Discussion: Which Sport Do You Pick?

Post by A_B »

So here's the question...you have to pick one sport to watch on TV for the rest of your life at the expense of ALL others. For this experiment, college and professional are considered different sports. So you would have to choose between NCAA and the NFL or the NBA.

Also assume that when you pick a sport, then you are able to watch any game you want...blackout rules don't apply...BUT they don't modify the schedule. So the NFL is still only on 20 weekends a year, etc.

I'll add a poll, but for me it would probably end up being baseball. One - the season is long enough to give a good amount of viewing possibilities. Two - it was the game I loved as a child. Three - While I lean Reds, I am more of a baseball fan than I am of one team. That's not true in the other sports, where I have a decided interest or no interest.

Baseball was a very close second but I think gun to my head, I go NFL. Tough call.

NHL I don't start watching these days until playoffs and NBA can fuck off forever as far as I'm concerned. I was into hockey to a much greater degree in the late 'aughts.

I went with soccer. Wouldn't call it my favorite sport, but the sheer volume of leagues and competitions around the world make for plenty to follow if I had to give up everything else.

I have already narrowed down my viewing to soccer and NFL already. I do miss the NHL, but not having followed since the mid-90s, it's hard to get into it when I don't know any of the players. And as an Isles fan, it looks like I haven't missed anything over the past 20 years. Jebus, how has it been 20 years? Mind boggling. I watched a game last year, and seeing the numbers on the sweaters, my brain thinks Benoit Hogue, Derrick King, Mick Vukota, Uwe Krupp, David Volek... Oh, the memories... Whatever happened to Richard Pilon?

I initially went with soccer as a no brainer, but with the NFL, I have fantasy to consider. That would be hard to give up, plus I really do love following football, but soccer would win out. How could I give up the USMNT and the World Cup? Plus between club and country, soccer has no off season.

If I get a time machine, NBA 1960-1990.

If not, mlb.

(Then again, mlb 1930-1980 would be kinda cool.)

Soccer. It's obviously got the most potential games to watch if you include all leagues. Even if you didn't, I'd take the Premier League, as long as you'd let me watch those teams in other competitions too.

It would be between the NFL and college football. If it was just "football" (i.e. both) would be an absolute no-brainer.

I went NFL. I enjoy baseball, but find that I really don't have time to follow it. I'll read about games the next day or follow along as the 3rd thing I'm doing. If it was a time machine question I'd go back to late 80s-early 90s NHL. But in my present mindset it has to be NFL. I enjoy watching almost any game (some of the Jags games I'd only sort of watch) and I like the fact that you basically know when you can watch, thought the NFL is trying to make that harder with all the added games.
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Soccer due to love of the sport and the nearly year-round aspect. I know this wasn't part of the poll but I think between the lawsuits and rule changes, the NFL will be close to unwatchable in ten years. Cuban may have been wrong about the business end imploding in ten years but the NFL will be as unengaging as his sport within that time.

Interesting point. Since other sports are limited to one league, is soccer? Do I have to choose between Arsenal and USMNT? That would be a tough decision, and I am surprised to see I am leaning Arsenal. I think you'd have to include Champions League and the like into the domestic league, since one team plays in multiple competitions. Don't take away my Cup formerly known as Carling League Cuppity Cup!

Were I to make a break with soccer, it likely would have been along the club/country lines as opposed to college/pro.

I chose NFL. If I had gotten a second choice it would have been NHL. Then, college football. Then, hell, I don't really have a fourth choice.

If you can't count NCAA and NBA as two, you can't vote soccer because of all the different leagues.

I'd probably go NFL just because of the culture phenomenon surrounding it, but do we get to rechoose when that sport dies? Actually, I'd still go NCAA Basketball, just for March Madness. I will never give up those first two full days of basketball.

Can I vote just EPL, Champions League, Euro Cup and World Cup?

That gives me 2 full years and 2 summers off.

Venderpunkts within venderpunkts.

Just this week, I commented to my wife that nothing sports related gets my mood up or down as much as Man United.

Baseball.

Then soccer and tennis I suppose. But there's really no close second for me.

This kind of surprises me, as when I was growing up basketball and football would have been contenders. Those sports seem to me to have been fundamentally wrecked by management; I find my interest mixed with sadness whenever I'm watching them. Baseball's corrupt commissars have certainly damaged the game. But they haven't struck near the core of the sport in my view.

So true. An Arsenal loss puts me in a foul mood for the rest of the day. 2 days if they drop points to a crap team. It's gotten to the point that I expect them to lose to Chelsea and both sides of Manchester. You can probably add Liverpool to the list now. A league win keeps the status quo, unless it is a late winner. A couple of years ago, Jets loss would stick with me until the following game.

This week I made the mistake of looking at Facebook before watching the Arsenal game, and thought Arsenal beat Chelsea. I was ecstatic for about an hour, then rethought the FB post and realized it meant Arsenal were demolished. Not in the Face!!!

So, Degen and I do most of the posting in the NHL thread, but we've said that we both voted for other sports. So, who voted for the NHL? Rass? Diamond? Buff? I'm guessing that Travzilla or Max Webster or Oiler or somebody quit lurking and voted. Or... Maybe it was... (Nahh, couldn't be him...)

NBA - Zero point zero.

Damn did they ruin a beautiful thing. And 'my' team is playing their most watchable ball since hardaway/mullins/richmond 25 years ago.

If we could name a second sport, boxing might outpoll the association with this group.

I'm torn, soccer is my new obsession but baseball is the old love. I wouldn't choose racing or football, because I don't think the quantity is there to make it happen. Yeah, the racing schedule takes a long time, but I find myself lost sometimes on nights that there aren't sports on. Like Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night of this week? I didn't know what to do with myself, as my NBA interest is simply reading about it and I've given up trying to follow the NHL.
