Me too, Ryan... That's another thing in this thread I wasn't really sure about. And in general... I heard Rich Eisen on this topic and he was calling it a horrible joke and some of his crew were like, why is comparing Jada to a jacked (and beautiful) Demi Moore such a huge insult. They, like I think the vast majority of the world, had no idea Jada has alopecia.

Assuming Rock knew this "because he had long standing beef" with the Smiths, as was mentioned here and elsewhere, is making a number of pretty huge leaps.

Also, found this interesting from Kareem: https://kareem.substack.com/p/will-smit ... O54pTM&s=r

Right I was trying to make that point earlier somewhere.

And again, I don't blame anyone who assumes bad intentions because that's what the segment is for and that's what Chris Rock sometimes does but if he later that night walks into a Children's Hospital and sees a black girl with no hair and goes "Wow look at you! They should put you in the Dora Milaje!" that's a sweet thing to say.

See avatar, per usual.

We’ve all seen roasts where after the last needling, the comedian pivots and speaks with genuine affection towards the target. Frankly, it’s not out of question that Rock wouldn’t have done something similar about how GI Jane was a symbol of strength and beauty for women a generation ago, “Looking forward with you, Jada…”

Instead, he got smacked into next week LOL

The delivery implied it was a hair joke and not a nod to a strong woman, no? Like written down, you can argue its a toss-up. Video says its a bald joke.

And I don't particularly care if Rock did or didn't know the reasoning. The reason was out there and the onus is on him to know if he's bringing it up.

It was a hair joke, but once he referenced GI Jane, images of a self-assured, strong & sexy woman are conjured.

Other than a few, like Tiffany Haddish, I haven't seen a lot of comedians defending Will on this. I, too, saw that Pat-Tom back and forth and I think that sentiment captures where the dozens of interviews and quote I've seen.

Dana Carvey and David Spade have a podcast and they had an interesting exchange... they are both friends with Rock, and they all share childhoods riddled with being bullied because they were diminutive. Both mentioned being triggered by the whole thing.

Another thing that was pointed out, and maybe it's obvious but I hadn't picked up on it... Chris' hands are clasped behind his back when Smith smacks him. Characterize that how you wish... I had feelings.

I have what will likely be an undoubtedly unpopular opinion with certain segments. These stand up comedians often get their material from histories of pain or something that lets comedy be the outlet, and bullying is probably a fairly common thread. So the people who were sick of getting beat up by the pulling guard all week only to go out on the weekend and watch the quarterback get all the girls now are afraid that the quarterback is now going to come attack them on stage. Tortured artists still with the bully in the back of their minds. Right or wrong, it happens. And when it happens, they show it on TV a lot.

The joke was definitely in poor taste. Plus, Chris Rock isn't an "insult" comic. If Triumph was up there riffing, would the same have happened? Probably not, even though that would have been hilarious but also would have gotten PETA in an uproar instead of stand ups.

I guess basically I'm saying everyone needs to punch Jim Gaffigan.

Cracking a single joke in a public forum is not bullying.

A pathological requirement to every standup he's ever done dumping on bald women in his act city after city and establishing a gross trend of making it a point would be bullying.

So a one-off joke should be treated as a one-off, a one-off response should be treated as a slippery slope and a slap is "violence". Gotcha!

I think we could have a normal debate on how this can constitute bullying in either direction? My guess is that when Carvey and Spade were bullied in high school, its not because the eventual bully was sitting with his girlfriend and they walked up unprovoked to talk shit about her appearance.
