Thanks, listened to the first ep and halfway through the second and finding it fascinating. I love stories about how random actions can have enormous societal repercussions. Like one guy in China finding and salvaging a garbage barge full of unsold cassette tapes can bring Western music to China at a time when they were limited to listening to 8 government sanctioned propaganda operas.

I love the idea that the Chinese bands kind of created their own fusion of styles based on the fact that they listened to everything and didn't realize that punk rock wasn't supposed to have metal-type guitar solos.

I am sure I have told this story before but it goes along with the Chinese music discussion.

So in spring 1998 I travelled to China through Ball State. Sort of a goodwill tour to sister universities over there, as well as Japan and South Korea. There was 20 of us in the group. All of us were caucasian except for one. Even in the brief time we spent at each university the students knew who we were. While walking around the campus at Teacher's College in Beijing (five of us, all guys, all white) there was a young man that ran up to us. He started asking us where the n* is. He repeated that four or five times before one of us broke out of our surprise and asked if they meant Rasaun. The young man was like "Yeah, the n*". We were all kind of dumb struck, but then he said he wanted to rap for him. And because rappers are predominately black and use the n-word, that is how he associated Rasaun. The five of us were just taken aback and told him that he shouldn't use that word, but he started spitting out Dr. Dre and Snoop.

Rasaun found it all quite humorous when we told him the story. He said that we were more likely to help the kid rap then he was. Now if they wanted to talk about Michael Jackson or Prince, he would have been your man.

I really liked the Vietnam psy-ops story. Kind of gross and creepy to fuck with people that way, but in the alternative, if you can prevent guerrilla combatants from taking up arms, much better than killing them and having troops killed by them.

The producer/narrator being so young led to some funny moment for me. "If you can believe it, there was a time when computer games came on a cassette?" Umm yeah, can totally believe it. I remember playing them. A couple other moments like that, some about technology that is way to recent (in my mind) to have the producer shocked people lived like that in the distant past.

Interesting, and yet another bit of bizarre symbolism from the MAGA Right. Using the South Vietnam flag as a symbol of White Nationalism is confounding. I get the symbolism of using it as a symbol of anti-Communism, but White Nationalism?

At dinner the other night, we regaled (or "bored") our kids with stories about receptionists and getting piles of pink papers listing the calls you missed while you were out.

Shed a tear for the manufacturers of those spikes that sat on every desk - the ones where you put the pink sheets that were messages you'd answered.

Oh, and smoking rooms. That seemed odd to them (and it seems odd when you think about it. I mean, why not just go outside? I was one of a number of people who'd sit in the smoking room doing work for an hour at a time. Smelled really good...)

Do Cubans have a anti-communist flag? The flag has become a real thing in the Vietnamese community. The South Vietnam one became the flag of the Vietnamese diaspora. And we have to go immediately protest any sign of the real Vietnamese flag, it's an ingrained knee-jerk reaction. You already took our land once, don't come to America and take our land again. A Vietnamese foreign exchange student born in 2000 even knows this. If he brings the Red flag into the Vietnamese diaspora, he's going to get a beating. Which is sad because Vietnamese overseas are divided on political grounds.

I notice this when I go to a local Chinese New Year celebration. There are no flags. They are celebrating Chinese New Year whether you're Chinese from anywhere, mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada or non-Chinese. Go to a local Vietnamese celebration, that yellow flag is plastered everything. It's really off putting. If Sybian were to go to a Vietnamese Food Fair, he wants to go there for the food, not for 100 flags in his face.



I could go on and on about Vietnamese politics. Its a soap opera in itself. It's all for jobs and money. A Vietnamese city Councillor will be doing business with Vietnam and be called a communist. People will vote him and out and replace him with the guy who launched the complaint so he can sit in that seat and do business with Vietnam only to be called out by the next guy who will do the same. And the populace continues to get duped over and over again.

Amazing reporter and talks about Canadian police and court procedure and the media's role in all that. There have been crazy crimes in Calgary over the last decade.

So I used to listen to Mike Pesca's The Gist daily (Slate). He was also a key voice on Slate's Hang Up and Listen. Found him witty and his arguments nuanced. It did not really occur to me that he sort of disappeared. And then this week his podcast (The Gist) magically just started showing up again. I assumed he got busy focused on writing a book or such. Then he returned....Well bit more to the story.

I've typically done Up First, The Lead, and either The Daily or a new-ish Houston one that's not that good. I took a break from those when football started and then have been catching up on Cocaine & Rhinestones and Spitballers since the season ended, but I'm about done with those. The few times recently I've gone back and tried making the previous ones part of my routine again, I find myself wanting something different than those.

Gregg Rosenthal is Anthony's college BFF and an analyst for the NFL Network and their producer and sort of 3rd host is an NFL Network producer, so there is a decent amount of insider NFL talk. They have a segment reading bizarre news stories they make fun of, a segment recommending books and movies that have steered me into some great content. More throw-away humor than anything else.

If you haven't listened to it yet, the 'European Nights' podcast on the Men In Blazers feed (Roger Bennett and Rory Smith, soccer writer for the NYTimes discussing Champions league, Europa League, etc) is really interesting. Lots of backstory about Euro teams and players.

First off, everybody needs a good frient.

Secondly, I wanted to highlight Fly on the Wall, with Dana Carvey and David Spade. While it takes a bit for them to get in the groove, the subject matter being all tied back into the interviewees ties with SNL (cast member, writer, host, etc.) is REALLY in the pocket for me. I'm an SNL nerd, so the behind-the-scenes glimpses really fascinate me.

aaaaahhhh! Nice! I really miss the McElroy brothers doing their initial D&D run. Definitely going to check this out!

I may have mentioned (?) that during the pandemic, a subset of our bubble-families started a D&D group and ran through 2 campaigns and we are on our 3rd but it's on hiatus due to some shitty health issues.

We try to do character voices and I haven't laughed harder then a half-dozen times we've put together some of the funniest improv shit I've heard in-person. My really poorly washed half-ling named Shart kind of brought the house down, I'm proud to say.
