I don't want to derail this thread, but man, I have some complicated thoughts about all of this.

Anyway, I hope that Fleury's daughter is happier tonight. We all love Fleury already, but I guess we have to love his daughter now, too, even if she has sub-par spelling.

I just read that Paul was 34 pounds heavier than Mayweather at the weigh in.

Shamefully, I'll probably miss the Avs/Vegas game for the Mayweather/Paul farce. Don't judge me.
You know the best result is the OIlers got swept by the Jets, who then got swept by the Habs who then got swept by whoever.

I'll save my Oilers thoughts for the offseason thread. Do we have an offseason thread? No? Great. Let's talk about something else.

As odious as Mayweather is you could make a legit argument the Paul brothers are worse (not to threadjack)

I mean, there seems to be more interest in this fight than Habs/Jets. And Ocho Cinco is on the undercard. And Mauro Renallo is on commentary. I know where my interest lies tonight.

Hands up if you predicted Montreal would win six straight (and counting) playoff games.

I was worried the North would cause a schedule gap, but looking like they may be first one done.

Big decisions in Colorado now. Is Bedner the guy? Is Grubauer? This is a small window.

The clock on Colorado is MacKinnon’s contract. Once he’s paid what he’s worth ($13-14m a year) it gets harder to keep the band together.

Isn't Landeskog a UFA? That seems like a pretty huge decision point already from a standpoint of either needing to resign or replace him.

Yeah Landeskog’s a UFA. Makar’s rookie deal is up this year and he’s an RFA. That’s going to cost them as well.

Him or Fox winning the Norris could be insanely expensive.

It shouldn't be, but it will be Hedman. His stats, advanced and boxcar, dipped big time when he hurt his foot/leg in March. Norris is almost always a career award for some reason. Too many lazy writers generally, and specifically this year when locals only followed their division.

That's actually why I think it'll be Makar; Colorado's regular season dominance transcended the divisional formats.

A bit surprising that there are no divisional top seeds left, but not really. Much more likely to occur in the NHL than any of the other major sports.

Regular season and playoffs are more different in the NHL then in any other league so seedings are thrown out the window.

The last 6 Presidents Trophy have failed to pass the 2nd round. Last 8 failed to pass the 3rd round. That's not good for the sport.

(Technically, VGK had same number of points as Colorado but yeah. Even given that 3 of the 4 teams are returnees to the semis which probably hasn’t happened in quite some time. Been trying to figure out how long it’s been.)

1977 - Montreal, NY Islanders, Philadelphia, Boston
1978 - Montreal, Toronto, Philadelphia, Boston

These were the 1 vs. 16 playoff days.

I remember a few years ago when all four lower Western seeds won in the first round and the 8th western seeded Kings won the Cup. (Over the Pete DeBoer-coached Devils.)

I imagine the media will have fun in the next series, comparing the play of Pacioretty vs that of Suzuki/Tatar.

I generally think more should be made of President's Trophy winners, but to say that them not advancing in the playoffs is bad for the sport is a bit of a stretch if you ask me.

Consecutively I think it's bad. We're not even talking about winning it all or losing in the final. We're talking about advancing past Round 2. That would be like Stephen Curry's Golden State Warriors putting up 65-70 win seasons and never advancing past Round 2.

That's insane. People who lived through the early 80s and felt the 1940 chant should never be rooting for the Islanders.
