This fucking disturbs me. Congress people who want their religion to rule all of us, so they declare the Constitution and Founding Fathers always intended it. No concept of the actual words, the Establishment Clause, Thomas Jefferson's 1802 Letter to The Danbury Baptist Association declaring a wall between religion and government, no concept of the 225+ years of judicial history upholding the separation of church and state... Just say that's how it always was until Liberals ruined the country by changing it, and 40% of the population will agree. Really doesn't help that the Supreme Court is completely ignoring all of the precedence and allowing a football coach to lead a prayer before a game and overturning a Maine law prohibiting tax dollars from going to religious schools. When Muslim schools try to take advantage and a State discriminates, the Court will no longer protect non-Christian religious institutions and allow discrimination. We really could be on the cusp of a collapse of our entire system.

I read a great book on the history of the Religious Right, and I was shocked how little the arguments have changed, and it actually goes back before the Constitution. It actually made me feel a lot better, because they built up stronger movements several times throughout history, and always lost steam. This week, I think it all changed. I'll try to remember the name of the book.

In my mind, it's not weird that our founders may have been mostly Christian despite being pretty brilliant law writers. I mean that was like 80 years pre-Darwin. Imagine like 160-70 years after OTOOS, and then a fuckload more mind-blowing scientific discoveries that kept making their deity smaller and smaller...our government somehow managed to become infinitely less secular?

Over Halloween in the new neighborhood this year, one of the houses gave out certificates for a free Frosty. We went to redeem just recently over winter break and found these were also in the envelope with the coupon. Ugh. Not sure how to figure out who to avoid on my block.

So I’m Catholic. Semi-practicing, but I do follow a lot of the rituals. Like the Lenten sacrifice and fasting. No meat on Fridays between Ash Wednesday and Easter. I try going vegan on Fridays, but I at very least go no-kill.

It makes me chuckle, though, every 6 to 7 years like this year when St. Patrick’s falls on Friday, and all the bishops are like “eh, go ahead with the corned beef and cabbage. One day’s not going to hurt.”

I have a buddy that isn't religious but follows the Greek Orthodox Lent menu every year just for the health benefits. As it turns out, eating a lot of fish is a good thing.
