Oh definitely, but if this is a step in getting that out of the game, that would be great. Peel's apparently a fucking asshole anyway.

Yeah, he was probably being made an example of, but it's the right guy at the right time. Maybe the message filters down to the rest of the refs that they shouldn't be managing the games any more too.

My thought is it wasn't the referees making that decision in the first place. The NHL (like the NBA does) tells them to do this and then when someone gets caught letting the secret out, they get thrown under the bus.

Okay, so now that Peel isn't reffing games anymore everything is okay, and the refs definitely won't continue to do the exact thing that Peel was caught doing, as directed by the NHL. Everything is just resolved so nicely

Hearing Peel may have been set to retire at end of season. All of the above comments about this have been right, but I'm fully on board with sending a clear message about this shit.

You have to believe that the NHL actually demands this, which is a little more far-fetched. I believe there are officials that do it, but of their own accord. I don't think that the good refs like McCauley do it.

Seems pretty analogous to MLB's pivot to villainized PED players.

Was Peel really due to retire at the end of this season or is that his buddy Wyshynski trying to help burnish his legacy by essentially allowing Peel to say "you can't fire me, I quit"?

The NHL demands this, you can see trends. They want close games and parity. Also if you watch international hockey, world championships, world juniors, the officiating is totally different.

What you rarely see in the NHL is consecutive penalties. Say you're on the PP and attacking, the penalty killers are tired and the player comes out of the box to join the play. The attack is continuing because the defending team is pinned in their own zone because they're tired and disoriented (they may have weird combos or 3 defensemen out there). But a 2nd penalty is never called as the defending team is hooking and grabbing trying to survive.

I want to say he was going to retire after last season but broke his leg and didn't want to go out like that? I think its legit.

You may have a point with refs not calling a second penalty when a team is on a PP but I see consecutive penalties called on the same team all the time, just not where it would create a 5-on-3 (to get the penalty to create a 5-on-3 it's gotta be especially egregious.

Again, I agree there are substandard refs, but I don't think it's some kind of secret league policy. I think the problem is the same as the so-called "liberal media". The mass media in the US goes overboard to normalize absolutely fucked up behavior from the right out of a fear of seeming biased, while NHL officials are concerned (subliminally, not overtly) with calling too many penalties in a row on Team A even if they deserve it. I've seen lately this seems to happen less than it used to though.

But I think that's the human nature of it, not Gary Bettman twirling his mustache in Toronto.

I'd heard it before the Wysh tweet, if that helps.

Had gotten into the basically every other day Caps game flow (sort of like playoff cadence). The 4 day break has been strange.

I know their defense is a mess and all that, but I had no idea just how terrible Carter Hart has been playing. If he fails, the curse might be legit.

The NHL or it's refs just can't decide what's a penalty. Here's a play from last night involving Carter and Couture.

What is the call?
[+] spoiler
Minor for high sticking. How is that high sticking? Did the ref think it was a butt end? Then that's a major for butt ending which would also qualify for a review to make sure it's correct.

I had to watch until the last replay + explanation to understand what even happened. I just assumed he was off balance and hit his head on the ice.

Seems far more unfortunate and maybe careless than predatory BUT if you do away with open ice hits you can eliminate this sort of thing too.

I don't know the rule book by memory, but that's either interference or butt end.

I don't think it can interference. Couture has the puck and just dumped it in.

That's a butt-end, pretty clearly, and it should've been a major penalty (at least by the book.)

is that a foul if he does not extend the arm (shoulder to shoulder)? This is the kind of thing that is hard to say is dirty versus sloppy. At slow mo you can see the arm go up after the initial contact, but at full speed that is two bodies and maybe an arm coming up as he pushes off to skate.

One of the great refs I work with in lacrosse (NCAA final four level and World Games experience/international evaluator) teaches sometimes the right call is not technically the right call (hold versus trip).

Valiquette spent a solid two minutes of the intermission showing clips and breaking down how awful Hart is playing the cross ice passes. Like he was borderline shocked how easily he was biting on the first sign of danger and how bad he was getting back across.

I don’t see Philly much, so I’ll defer to you, but my post was based on Kevin Weekes blaming their team defense more than Hart as he showed highlights (lowlights).

Oh, that’s for sure a part of it, but he’s also last in all types of xGoals categories too. And AV just doesn’t know how to run a team without a proven HoF caliber goalie.

Zadorov just destroyed Hornqvist at the offensive blueline. He literally lifted him off the ground with an open ice hit, and it was 100% clean and devastating. Hornqvist immediately signaled for help from the bench and was very, very wobbly going off the ice.

I assume he's concussed based purely on impact, not even a headshot involved, but he got absolutely rocked. Perhaps he's just winded, we'll see. It didn't look good.

One is two guys desperately trying to stand still on ice and one is a car crash so I can agree with you there.

RE: Zadorov: that's a monster. It's clean by the book. You hate to see anyone get hurt but there's a reason they teach you from the time you're in mites to skate with your head up. Hornquist is looking backwards and down for 5 seconds there and never checks where he's going. That's a recipe to eat a big time hit in the NHL.
