So I think any one of us could sue anyone in Texas for violating the abortion law, and not be subject to attorney fees. I suppose lawyers who file such lawsuits might be subject to bar discipline for bringing baseless claims. But any non-lawyers should be fine.

On top of the very obvious and very odious repercussions of the law - it also smacks of being the start of a Stasi-type culture of informants.

DOJ's lawsuit against Texas has dropped.

They're reaching pretty hard to find a legally cognizable justification for the United States to sue the State of Texas on this. Among other things, DOJ is arguing that the Texas law impermissibly regulates the federal government by doing things like interfering with federal women's prisons providing abortions to inmates.

I hope like hell it will work, but ultimately those five Justices still hold all the cards.
