Steve of phpBB wrote: Fri Sep 03, 2021 4:08 pm I think maybe this is the key:
(i) Notwithstanding any other law, a court may not award
costs or attorney's fees under the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure or
any other rule adopted by the supreme court under Section 22.004,
Government Code, to a defendant in an action brought under this
section.
So I think any one of us could sue anyone in Texas for violating the abortion law, and not be subject to attorney fees. I suppose lawyers who file such lawsuits might be subject to bar discipline for bringing baseless claims. But any non-lawyers should be fine.
On top of the very obvious and very odious repercussions of the law - it also smacks of being the start of a Stasi-type culture of informants.

DOJ's lawsuit against Texas has dropped.

https://www.justsecurity.org/wp-content ... it-doj.pdf

They're reaching pretty hard to find a legally cognizable justification for the United States to sue the State of Texas on this. Among other things, DOJ is arguing that the Texas law impermissibly regulates the federal government by doing things like interfering with federal women's prisons providing abortions to inmates.

I hope like hell it will work, but ultimately those five Justices still hold all the cards.

Presented without comment except to comment that repeated compromising with or losing because of this guy will end up infinitely more damaging than simply losing without him. How many times do you let him shoot his hostage before you stop allowing him to take any?

Why the more progressive wing hasn't gone full oppo research against him is beyond me. The guy is beholden to the coal industry and his daughter helped to make sure EpiPen prices stayed expensive.

Like, there's so much dirt on him. He's a fuckbag. He needs to go. Piece of shit.

Oh, but we need judges! That's right.

How come Democrats can't do the same thing when they're in the minority?

Hawley says he'll hold up State and Defense Department nominees unless Blinken and Austin resign

Holy crap, that's the town where my family (uncle and two cousins) live. It's a great little town.

And since we're talking about inactive Swampers elsewhere, eerrx(?) was from that area, too.

Republicans had matching uniforms...Dems were wearing their own shirts and hats (often local to their district).
