Your certainty intimidates me. I don't think I can argue against it. And Kaprizov had a hat trick last night. Can't argue against that, either.

McDavid had 3 more points. He has 17/34/51 thru 29 games. Draisaitl has 44 points. They've been playing on the same line again. The Oilers have reached the 'break glass in case of emergency' stage of left-wing production.

Whenever Blake Coleman signs elsewhere, he gets my vote for swampteam.

Jack Johnson on waivers in case anyone’s team needs a 7th pair left D.

He's great too. Much more of a glue guy, and not that Blake is flashy, but Barclay is matte finish in comparison. Those two wings had been great with Yanni Gourde centering that line, and Coop just subbed Tyler Johnson in for Gourde and it's done wonders for TJ.

If this team had been assembled 6 or 7 years ago, Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat probably would have been on it. (And I would have weirdly been lobbying for Darren Helm.) But then Kucherov had the poor manners to grow into a superstar, and nobody pays attention to Johnson and Palat anymore.

Have you been following the story of the Russian junior player who was hit by a puck this weekend? Timur Faizutdinov. He was on life support, but the hospital in Yaroslavl wasn't capable of performing the necessary surgery. He's reportedly being transported to Moscow now, a couple of days later. Awful situation.

I accidentally saw the play when I was looking for info yesterday. Wish that I hadn't, but even so, it didn't look like much of anything.

If the season ended at the halfway point, it would be Toronto v. Montreal in the first round and how crazy would that be? When was the last time those two franchises met in the playoffs?

NHL has really bad luck with playoff matchups.

Canadiens-Leafs have not met since 79, despite being in the same division since 99
Oilers and Flames have not met since 91
Rangers and Islanders have not met since 94
Ducks and Kings have never met
Panthers and Lightning have never met.

The Vegas Golden Knights have as many regular season regulation wins against San Jose in the last 30 minutes as San Jose has against Vegas in the franchise’s entire history.

Horrible story. Maybe if this had happened in Moscow or St. Petersburg instead of Yaroslavl, and he had received better immediate treatment, this would have turned out differently. Reminds me of Alexie Cherepanov.

Yesterday, the NHL Network old boys club was carping a little bit about Kaprizov winning the Calder, because he is 24 (instead of 19, I guess).

It's an argument to be had. He's been playing professionally for years. Same as Panarin when he came over here. (Same as Ichiro when he went to the Mariners.)

There is a big difference between an 18- or 19-year-old entering the league and a 23-year-old. This takes nothing away from Kaprizov, tho, especially since he had never played on the smaller North American ice before.

Yeah, I can go either way on factoring age into rookie, usually depending on who the old winner would be and who the young winner would be.

I don't particularly care. But if, say, McDavid hadn't missed half his rookie season with a broken collarbone and still lost the award to Panarin, I probably would have been annoyed.

I think a special recognition should be given to draft+1 players who enter the league. This is only a small handful each year, and most years there isn't a great standout. (Hughes and Kakko didn't do much last year.) Tim Stutzle is doing some amazing things right now. But he's not going to win any awards unless some kindhearted Senators fan decides to bake him a cake or something.

Ovi is having a nice week.
Just moments ago passed Phil Esposito for Goals on a PP from Ovi's office. He is now 16 back from Marcel Dionne and 26 back from Brett Hull
Passes Jagr on shots (only following Borque) and nearly 2000 shots above Stall
Now 1301 points. 2nd for active players (Thorton is #1 and Crosby is 9 back of Ovi)

well, Ralphie's gone after consecutive loss #12

I was duped, we were all duped. but it's far too late for anything now.

(honestly if they hire another ex-Sabre or someone "they know and trust" the Pegulas could finally put the nail in the coffin of this franchise. It's astounding...)

There's expansion and the low cap and shit, but any team wanting Eichel should be making their push now before the franchise becomes competent again.

thing is with this roster* any observant and non-stubborn coach should be able to get a nearly 500 record out of them (maybe not in this division but still). The team was made for offence and lots of it and I won't bother boring this thread with the reasons (Skinner, Okposo, Eakin, Oloffson, Dahlin [oh dear god] are some keywords) but Freddie Krueger coached them out of all creativity. No defensive rushes out of their zone, not engaging the D, dump and chase, less emphasis on cycling. crazy.

*completely ignoring the fact that nearly every said talented player has regressed in a huge way this year. whoever it is will have to coach the shit outta them - like, literally. purge the shit that's been instilled since summer.

Getting him off the Caps postgame would be good too...he is not good on TV at all. I can't image sitting in a locker with him stumbling and bumbling through the point he is trying to make or motivate his team (and I know because I am bad in the same way at the motivational speech as a coach).

Just a disaster for the Sabres. I hope their next hire is the right guy. I don't know what else to say about this team.

Is Taylor Hall actually okay? I was shocked to see him back in the game after taking a slapshot to the face last night. (After being cross-checked in the back and knocked down by Subban.)

yeah that says something that he came back, doesn't it?

That kind of play - not picking on PK necessarily - is awful and has to be looked at. Watching games, this happens all the damn time - just as a shot is coming a defenceman will cross-check a screening forward in the slot. Cross-checking could be called 10-20 times every game, it really bothers me. And Hall could have been much more seriously-injured, obviously.

It's a penalty. It's in the books. It's just never called. I don't know why it's an accepted part of the game.
