It's perfectly OK to draw your own line and everyone's is allowed to be different when actual laws aren't involved. But is there anyone out there blaming Chris Rock for derailing the show? For taking attention away from Questlove and anyone else the rest of the night? I doubt that's the case with a dead child joke or a breast cancer joke or an ALS joke. That's my signal of where the collective line is drawn.

(Society is terrible so please don't hold me to future collective lines.)

And not having seen "The Ricardos" movie, the scene with JK Simmons as the guy who played Fred Mertz being serious made me laugh.

If I live long enough, will I see a drama about the "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" featuring an intense monologue by the actor playing Ted Knight?

Johnnie wrote: Mon Mar 28, 2022 10:26 am This morning I put myself in Will Smith's shoes and tried to feel empathy.

As I've stated before in another thread, my wife was diagnosed with melanoma that spread to her lymph node. She's been undergoing immunotherapy treatment monthly and her last treatment is in a few weeks (Yay!). She hasn't lost her hair and her shitty side effects have been nausea and fatigue.

If a dude cracked a cancer joke at my wife's expense I'd be furious. Especially if the 'joke' was done in bad taste and with ill intent. But since I'm 1) in the military and 2) not rich, I cannot just walk up to said dude and slap the shit out of him in a room full of witnesses because I would get arrested and go to jail.

It seems like this reaction of his is propped up by a level of privilege I would never have and therefore can be seen as a justified way of defending his wife more than anything.

So, if Rock has bad blood with Will/Jada and did this to be an asshole built in public, he's a shithead, but it's absolutely a bigger shithead move to get violent over it.
Shit, Johnnie, I don't think I knew that about your wife. I hope the treatment works for her.

Was Smith slapping Rock a shithead move, or something you'd like to do couldn't get away with? (Or both?)

Personally, I'd put this whole thing in the category of "no, that's not okay, but it's also not seriously bad enough to spend much time worrying about." And I'd probably say that Rock was the bigger shithead.

yall all seem very casually okay with a crowd member coming out of a crowd and hitting a comic for telling jokes at a time and place where he was paid to tell jokes.

There is NOTHING you can say into a microphone that justifies a fucking crowd member being violent to an entertainer. Literally, Will Smith needs to learn how to take a joke. Its scary that yall think if your feelings get hurt you deserve physical pain. What is wrong with you people?

I saw a funny clip of the former Real World cast member turned Fox pundit happy that someone in Hollywood attacked a Liberal, because it is so hard being a Conservative, constantly attacked in American society. Then she went on about poor Melania and all she endured because the Liberals are horrible mean people. Because nobody every personally attacked Michelle Obama or Hillary. Or Chelsea.

I agree. Joke was in poor taste (if he knew it was a health condition), but I think "being a man" includes acting with integrity and not jumping out of your chair and punching a comedian on stage during an international live televised event. Get in his face and yell at him afterwards, but that's ridiculous. I do think a roast isn't a comparable event, as you damned well know you are getting brutally ripped if you are in attendance. Oscars you can expect some jokes, but not that brutal.

She's doing well and looking forward to no more treatments. The fact that I have Tricare and her medical bills are paid for is so fucking clutch. I wish we had better health care for all in this country

And trust me, I would absolutely love to beat the shit out of some people, but you just can't do it. Violence over something like this is just not called for irrelevant to whether or not it's legal.

So I simply disagree on who the bigger asshole is here.

I don't think that anyone should get assaulted while working. However, if you're at a show and you single out some (presumably not famous) lady specifically because of how she looks and she or her partner takes offense, well, you can't say it wasn't a possibility. It ain't right, but I understand.

Hm. I'm not sure that Rock being a comic paid to tell jokes really excuses anything here. Whatever the rules are about "when is it okay to respond to words with a slap," I don't think there should be an exception for comics on stage.

If this were a Will and Jada Pinkett Smith Celebrity Roast, then I could see that. But otherwise, did the Smiths consent to being the butt of personal jokes by attending the Oscars?

I think the smirk was reflexive. He also looked around to see if they were going to commercial or if security was going to come to his defense.

I think they were both in the wrong: If Rock (or the writers...I read somewhere that it was a joke that came out of the writers room) knew about Jada's condition, and still made the joke, he was way over the line. (and the joke was lame...how many people even remember 'GI Jane'?)

But Smith is 'wronger': Physical assault is wrong, no matter how over the line a joke is. Especially on world-wide live TV. And it was bizarre as hell that an hour later he's on stage, accepting an award saying 'love makes you do crazy things'. Umm...that's pretty classic abuser language.

And...reading the various stories, my mind keeps seeing the name 'Rock' as 'The Rock' instead. Would Smith have slapped The Rock for making the same joke?

Anyone else when the concept of "slap" comes up immediately think about Real World Seattle (Stephen and Irene)?

Also just based on my perception of Dwayne Johnson...I don't see him cracking that joke. Way too Disney a personality. Even when he is going after laughs he stays pretty positive.

Yeah, this is where I'm at. And to add to this, a question... How fucked up is it that he wasn't escorted off the premises, possibly even by law enforcement. But, put aside arresting him, they just shrugged their shoulders and said "fuck it, he DID make an off-color joke, so Smith is cool to stay."

Like, WTF is that?? I think this thread got down a "was this a good/bad or offensive or not joke" and kind of missed a more fundamental issue from last night.

Yes. That is absolutely a possibility.

Ricky Gervais has said some shit that, according to the new assault a comic doctrine I didn't know got put into law, would've had him shot in the face multiple times at the GG.

To hear stand-up comedians re-tell the story, I would've thought Will Smith repeatedly took a Louisville Slugger to Rock's head. I'm not saying Smith should have done that, he definitely should not have. But the outrage over this is laughable. I guess that is their job!

I'm 5-7 and 150. Just saying that if "4 inches taller and 50 pounds heavier" is the threshold where violence is unacceptable no matter the provocation, that would protect me from a good chunk of the population.

I'm not familiar with Segura's act so I can't tell if he's being serious or if he's doing some sort of satirical take on an internet tough guy.

Chris rock isn't funny anymore. But he did take that slap pretty good and kept the show going. Solid work. The abuser comparison is dumb snowflake stuff but will Smith needs to calm down. Oscars are just trying to be something that it's not. Just present the awards, sing the songs and get out of there.

Rock could have done a documentary joke.

" you are all probably wondering why they got me for this category.. You know what, most of you think I don't watch documentaries. Oh no. No, no , no. I do. I watch alot. i even made one!

In fact! I watched a documentary on Marijuana last night…
…that’s probably how I’ll watch all documentaries from now on."

And Kevin Costner? What was that long ass shit?

I don't want to get all hot-takey like apparently Tom Segura has, but it seems to me perhaps Will Smith was really smacking the crap out of all the men who've had relations with his wife while they've been married.

He can talk all he wants about how they have an open marriage, but my guess is when she reacted poorly to the GI-Jane / Demi Moore-look joke, he was made to realize he had zero power in that relationship.

Dude's a mess.
