In Salt Lake City, with family to see my sister for probably the last time. Wouldn't wish this MSA on anyone. Hard to have conversations with my brother-in-law about living wills, DNR's, funeral arrangements, etc. Even harder to watch my parents saying good-bye to their oldest child.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. It was very very hard watching my parents say goodbye to my sister last night. It was hard for myself to say goodbye to her as well, but seeing the heartbreak on my mom's face was wrenching.

My other sister (who is an ICU nurse) and I had a long chat with my brother-in-law about the path forward for them. We told him he absolutely has to have conversations about DNR, feeding tubes, etc. And he needs to have the arrangements in place for getting her into a full care facility. My sister is able to be at home still, for now, but that won't be the case much longer. She can barely speak, and her vision is going rapidly. She can't get around by herself, and he has to help her in and out of her wheelchair.

We told him he really needs to get some in-home help (his health isn't that great either), and he absolutely needs to talk to a social worker to help deal with all the insurance stuff.

I'm hoping that the strong Mormon faith that my parents have is helping them handle this. My poor mom was pretty much shattered by the end of our visit.

I'm sure it is. I have my many criticisms and lack of faith around religion, but I'm not going to lie how strong my Mom has been since watching her husband die right in front of her has me occasionally a little jealous I don't have much.

The faith and the strong community will be a big help to them. For better and for worse, the LDS church has done a good job at recreating the stereotypical small-town social dynamic in a big metropolitan setting.

Woman who lives across the road from me died sometime Monday night. Today would have been her 99th birthday. Sad, but not tragic...

But because the Jewish funeral homes are closed until sundown tonight (Sukkot), her body's in the living room until tonight. A bit spooky...

I have to share this story that my daughter told me this morning. Her grandfather, my ex Father-in-law, is in the town for a while from Florida, staying with my Ex. The reason? His wife, my Ex Step-Mother-In-Law, left him after 40 years of marriage, to run off to North Carolina to be with her high school boyfriend that she had been emailing with secretly for a while.

And as if that isn't crazy enough, she left him while he was taking a nap! (He's 80 years old, and his health isn't that great). She had a suitcase packed, and waited until he laid down for a nap, and split, with no note or letter or anything. He woke up to an empty house, with no explanation. He ended up calling the police to file a missing person's report, and after a few days the cops let him know that they had tracked her down.

Bonkers...
