What Country Would You Move To?

Post by A_B »

I'm not saying I'm pulling up stakes just yet, but my wife and I have certainly discussed things. I don't think I can do Canada but pretty much any other non-fascist yet developed country I could probably be persuaded to look at.
My gall is sufficiently mitigated. Thank you for your concern.

Not sure who would let me and mine in, but Scotland (if they secede), Denmark, Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal.

I’d probably have to up my language skills several levels and learn the Napoleonic code, but France was damn magical.

If Canada were out it would prob ideally be Germany or Spain. UK/Ireland would be in the mix due to language familiarity though.

I loved the CBC!

I can't believe it, but even as a Jew, Germany looks like an appealing place to move. Jewish friend I grew up with moved there 10 years ago and loves living there.

Somebody told me that Portugal was wanting people to come to their country, so that would be cool. But otherwise, Germany works too. I've already lived there and it was easy going.

We are definitely considering it. I have dual citizenship with Canada. Currently trying to get my certification so I can get a Canadian passport. Would consider the UK as well. I’m hoping a passport from a commonwealth country could smooth that process.

I feel like I looked into this about five years ago, and I came up with Gibraltar then. Can't remember all the reasons why it seemed the most viable, but it did. Narrowly beating out Austria because of the language barrier and the weather.

Canada, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Germany, but not in that particular order. New Zealand is my first choice by a long stretch but the Mrs. isn’t as keen to move halfway around the world just yet.

Obviously, I'd go back to Australia in a heartbeat. My GF was born in Germany, and we have talked about her applying to get dual-citizenship.

But we have to worry about her daughter Kelsey, and the care and support network that is set up and working (currently! could change at any moment!) for her makes trying to move her a non-starter. We were talking just a couple of days ago about what hoops we'd have to jump through to get her moved to another state when we retire, and that alone is a daunting challenge.

My wife is part way through the process of getting her Irish citizenship (grandparents were citizens). She originally started it because she thought it would be neat but I've been pushing it to have in our back pocket just in case...

Her family owns land, some of which by birthright she could have had a piece of had her father, the first son of the first son, not pretty much given it away decades ago.

Wife and I have talked about New Zealand, but we've never been. Probably too cold for her. So more likely Australia (also never been), Spain, or Portugal.

I think I've mentioned this before, but a buddy of mine owns a couple restaurants in Santa Ponça, on Mallorca (off the eastern coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea). If the shit were to hit the fan, that's where we'd go.

Slovenian cuisine is a mixture of Central European cuisine (especially Austrian and Hungarian), Mediterranean cuisine and Balkan cuisine. Historically, Slovenian cuisine was divided into town, farmhouse, cottage, castle, parsonage and monastic cuisines. Due to the variety of Slovenian cultural and natural landscapes, there are more than 40 distinct regional cuisines.

Each year since 2000, the Roasted Potato Festival has been organized by the Society for the Recognition of Roasted Potatoes as a Distinct Dish, attracting thousands of visitors. Roasted potatoes, which have been traditionally served in most Slovenian families only on Sundays—preceded by a meat-based soup, such as beef or chicken soup—have been depicted on a special edition of post marks by the Post of Slovenia on 23 November 2012.[271] The best known sausage is kranjska klobasa. Slovenia is also the home of the worlds oldest vine, which is 400 years old.

Slovenia has been awarded the European Region of Gastronomy title for the year 2021.

Today I received in the mail my official certificate of Canadian citizenship! Pretty stoked about it. I needed this document before I can apply for a Canadian passport, which should now go smoothly. My understanding is that the Canadian passport would help my case a lot if I want to launch an extended stay in Canada, UK, or other British commonwealth country. (Which I might want to do if a certain asshole gets back in office in a couple years).

I applied for this certificate on the first of September, 2021, and stupidly didn’t keep copies of my application. Then, to my knowledge, I never received an email confirmation of receipt of the application, and I got no confirmation when I contacted them. So I was afraid it was lost down a rathole, and I figured I’d have to start from scratch all over again. Thus, my excitement to receive the certificate in the mail today!

Does that allow your wife to flee the country with you, or do you just start a new life?
