seems like an awful lot of money the Jets threw at Lawson, but my son said that despite only 5 sacks last year, he was the second most effective pass rusher according to some metric I don't understand.tennbengal wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 11:54 am Any Jets fans left in here? He got a ton of pressures. No help on the d-line most of the year due to injuries - so he didn't get a lot of finishes.
He went on the podcast The Athletic Bengals writers do just after the Bengals didn't tag him, and it was hilarious. Not too long a listen - worth your time:

Literally laughed out loud at him talking about some of the social media reactions.

Why do the Raiders hate their O-Line so much. They just released Hudson.

They had been mentioned as one of those teams possibly trading for Deshaun Watson, so maybe this was clearing some cap space?degenerasian wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 2:20 pm Why do the Raiders hate their O-Line so much. They just released Hudson.

Well, the Titans have managed to spunk away 11 of 22 starters. So you know, they'll still be shit...
