Saw that - a ludicrous display.

One writer figured that the idiot ref forgot to pause his watch when the teams took a second half water break. Apparently this ref was suspended by AFCON a few years ago but was reinstated by FIFA.

He's viewed very highly by FIFA. He reffed two world cup matches in 2018. Belgium-Panama, Japan-Poland.

To give some further context, in the second half there had been 5 subs, two penalties (one via VAR review), a red card, 2 video reviews and a drinks break, and the ref not only doesn't add any additional time but finishes it early.

The forgot to pause watch would make sense if he stopped it at 90 but he stopped it 5 minutes early....and then did not give them time for the water break or time he gave to the 4th official. The fact that the opponents did not come back out when CAF said hey there should be a few more minutes makes this worse (but not perfect).

Bad watch running too fast? Most pro refs I see wear two. There is also usually a scoreboard in the stadium with time running. Figured that may have indicated things were funny..But what about the ARs, 4th official, and VAR..how did they not get in his ear. Too many redundant systems that should have prevented this.

Refs are supposed to use 2 watches. One keeps running time, one they stop during injuries, water breaks, time wasting, long goal celebrations...

The pitch was terrible. The goal scorer nearly fell before scoring. They say the keeper tore his ACL.

Im gonna let one in not turnover possession out of goal. You would have to do that 3 times to assure a result. Guys blow that chance more often than not and defenders might make a play.

Do need to watch some of this tournament though.

The tournament started quite slow with only one of the first 12 games having more than one goal. However, it's picked up more in the second match day with a lot of VAR and controversy. Lack of goal and the finishing in general have been terrible but again, they're playing on terrible pitches. Third matchday is starting today as Group A are playing right now.

That red card against Ghana was weak. Maybe a yellow but that attacker had a right to that ball and went for it not the keeper. They checked VAR but weak

I agree. There's been alot of VAR in this tournament. Here's another one, check out Guinea-Bissau fabulous goal near the end.

It's happened! Comoros are into the last 16 where they meet hosts Cameroon. That would be the mother of all upsets.
After their win against Ghana, they needed 4 additional things to happen.

Sudan to not beat Egypt (check)
Guinea-Bissau to not beat Nigeria (check)
Algeria to not beat Ivory Coast (check)
Equatorial Guinea vs Sierra Leone to not tie (like Raiders - Chargers) (check)

Women's soccer. Philippines vs Taiwan penalty shootout for a spot in 2023 Women's World Cup.

Philippines qualify for a FIFA event of any kind (men, women, youth) for the first time ever. They upset Thailand to get the easier matchup against Taiwan. Crazy shootout to get in. They have 10 Americans on the team!

Could not find better highlights then this, such the status of women's football.

A friend/co-worker from our California office had a daughter who played for the Philippines youth national teams a few years back. My buddy as a wife of Philippine decent. They apparently have run ID camps in the US and have relationships with many of the big club programs. She played in U-16 Asia qualifiers in 2016 (4 starts 2 goals). It was a big commitment as it required a few trips to Asia and most of the summer with that team.

Looks like Taiwan threw that. The two they missed were horrendous.

So my buddy just confirmed that one of the team members is a friend of his daughter, 5 others were from Southern Cal and had been playing high school/club against his daughter. His quote was "Philippines spent big money over the last 10 years to build this pipeline so it is great that it is paying off."

ManU got screwed on a handball call (it wasn't called, even after VAR) on the Middlesbrough goal, but they have no excuses. Ronaldo missed a PK in the first half, Bruno hit the post on a sitter, and they had lots of other opportunities.

Feel bad for the 19 year old kid who missed the last PK.
