I agree, but I love her voice. On Heart Shaped Box, it lent it an eeriness, but Closer just didn't fit.Shirley wrote:
She's very impressive and I love her choice of covers, but I couldn't help but think her voice is just too sunny for Closer and Heart-Shaped Box. Both covers were missing the angst and pain of the originals.

Already listened to Isbell. If you're a fan, it's great.

I didn't know that Todd Snider officiated Isbell's wedding to Amanda Shires. That should also help bring him closer to AB's good graces.govmentchedda wrote:Already listened to Isbell. If you're a fan, it's great.

Re: Getting the spins
I liked that Solo album from him quite a lot. The 400 unit stuff I didn't care for as much.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.
Re: Getting the spins
Well, it's technically all 400 Unit stuff. They did a lot of the backing on this album too even if it's not labelled as a Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit album. Kind of like how some Springsteen albums are "Bruce Springsteen" and some are "Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band". It's not like Steven Van Zandt isn't playing guitar on most of that shizz. The biggest difference between the albums is he did the latest one sober.AB_skin_test wrote:I liked that Solo album from him quite a lot. The 400 unit stuff I didn't care for as much.

Yeah, re: the 400 Unit stuff, if I recall correctly, he said at the concert here a few weeks ago that the band was the 400 Unit. Also, he tweeted a concert date recently as a Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit show.

Yup, definitely gonna be in my top ten albums of 2014, unless this is a crazy good year for music. Have you checked out his album he did with the guy from Album Leaf? It was one of my favourite albums last year. it's called Sun Kil Moon & The Album Leaf - Perils from the Sea.brian wrote:I highly recommend Sun Kil Moon's latest (Benji). Just absolutely gobsmackingly incredible. One of those albums I can't be doing anything while listening to because I just want to get lost in it. I won't even play it in my car because I'm worried I'll just drift off and stop paying attention to the road.

The new Hold Steady is out and its really good. The addition of another guitar player really opens up the sound.

Well, that album didn't sound like the stuff they played when I saw him live. I am willing to admit it may have been the venue as much as anything that didn't sell his music well enough for me.brian wrote:Well, it's technically all 400 Unit stuff. Yeah, I want to listen to it badly, i have it downloaded but it won't load to my phone for some reason and i spend very little time at home so i haven't had a chance. Is there a way to transfer music to your phone without plugging it directly into your computer? my computer won't recognize my phone when i plug it in.DaveInSeattle wrote:The new Hold Steady is out and its really good. Been a really good start to the year. Real Estate is awesome, St. Vincent, Cymbals, Warpaint. Still have no idea what I think of Future Islands beyond the catchy as hell "Seasons".TheHumanComa wrote:The new The War on Drugs album is amazing.

Re: Getting the spins
The new one by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, "Give the People What They Want", is great. Old school funk/soul.
Re: Getting the spins
That new Jack White song is pretty sweet. This is the kind of stuff I hoped he'd be doing when he went solo. The Raconteurs and Dead Weather stuff is OK, but this is much cooler IMO.

Their sound is pretty derivative of Sufjan Stevens and The National, and the songs vary as much as Badly Drawn Boy's The Bewilderbeast, but I think I like the most recent San Fermin album.

Fantastic and fun album.
Fantastic and fun album.

The new album from The Ghost of A Saber Toothed Tiger is quite good.
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Milk Carton Kids. Perhaps too acoustic for this crowd, but fantastic.

Wow, that's a nice Simon and Garfunkle impersonation. And I don't mean that as an insult.
Totally Kafkaesque

Any fans of Wire should check out this bit of insanity - more than two dozen guitarists playing the classic "Pink Flag" along with the band.

Enjoying the new Conor Oberst. For hip hop fans, the new releases by People Under The Stairs and Atmosphere are pretty good as well.

Re: Getting the spins
Ever wonder what an artist makes from streaming stuff? I think we had a link to grantland on the same topic once, but here it is straight from an artist:
http://www.digitalmusicnews.com/permali ... statements" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
2000+ plays got 60 cents from Spotify. Granted, this guy isn't exactly Katy Perry in terms of play count but still....that percentage per play is pretty bad.
So I just looked at my itunes, and the most played song is Robert Earl Keen's Five Pound Bass (Which is werid because that's not in my top 20 of my favorite songs by him) played 194 times. I paid $10 for the album with 10 songs on it, so I paid a dollar for that song, so that's .07 cents per play. Which is a lot more than this dude is getting.

Yup. But I bet it makes plenty of very ethical and socially conscious people feel good because they're paying someone a tiny bit rather than just stealing like in the Napster days. Still fucks the actual artists.

All the more reason to attend shows, buy Tshirts and posters, etc. Artists get a much bigger cut of that, and it's a great time!mister d wrote:Yup. I still have no idea what I think of the movie. I either liked it less because I'm a big fan or I only tolerated it because I'm a big fan.
