I didn't follow outside of the A-10 but it looks like it was strong year for HWCUs.

My Hoosier friends are very happy with this news. Missing the tourney 4 straight years doesn't fly at IU.

In the last 25 years, IU has made the tournament 11 times (I'm giving them credit for last year even though they technically nobody got a bid). They've made it to the sweet 16 or beyond 4 times in those 25 years. They've been a 4 seed or better only 3 times.

Indiana is NOT a blue blood program and frankly they aren't even elite and haven't been since the 80s. They lived off the mystique of Bobby Knight and Hoosiers for way longer than they should have. I doubt anyone over the age of 40 who doesn't live in Indiana thinks of them as a destination program.

The Knight delusion still runs deep with the Hoosier faithful. They are convinced that if they get the 'right' coach who understands the 'Hoosier Way', everything will be great again.

I'm seeing a lot of Dane Fife talk from my IU friends...

Pure rumor/speculation, but MI message boards are wringing their hands over Beilein winding up in Bloomington.

He has said he'd like to get back to coaching... That would be a tremendous hire, IMO.

Krzyzewski is 73 and would be hired at literally almost every school in the country if he left Duke tomorrow and wanted a new job. I assume the thinking on Indiana's part would be Beilein could get them back to respectability and give them at least five solid years, which probably isn't too far-fetched.

Beilein will coach a high level D1 team next season. He's still doing quite well health wise. I can see him coaching 4-5 years minimum. It only took him 3 years to turn MI completely around.

(PPL forget, perhaps, that he took over after Tommy Amacker with pretty much NOTHING in terms of momentum and top level talent. By his 4th year, they were exceeding league expectations and making a decent run in March. By his fifth year, they shared a big 10 title.)

He left MI in amazing shape. There are a ton of schools that would take 5-6 years of foundation building by this guy.

Oh, I'm not knocking his coaching. He's a great coach. I just think that I'd take a shot a younger guy first - Nate Oats, Chris Beard, etc. Granted, I'm not sure either of those guys would be available, but maybe they'd rather be at a basketball school.

I'm not sure you could get any of those guys to Indiana in the state it's in (the program, not the literal state though that doesn't help either).

If you give Beilein five years, maybe you can get some stud young coach to take over in 2025 or 2026 though.

Yeah, I got where you were coming from Dave, I'm just saying (like Brian) that an alternative to getting a young coach is getting a proven program builder that can hand something over turnkey to a young guy in 5-7 years.

Fair enough. I guess if I were an Indiana fan, I'd be more than happy with Beilein. Near guarantee of success for the next 5-7 years.

Would love to see the Hoosiers go after Musselman. Not sure Alabama lets Oates go and I don't see Beard leaving the state of Texas.

I read an article on Yahoo that speculated Scott Drew of Baylor is a guy they might pursue and who might be interested in the job, being an Indiana native, etc.

Paulsen out at George Mason is an interesting one. A quick google says his contract was up after next year so it sure seems like "couldn't agree on an extension" over performance given that they were performing pretty well, all things considered.

(Unless they're aiming to be a more sports successful Liberty or something.)

Oats is the guy I wanted to replace Boeheim, but he just got a new extension at $3.225 million a year through 2025-26 and his buyout has been reported to be $12 million.

Musselman is terrific (has been pretty much everywhere). Beard is going to get some of the old money interested because he was an assistant under Bob (and Pat) Knight for ten years at Tech.

Yeah, Waco sucks. It's not even in the 20 best cities in Texas, which itself is mostly a horrible state with the exception of a few decent places that should be expected just by the sheer size of the state.

Like Texas has some cool shit going for it, but for a state that fucking big, it had better at least have a place like Austin and some of the cool shit about Houston like the food and a decent beach or two. Texas pulls along at the bare-ass minimum for a state that big.

Wasn't a knock on Bloomington. Was a question of if Drew would leave a top tier program that he built for a program that needs to be given enough time to "rebuild" with a fan base that is impatient.

The only way it makes sense is if he feels some personal tug to go back to his home state. Baylor University is just fucking awful, but clearly that doesn't bother Drew, and they've built a sports powerhouse there, at least in football and basketball. I'm not sure what Indiana offers him basketball-wise.

Considering Valpo is in the Region, I doubt there is a pull to be "home" by going to IU.

Yeah, grew up there. It was depressing enough then, last time I was back there was a little over 7 years ago and it was so much worse. Outside of the colleges, and the federal prison, didn't look like there's anything of any significance left.
