Oh Detroit too. And still almost everyone thinks Detroit is in the Central time zone.
I legitimately know how to say “Detroit is in the Eastern Time Zone” in Japanese
Atlanta is west of Detroit.

True. And yet Atlanta is 240 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Geography is crazy.

Or, conversely, totally appropriate for Florida.
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Number 45 is Paul Konerko with 439.

I’m guessing people living in Florida who work in the Greater Mobile area likely insist on the CST/CDT. Heck, Pensacola is like an hour from there, and it’s like three hours east to get to Tallahassee from Pensacola.

This statement is true in most contexts.

How many states are in multiple time zones would be a good Swampcrash question. I can think of six not sure if there’s more.

There's lots, more than 10. Including one tricky one.

Here you go kids. The entire part of the contiguous 48 that is south of Cape May, NJ and west of Atlanta. Let us celebrate its smallness.

Now let’s do the part that is east of Detroit and north of the tip of West Virginia, i.e., the sports media part.

Let's take that to its satisfying conclusion by pointing out that Dayton and much of metro Cincinnati has the distinction of being south of the West Virginia panhandle, north of the tip of New Jersey, west of Detroit and east of Atlanta. There's probably a deeper truth being told there.

And let's not forget that (1) the southernmost point of Canada is south of parts of California and (2) that southernmost point is called "Middle Island" which should tell you all you need to know about their imperial aspirations.

So US into the round of 8. Canada qualified for the round of 16 with a 3rd place in the pool (tied Cuba). Then they lost to Guatemala. Wonder if the full CMNT is a unique generation and Canada will fall back after this cup.

This tourney is important as it qualifies for the 2024 Olympics (top 2). Top 4 go the the 2023 U-20 WC.

Looks like only 5 of the US squad members are 19.

The date of birth cutoff for the qualifiers is the same as for the final tournament next year. So if they qualify, the 19 year olds will be allowed to play even though they have turned 20. Gotta be honest, I don't love having to beat Costa Rica and then the hosts to get to the Olympics. Looking forward to the automatic spot in 2028.

Also wonder how many U-20s were not released by there teams for this one. There are a handful of players on MLS teams who probably are good candidates (example Moses Nyeman, Vargas) and some transfers to Europe (Kevin Parades, Sanogo, Downs, Che). Shoot, hard to argue Gabriel Slonina is not the best goalie at this age group.

I don't find 3 teams groups that bad. The only time FIFA had was the 2nd round in 1982 and it produced the greatest match ever Brazil vs Italy where Italy had to win.

A 3 team group with a 3-2-1-0 point system (games going to a shootout after 90 minutes) isn't that bad and harder to collude.
It would make the most sense to have to two unseeded teams play first but the hosting committee wants the seeded team to play the opening match that that's a dilemma.

I don't think paired groups would work, you're adding 16 more games to eliminate the same number of teams.
And it would be super confusing. I think the 80 games total is set in stone as the host cities have already been named.
