Good point, need to make sure his spikes fit. Bought new spikes for xcountry, but I don’t think he ever wore them.

Check the length on those spikes. XC spikes are often longer than they'll allow on a track.

My son forgot his lunch yesterday. He said a bunch of kids gave him stuff because he shares his lunch with them. Gave me warm fuzzys. Can get a long way in life like that.

My daughter is playing travel basketball this year after skipping last year due to me being overly cautious with COVID. Yesterday she played our rival town and for context, they always crush her team. Played them to open the season and lost 26-4, lost in a preseason tourney 32-8, and last year lost 43-0. Her team has never scored more than 16 points in a game, so it was a huge shock to go into the fourth quarter up by 7. They held on to send it into overtime. They were tied 31-31 with 12 seconds on the clock. So happy that another parent thought to take video of the end of the game (just wished she shot in landscape). Inbound pass goes to my daughter.

Do we have a rough week in parenting thread? In the span of a week my oldest has had one acquantaince (classmate of friends of his at Embry-Riddle, and guy he's met before) get arrested prior to attempting to enact a Columbine at ERAU, and a friend that was in youth group with him die in a motorcycle accident.

This basketball is way too intense. I'm assistant coaching, and tonight's game got way out of control. Refs were horrible, and our super mild mannered head coach lost it at the ref, got a technical and one of the two refs decided he was going to call everything on us. He even announced it. "You want me to call traveling? I'm calling all of them on you." Opponent was a really weak team, yet we were down 9-2 midway through the 3rd quarter. Didn't help that the home team had 15 or so 7th grade boys screaming and taunting our girls. And let me tell you, hormonal 13 yo girls cannot handle the taunting. Refs actually stopped the game to scream at the boys and threatened to kick them out. One of our girls walked off the court during a foul shot to yell at them. Our girls somehow came back to tie it at 15. Lauren had a steal, dribbled the length of the court and with 2 seconds left.... missed a layup.

It's so loud in a small gym, and the 4th Q and OT, everyone from the next game filed in and the gym was full and loud. Emotions run so much higher than soccer. I never played basketball, and when I assisted 2 years ago, it was so much slower, quieter and we got blown out, so it was never pressure filled. With 30 seconds left in OT, the other assistant got a technical for yelling at the ref. Up 2 with 6 seconds left, they inbounded from under the hoop. Girl goes up at the buzzer, we foul. I felt so bad for the girl shooting. They cleared the court, the gym was so loud, everyone screaming and she needed to hit two to tie. And these girls are lucky to shoot 20% from the line. She missed the first. It's just brutal.

I conducted a phone interview with a prospect today and the almost 16 year old overheard pet of it and spent the duration of the trip to track practice clowning on me for saying “you know” too much, I guess while doing a little extemporaneous speaking on my experience with the company. Devastating.

My daughter had a 1on1 Zoom call with her soccer coach last week to discuss her player evaluation and SMART goals for next year. Good news, the coach offered her an early decision spot to stay on the team before the tryout season, so we don't have to go through the craziness this year. She asked the coach about her chances of moving up to the A team, who play in what used to the US Soccer Development Academy (now called Girl's Academy). I'm worried about that, as the travel is insane. Only one other team in state, one team is a 13-hour round trip with several teams over 10 hours. All that driving for a one-hour league game is nuts. Anyways, I was proud that she asked if she had a chance to move up. Coach said he thinks she needs another year on her current team to build confidence. She is on a mission to prove she is ready.

Crazy sports weekend for my daughter, as her basketball team has two weeks to make up all the missed games due to COVID and snow cancellations. On Saturday she had a soccer clinic in the morning with a coach who runs them into the ground. The session after hers was girls 2 years older, and he had my daughter stay late to play against them in 1v1 drills. In the afternoon she had a soccer scrimmage immediately followed by a basketball game. 20 minutes between the games and a 30-minute drive, so we raced out, skipping the post-game talk and arrived at basketball 2 minutes after tipoff. We tried to get her to skip the clinic or basketball game, but she insisted she could do it. I felt like Deion's helicopter pilot.

