I agree on NY style pizza being the best. We have a place in our town that advertises itself as New Haven-style, and it’s also great. So, I’d rank it this way:
1. NY style
2. New Haven style
3 - 1,000 tie. Almost every other local style
1,001 - vomit and bile style
1,002 - St. Louis style

Connecticut : Boston :: New Jersey : Philadelphia

Both states only matter by virtue of what other city they’re really close to.

Not sure if I struck out on NJ bagel places. I used to go to Hot Bagels Abroad in Clifton. #4 was Hot Bagels Abroad in Montclair. Menus seem different, but they have a similar logo. Curious if it's a chain, they own several, or what. Great bagels, even better hot sandwiches on the lunch menu.

Very nice! Looks like there's one near our hotel this weekend for the Stadium Series game.
Chilly run this morning to the bagel shop. Very good bagel. Went everything with plain cream cheese. Not mind-blowing, but way better than I have had in a long time.

And I think you’ve inspired me. I saw a brand new place (in Hillside) a month or two ago and just double-checked the distance and it’s only 3 miles one-way. Their bagels photograph well at least.

Bagels were a little bigger and less crunchy than they looked but good. Jalapeño cream cheese could have been hotter, but I guess that’s what happens when you use fresh peppers. Place was brand new, and very clean, and adorable overall. Boars Head deli meats, nice list of sandwiches.

Ran past a Brazilian coffee house (which seemed open but Google maps says is temporarily closed) and a very busy Uruguayan bakery/pizzeria, too.

Didn’t feel proselytized.

Seemed like it was a mom, dad, son and grandma running the front of the house at least.

Have come down a point or two on the bagels because I remembered what they reminded me of: stop and shop bagels. I think it wad the corn meal on the bottom.

I first saw them at the high school in the town I recently described as the Duke University of Union County, NJ.

Big, plastic, weather-proof, plastered to a fence outside of the stadium photos of members of sports teams of the school. Seniors? I’ve seen them elsewhere since, including at the track that prompted my NJ mascot post (hey Syb!). The kind of thing the district (or parent boosters) in my town can’t afford.

The HS in the town where I’m sure some NYR fan on our forum lives has had them for probably as long as Duke, NJ. But the ones I saw this morning on my run were another level. Because the ones at Syb’s kid’s school were barely in focus, and from the acne clearly untouched. But these? These were done by pros.

They were another level. Some upper torso shots. Some full body. Some full body action. All with the same background which means they were greenscreened.

And the sports! Fencing! Field hockey or lax or something with a netty stick. Cheer/dance.

And the last set, the posters gently swaying in the spring wind that set the bar for suburbanized excess, were for the Ultimate Frisbee team. Smiling Ultimate Frisbee players. Who do they play??!?

And I’m upset we just missed the charity outing for the HS golf team.

Look at this guy getting upset when a community prioritizes student-athletes over tit-forward realtors. Makes you wonder why he’s even passing through my town if a focus on “unimportant” sports offends him.

I am so tempted to take a look at the signs at my kid's school now. I pick him up every day at the track, but never get out of the car, so I haven't seen them. My daughter practiced at Morris Catholic last year, and their player signs were enormous and clearly paid top dollar for the Glamour Shots quality pics.

ETA: And calling Westfield the Duke of University of Union County is so perfect.

My stereotype of Westfield was that its where new money native New Jersians flock to. And that there have to be a ton of contractors who actually live there tearing down and building to the absolute limits of how large a house can be on a lot. Is that wrong?

Our town's summer farmer's market kicks off today (every Thursday through the fall) and our friends will be back with their taco stand and they make the best fucking tacos in the state and anyone in the general area should come and try them at some point.

But I may just open a bagel shop next to the chain that is open at 6 am.

In any event, that's got to be a staffing issue. That's insanity. I'm sure something like 60-70 percent of their business is conducted during breakfast hours.

You would think, but the permanent lettering on the door says 8-2 PM. It's a great bagel company I think. That's the brand name, not indicative of their quality because I've gone twice now and haven't been able to get a bagel either time. Last time a gaggle of teenagers were taking forever to order so I walked out. Sure, I could have verified the time before pulling into the parking lot, but it never occurred to me they would open that late.
