A non-masters/majors golf thread 2022

Post by Reaper »

The other thread said 2014-2021, so does that mean we start a new one? Well, here we go. Everyone's going to need a shower after this.

How do you all get your death notices since I left?

Holy Shit! Phil Mickelson Is Now My Most Hated Athlete
"... They killed [Washington Post reporter and U.S. resident Jamal] Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights," Mickelson continued, in an interview that Shipnuck said took place in November. "They execute people over there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates."

Who's going to watch golf with a 11 hour time difference. We talked about this in the Olympic thread.
Any network that pays for the rights to 12 guys playing with 100 amateurs 11 hours away are morons.

Now if they played all tournaments at night under the lights, that might be interesting.

Over on The Defector, the general consensus amongst the commenters is that Phil has some serious gambling debts that he needs to pay off.

Guys playing today will try to get 2 rounds in.

Play is underway with sunny skies and high winds.
Three guys who came out and had to play 17 immediately, Scheffler, Schauffle, Koepka all in the water.

I don't know if anyone will hit the green!

I don't think they can physically stop them, but they can impose fines and other penalties I guess.

At the end of the day, it's all about whether Augusta changes its invitation criteria to exclude (or accommodate) the guys who play the Saudi tour.

They can certainly change the rules for their membership I suppose but it’s ridiculous because they’ve had no problem with guys going to other one off events.

I think it’s a stupid idea and that the big names are better off on the pga tour but how you gonna tell independent contractors they can’t do something.

IIRC, if you’re a PGA Tour member, you have to get the tour’s permission to play in non-PGA events if there’s a Tour stop that same weekend. So the PGA has always had some say as to where players can play.

It’s true that the PGA Tour has given permission in the past, but generally that is in situations where the Tour’s business interests aren’t really threatened. It’s pretty clear that this situation is different from the traditional circumstance (like a foreign player wanting to play in his home country, I would guess).

I honestly don’t know what the Tour can do. Individual tournaments have criteria for entry and could tweak them. The problem for the Tour is that through the FedEx Cup standings, they have created a very easy way for any established player to meet those criteria without having to play every week. The Players invites the entire top 125, and that is also the same cutoff for the FedEx Cup playoffs and a possible shot at the Tour Championship. And those are the only two needle moving events that the Tour controls. The majors are run by other orgs that have their own criteria, and the Ryder Cup is run by the R&A and various PGA orgs (not the Tour).

At the same time, I’m not sure the players have a ton of leverage, because there’s only so much golf that people are going to care about and it feels like the Saudi league is going to fall on the wrong side of that line. That’s why I want to watch this fight!