At her soccer game, she came out of the gates on the opening kickoff more aggressive defensively than I've ever seen her play. She scored the opener 4 minutes in and completed a hat trick around the 30th minute. Still lost the game, but they were playing a GA team and were just outclassed. Basketball coach kept her in the entire game. She was clearly exhausted but didn't slow down. Won that game, she scored half her teams' points and had 10 steals. Fortunately, the first of her two basketball games on Sunday was cancelled for snow so she could sleep in. Either soccer practice or a basketball game every day this week with 2 games on Saturday. I'm happy because I wouldn't leave the house otherwise.

That's the goal of her soccer program. The A-team girls all sign college commitments and a few of the B-team girls, too. Not sure if signing a commitment means a scholarship, but it will help get you in. She played at a tournament in the fall with 66 colleges advertising they were sending scouts. Their league is focused on college scouting and national team recruitment. At the U-16 level, they create regional all-star teams to compete against other regions for US Soccer to scout. I don't know if she is good enough to make the next level, but I'm proud that she is pushing for it. I was going to ask her coach if she could go to a few practices with the A-team to see how hard she needs to work, but she said she wanted to ask, as it'd mean more coming from her than a parent. They are trying to schedule an A vs. B scrimmage, I really want to see how much better the A-team is. Several of the B team parents think the B team is better, but I highly doubt it. They know what they are doing and are going to move the best kids up. That said, they've brought in a few C-team players when we were short on subs, and they are substantially better than two of the girls on the B team. No idea how these two weren't moved down.

We coached, conservatively, 12 or 13 girls that if (and this a massive IF) they wanted to push things, could've played in college, 2 or 3 of them had D1 talent. They just didn't really want it that bad.

The desire from the player is a massive aspect.

/obvious point that gets overlooked a LOT by parents and many coaches.

ETA - Not that you guys are going to remember, but the bulk of the WJHS team that won states (5 starters, 3 players off the bench with lots of minutes) was comprised of our travel squad.

Thanks for saying that, but I'm not sure she has the desire it takes to get to D1, and if she doesn't, the journey won't be a good experience or worth it. She doesn't do any running or training on her own in the off-season. Last summer, we kept telling her she was playing in a higher flight and moving to 11v11 with a much bigger field. She plays outside mid or in her current team it's a 4-3-3, but the outside forwards have a big defensive responsibility and run a lot more than any other position on the field. She didn't listen, would occasionally run, or say she was running, to show us she was working. She was in for a shock her first few games and needed to get subbed off, and had a hard time getting into the attack when defending deep. During COVID, her former team signed them all up for an app called Techne that has 100s of workouts, both ball skills and strength/endurance. The app charted the number of minutes every player trained each week. She did the bare minimum the coach required, and only with 2 teammates on a Zoom call while they did the workouts. She still has access, but hasn't used it once.

I know the desire has to come from her, so we don't push her. We make suggestions of what she could be doing. My wife made a secret ultimatum with me that if my daughter doesn't show she is willing to put in the effort on her own, we aren't going to continue paying for this program and driving that much to get her to practices and games.

Yeah, that's all good perspective to keep in all of this. One thing (and another "obvious point alert") that I used to stress with my players and their parents is that there are a shitload of D3 schools out there and that division is getting REALLY competitive. To the point that if your daughter is a good student, and she can have a coach put her thumb on the scales with admin at Tufts, W&L, Williams, Amherst (etc ad nauseum) that's a HUGE bonus. It's like adding a couple of hundred points on your SAT scores at some schools.

My coaching buddy used to talk about playing in college as a goal, but I don't think he was good at explaining it's not just about D1. Coaches get paid and win/lose jobs all the time at the D3 level now. It didn't used to be that way, at all. Coaching soccer was often a second coaching job at a given school at many places. Now, many D3 coaches run ID camps and shit like that. And there are something like 420(!) D3 women's programs out there. Not all playing at that high level, but UAA, NESCAC, Centennial... Some of the best academic schools in the country.

As nonlinear said...lots of ways to keep playing and D3 sports do help you get in (even if you choose to not play/play less than 4 years/etc).

I appreciate all the D3 talk. I really don't care if she decides not to play in college, but want to give the opportunity to if she wants it. I just mentioned D1 because I was talking scholarships, but lower divisions probably offer some tuition breaks too.
