Still processing, but this might be a top 5 celebrity death for me in terms of feeling a personal loss. Maybe going all the way back to John Candy for one that felt this gutting.

You see…this was kind of him just being mean. I never thought this one was as funny as a lot of people did but I do think generally he was hilarious.

A 35-minute supercut of what basically got Norm fired. The whole thing kills (no pun intended) especially in hindsight. Guess OJ got the last laugh though.

I don't think a single news story could ever hold the nations attention for that long again what with social media and the 24 hour news channels. People would lose interest as it dragged on, but the OJ story was in the news every day for 16 months between the day OJ murdered Nicole and the day OJ was acquitted despite murdering her.

When he was the guest, he was hilarious. But he totally shit on Smith when she was the featured guest. That was my point. They say he always punched up, which was almost always true, but that one was not one of those instances. She was in no way qualified to take those barbs and elevate things.

I'd love to hear her take on that segment. She seemed to enjoy a lot of the jokes, but it did derail her segment and didn't paint a good image on the movie. OTOH, Carrot Top starred in the movie, so maybe negative jokes were better than a straight pitch of the movie. Either way, I came out of that respecting Smith for her ability to keep her cool if she was offended or pissed off, and even more respect if she was able to find it funny.

While I love Norm, he definitely lacked something that makes us human. Podcast interviews with him were interesting, as he just lacks... something. I can't find the right word, but it's like he is disassociated and lacks emotions, just waiting to tell a joke or turn a phrase, even in longform discussions about his life. Trying to remember, maybe it was on Maron's podcast, but he talked a lot about his gambling problems, family and friends, I came away thinking he just isn't connected to reality like most people.

I don't think he lacked the human side (Letterman finale), he was just completely committed to not caring if 90% or 30% or just three people got the joke and never bonding with the audience is necessary for that type of delivery.

As far as mean versus funny, a feature film starring Carrot Top is and always was DOA. The same type of jokes about Melrose Place or something she took serious would have been a totally different scene, but comedy about comedy seems like fair play. If anything, her playing along allowed her to kind of rise above the bomb she had to know she was a part of.

I suppose it's a little unfair that this will also be the clip that gets brought up the most when Courtney Thorne-Smith dies instead of, you know, nothing.

Two biggest shocks in this thread: Bob Dole and Better Than Ezra have Twitter accounts! I could of sworn Dole died 5 years ago , and I would have bet Better than Ezra ended in 1996. Pretty sure I saw them play at a music festival on campus my Freshman or Sophomore year of college. I think they were on before Cypress Hill.
