Re: 2021-22 NHL season
Rangers are a drastically different team now after the deadline, to the point where we're going to have to look at them before/after in terms of possession and stuff because the bottom six were getting caved in so frequently. They were running out 2-4 AHL level forwards most nights and instantly upgraded with two more middle sixers and a top-level 4th liner. I've been extremely unhappy with most everything Drury has done, but his deadline was borderline perfect.

Okay, this is interesting. Thanks for the input, d. How much do you like this team? Good enough to win a series or two this spring?
Re: 2021-22 NHL season
Enough to hurt you when they finally lose?

Re: 2021-22 NHL season
Pittsburgh, then Carolina, then Florida or Tampa Bay. That's a gauntlet to run.

Re: 2021-22 NHL season
Yeah, the East is stacked. I really like Pittsburgh, but not enough to think they can get past all of those other teams. I think they can beat anybody, but not everybody, if that makes sense. They would have to be perfect.
Note: Crosby will average a point per game again this season. That's 17 straight seasons. Amazing.
Re: 2021-22 NHL season
I think “we” could get through Pittsburgh on skill and Carolina on karma and then it’s just 8 wins for this years best goalie to steal. I don’t think it happens but this should be a team better teams don’t want to play.

Is there, like, a 'new kid at school/detention center' energy here? A lot of fights and tests of strength?
I'm watching Oilers/Blues. Mike Smith in goal. Kassian and Archibald back in the line-up. Backup plan: boxing on YouTube and bourbon.
Hyman scores early. I heart that guy.

Just a gag about the 31st team meeting the 32nd team yeah. There’s no animus as all so far as I’m aware.bapo! wrote: ↑Fri Apr 01, 2022 8:16 pmIs there, like, a 'new kid at school/detention center' energy here? A lot of fights and tests of strength?

Such a sad day.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.

At this point give the guy 11 more games to get to 1000 at least. C’mon.

Their season is lost, and they don't have much defensive depth anyway. This is a dumb, pointless move.

Wow. Florida was down 6-2 to New Jersey after two periods, and then won the game 7-6.

Pens/Aves. Should be a good night to be a hockey fan, but a bit too much 'skilling it up' for my tastes. Hopefully things turn unnecessarily violent soon.
Bowen Byram back in the line-up for Colorado. I'm going to be nervous anytime anybody is close enough to breathe on him. I really hope he can stay healthy.

Well, the Avs did acquire Kurtis McDermid at the trade deadline. I think his middle name is “unnecessarily violent”.bapo! wrote: ↑Tue Apr 05, 2022 6:31 pm Pens/Aves. Wonderful. Now we just need Brian Boyle to score a lacrosse goal, and then we'll have some fireworks.
I've been watching Colorado more often in recent weeks. Makar is so smooth and fun to watch. I love this Colorado team.
MacKinnon scored a sweet goal as I was typing that.

Re: 2021-22 NHL season
µ Yesterday, Crosby sucker-punched a guy. Today, Malkin crosschecked a guy in the mouth. (And, hilariously, Borowiecki was called for slashing to quasi-'even out' the calls.) Man, hockey is complicated enough -- I don't want to have complicated feelings about my favorite players.
µ Nothing complicated about Trevor Zegras, tho. Is it too early to say that he's one of my five favorite players? I don't think so. I love that kid. (That sentence got me put on a list somewhere.)
µ Mike Smith is 40 years old and injury-prone, and a team can't rely on him with any hope of making a deep playoff run. Having said that, he's still one of my favorite goalies. I love this play to set up McDavid's overtime winner on Tuesday. It's very much a soccer play, playing the puck into space and waiting for a teammate to catch up to it.
µ Nothing complicated about Trevor Zegras, tho. Is it too early to say that he's one of my five favorite players? I don't think so. I love that kid. (That sentence got me put on a list somewhere.)

Re: 2021-22 NHL season
The East playoff race has basically been over for weeks. Caps have 10 to play and need 4 points to lock up the last playoff spot. They have 2 games in hand so could catch the Penguins for the 3rd spot in the Met instead of the 2nd wild card spot.

Edmonton has been on a great run, probably not enough time to catch Calgary.bapo! wrote: ↑Sun Apr 10, 2022 10:50 pm µ Yesterday, Crosby sucker-punched a guy. The issue is that Edmonton (and Toronto) are the best in the league on power plays and 3-on-3, neither of which exist in the playoffs.

Re: 2021-22 NHL season
Filed my taxes today. Finished a couple of books. That calls for a celebration. Beer and hockey? Yes, that's what I was thinking, too.
Pens/Isles and Oilers/Wild on tap for tonight. Owen Power making his debut for le Sabres in Toronto. Auston Matthews is scoreless thru one period -- he's slumping badly.
This is almost a complimentary post. Weird. The Oilers are easier to like when their goalies are playing well. But with these two guys, that could change at any moment. I'll enjoy it for as long as it lasts.degenerasian wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 9:56 am Edmonton has been on a great run, probably not enough time to catch Calgary.

Johnny Gaudreau reached 100 points yesterday. Probably no chance to even get nominated for the Hart but he's had an amazing season.
He has 101 points in 73 games, plays for a 1st place team, and leads the league in plus/minus +56. In fact the entire first line leads the league.

The Athletic wrote:Ryan Hartman flipped off Evander Kane on Tuesday night and came away looking like the good guy.
The Minnesota Wild first-line center got into a tussle with Kane, something of a pariah in hockey right now, and as referees separated the two, Hartman flipped Kane the bird while adding some choice words. The NHL fined Hartman $4,250 for the gesture.
By Wednesday, fans had found Hartman’s Venmo account and money started pouring in to pay his fine. Even Kane’s ex-wife joined in with a $200 donation. Kane’s travails of the past year-plus are too numerous to mention in detail...

This is tremendous.The Athletic wrote:Even Kane’s ex-wife joined in with a $200 donation.
Kane has actually added a lot to the Oilers since his arrival. He's played well and scored a bunch of goals. But just as important, just adding another top forward has allowed Edmonton to spread out the offense a little bit. (Nuge on the third line.) It's been two or three months since he's done anything to annoy me, so I'll just enjoy the good vibes.
Was shocked to read that Kreider scored his 50th goal recently. Matthews has 58. Draisaitl has 54, including 3 last night. Those are some big numbers. Almost Bossy-esque.

So Ovi now ties Teemu for most goals in a season by an old person.

Nashville blew a 4-0 lead in Arizona last night and will have to play Colorado in Round 1. Without Saros that series will probably be a sweep.

Tough business. Getting to two conference finals and losing to the champs is not enough. Then a season where your team starts with a 13 game road trip and suffers injuries all year.

Re: 2021-22 NHL season
Well last time around he won a Stanley Cup, had in his contract a raise guaranteed if he did, but wanted more. Caps said thanks but no thanks. So a coach going into the last season of a contract you have a decision to make (extend or move on).
He will get another job.
