This seems similar to when Howard Stern went more mainstream. There's outrage about the shitty things they've done, but they keep growing in popularity due to value beyond the attention seeking stuff. They have very popular baseball podcasts (barstool not Howard Stern) and popular personalities who have good access to many athletes. They also play the social media game really well with an enthusiasm to sports that other media lacks. When anything happens in baseball, I'll usually see a detailed breakdown/discussion/argument first from the likes of Jomboy and Jared Carabis (maybe Jomboy would have been safer than barstool, but I don't think they have a gambling connection). I don't really understand the gambling aspect at all, but I know barstool has been very aggressive in the online gambling market, and MLB seems very enthusiastic to tap into that. Anyway, there is a chance Portnoy fucks it all up unlike Stern who either matured or was smart enough to change his tone on the asshole/sexism stuff.

Plenty of N words from Portnoy in the not too distant past. That's who he is. What kind of rehab is needed to overlook that? And the rest of what his site is in terms of homophobia and misogny? And why in the fuck is MLB in the business of trying to rehab them? Or approving of that? Fuck Manfred.

This.

Barstool makes its name by being a site for men - a modern He-Man Woman Haters' Club.

Which, fine, the First Amendment is a thing. But why the fuck would MLB associate itself with that? Are they trying to drive the last female fan away from the game?

It's like Trevor Bauer squared.

I bet(!!!) the incessant misogyny ends up being an even bigger hurdle.

MLB isn't trying to rehab anything. They're trying to tap into Barstool's demographic, social media, and gambling clout to make more money. Is there a better, safer way of doing that? I don't know. Maybe they balanced the risk of pissing off a lot of fans with the gains they could make and thought it was worth it. Or maybe they're just desperately trying stuff without research and hoping something sticks. I get people not wanting to look past Portnoys sins, but if you are able to, they do some things well that promotes sports fandom (and of course, making money).

I have a hard time getting behind that. Barstool sucks and it pains me that a national institution like MLB blithely looks past "their sins" and does a risk/reward analysis that only weights bad associations as a business risk.

For all the bleating about "cancel culture" Portnoy and Barstool are proof that they're no such thing if you're rich enough, straight enough and white enough.

Wonder if this has ever been done from the 7th inning on. Every time NY scored, KC tied, for the 7th through the 10th.

Ok, so if that's only the 3rd and 4th time that teams have scored in 7th - 11th, its pretty reasonable to guess its the first time a home team has matched the away team in 7th - 10th. Even while I was saying stuff like "god dammit" and "jesus fucking christ" at midnight, I kinda felt like maybe I was seeing something rare.

That game looked like it was going to be a great pitchers' duel between Scherzer (3.1IP, 6H, 0R, 0BB, 6K) and Nola (4IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 7K) until the skies opened up and they didn't come back after the rain delay. Dodgers bullpen v. Phillies bullpen ended exactly how you thought it would.

Oldest made a fall ball team so I'm going to show her that Turner slide as what I expect ever time.

(She's semi-friends with the coach's kid and I'm thinking she may have made it as a non-disruptive bench/rotation kid who isn't out of place when she's out there and who could benefit from better instruction.)

Getaway day lineups are always a little messy but Boone seems to really embrace making outs as quickly as possible so today should be interesting. Would be all pitchers in the field if they'd won yesterday.

It was Nola’s first decent outing in a minute. Would have liked to have kept it close to the end.

Since there was the owners' meeting about Spider Tack on June 3:

Miguel Cabrera, before and after: .188/.263/.285 /// .308/.356/.476

He hasn't had an OPS over .746 in a full season since 2016.

Ohtani hits the free market in 2023. Assume no injuries and no significant loss of production. What’s his FA deal? I mean gotta be looking at something like 8 yrs, $400M or something close to $50M on average right?

I was lucky enough three years ago to hit the Field of Dreams field during a stadium tour we did, and have a catch (yes, have a catch) with my dad on the field. What they're playing on looks nothing like where we were.

That's how I'm remembering it. "Let's go have a catch." Another way of saying it is if you've got a few kids..."Let's go throw the ball around."

Play catch? I think that's for selling the sport to a kid you don't want to spend his youth building model trains.
