I'm thinking that the two Stanley Cups since then have given him some confidence. But, y'know, nobody acted that surprised when he wasn't named to Team Canada.

Good to hear. When I was driving home early this morning, heard Team 1040 (a local sports station) say Torts didn't want him to play but it was really Henrietta's decision.

Yikes.
Kris Letang's mystery illness is not believed life threatening, but the Penguins are not sure when he will play again this season, multiple sources told the Tribune-Review.

The team planned to update Letang's condition Friday.

There were concerns last week that Letang's season — if not his career — could be in jeopardy because of the illness, the sources said.
ETA: Letang had a stroke, and doctors found a small hole in his heart. He'll be out at least 6 weeks.

Ovie likely won't be back with the Caps when the NHL season starts back up as the Caps have told him to stay with his family as long as he needs to.

Blues have acquired goaltender Ryan Miller and forward Steve Ott from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Jaroslav Halak, Chris Stewart, William Carrier, a first-round pick in 2015 and a third-round draft pick in 2016.

Great deal for Buffalo. Halak is a younger version of Miller (career save pct. almost the same.) Chris Stewart is a younger version of Steve Ott. Plus the picks.

Safe to say the Sabres are doing their best Cleveland Browns impersonation.

Pat LaFontaine resigned his role as president of hockey operations.

I'm not loving the circus atmosphere of the Sabres' weekend tire fire, but I'll be damned if I could figure out what LaFontaine was going to do as President of Hockey Operations after he hired the GM. I don't buy the story about wanting to go back to NYC. The upper-level machinations seem to stay behind closed doors down there, so I hope some credible story comes out before too long. I don't think Nolan is here for the long haul either, whether he turns down a new contract (AGAIN) or just gets run off after a year or so. His "Does not play well with others" tag seems to fit, and you can probably paint Patty with that same brush.

OTOH, I'm really digging Tim Murray as GM, that bug-eyed Dwight Schrute-looking bastard. Seems decisive and straight-shooting.

Martin St. Louis for Ryan Callahan + 1st + 2nd confirmed.

I think that's a good deal for Tampa.

They are both free agents at the end of the season, right?

ETA: Only Callahan is a free agent. So, if he walks, Tampa just got a rental plus the picks.

I think that deal is WAY slanted towards TB. Good move for the future. Trying to figure out NYR's thought process here. MSL is 38. Was this just because the team has underachieved this season?

Marian Gaborik to the Kings. This one concerns me a bit, as the Kings needed more scoring punch, and they are likely the Sharks' first round playoff opponent. But, on the other hand, Gaborik seems like a bad fit in Los Angeles. The Kings play a "heavy" game, with a lot of hitting and emphasis on defense. None of which describes Gaborik.

David Legwand to the Red Wings. No report on what they gave up. Hopefully not much.

(I like the deal if only because I remember watching Legwand play with Plymouth in the OHL back right after I graduated college and moved to that part of Detroit.)

I'm certainly in favor of it. Marty has gotten very lackadasical in the past few years. There have been multiple games where he's had bad turnovers lead to opposition goals. Plus, he's been a real prima donna about the Olympics snub. Thanks for the memories, now piss off elsewhere.

Wiping off two years of $5.625m for an over the hill player, getting two high picks, and a 2 month rental in exchange? Completely worth it.

I love Callahan, but I get it - he's is overrated and only good for 60 games a year. Kinda like Derek Jeter.

But how the fuck do you give up Callahan, AND a 1st rounder AND potential 2nd rounder for a 38 year old guy?

I like MSL, but only based on what I've seen of him, which is quite little. Finesse players and MSG ice aren't a good mix.

He's finesse juxtaposed with Callahan, who is a pregnant yak by comparison.

But he was my pregnant yak.

(also, I thought MSL was FA as well, but this is not the case, so the trade makes a little more sense.)

Nick Lidstrom's #5 goes up into the Joe Louis rafters tonight. All the living Red Wings with retired jerseys are going to be there as well (Howe, Lindsey, Delvecchio and Yzerman). Should be pretty special.

Better than Hasek? Forsberg? Jagr? Selenne? Best European defenseman? Sure. Best player (though obviously subjective)? Not so sure.

I believe so, totally transformed that Detroit team.
Plus all the accolades
20 straight years in the playoffs
4 cups
7 norris'
12 all-stars
world championship, olympic gold medal

Jagr and Selanne would be good arguments as well. Hasek struggled at times and Forsberg was injured a lot.

The Wings might be mediocre these days, but they still put on a good jersey retirement ceremony. Almost got a little dusty a couple of times. Hard to imagine another player recreating Lidstrom's achievements in the next generation or two.

Four Stanley Cups
Seven Norris Trophies (all after age 31)
A Conn Smythe Trophy
20 straight playoff appearances
A career plus/minus of something crazy like +500

He might have played with more Hall of Famers than any player in the last 30 or 40 years (11 at least by my reckoning -- Slava Fetisov, Igor Larionov, Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull, Dominic Hasek*, Chris Chelios, Dino Ciccarelli, Larry Murphy and Mike Modano*). And that's if you don't include Ken Holland* and Scotty Bowman and assumes guys like Chris Osgood, Curtis Joseph, Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk don't end up in Toronto one day.
