Shit. My wife has friends in Punta Gorda. Stay dry, Chedd. This storm sounds like it's going to be a raging motherfucker.

Found out this morning that the in-laws generator is not operational due to some pool construction. Had to move the lines or something and it hasn't been installed yet. So a Cat 4 or 5 storm, two people in their late 60s who have never been through a hurricane before...AND they won't have generator power. FFS why didn't they leave...

There's definitely some survivor's guilt watching this head towards a different landfall. Direct strike of a CAT 5? Charlotte Harbor is geographically similar to Tampa Bay. That mix of the highest wind and storm surge is going to be brutal.

This is a good lesson in how far north Tampa is (though not as far as the Weather Channel seems to think)

It's weird (to me, who has no idea how infrastructure and water work) but the worst-looking ones are like a 3 minute drive from a lot of the ones that aren't underwater at all.HaulCitgo wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 10:21 amThats pretty cool in a voyeuristic kind of way. Radar says eyewall on Sanibel right about now. Maybe just missed to the nw. Same for cape Coral and ft Myers too I guess. Doesn't look so good for port Charlotte. Never been there. Has to be a lot of water getting pushed into that bay

The difference between 0 ft and 10 ft is massive when you are talking about storm surges.

Have you seen the documentary on this place? Can't remember what platform. It's eerie AF.

Living next to Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park a questionable decision. All those houses and all those canals. Elevation 7ft. Bet its nice when youre not getting eaten by gators or washed off the map.

Is Mar-a-Lago in the path of this storm? If there was ever a time for God to gives a sign, this seems like an easy one. It'd be fun to watch Trump blame a hurricane destroying MAL on Biden, the DOJ, the Dems... Maybe he'd blame Biden for not nuking the hurricane.

It's on the wrong side of the state to get absolutely wiped out, but just about all of south florida is getting a massive amount of rain. Jacksonville, all the way up to the NE portion of the state is evacuating flood-prone areas, and they're not in the official path (at this point.)

So have a retired co-worker who moved down there. LOVES IT! Got hooked when he went down there as part of educating seniors on securities scams. He is super active and it fits his life. Like summer camp. Bicycle club for him (50+ miles a day) and then plays a short 9.Pruitt3 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 12:24 pm"Some Kind of Heaven" was the title.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 12:18 pmHave you seen the documentary on this place? My inlaws have rented for a few weeks there and liked the music acts that were available every night. Basically groups they knew growing up but have personnel replaced like the Ship of Theseus
The other thing I like is they have a pretty stable USL team. Which in my head is hey come work at the villages and keep your semi professional soccer dream alive.

Correction: It's swinging further north than the path I saw earlier, putting JAX more firmly in the path on that side of the state, and probably not having as big an impact on MAL.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 1:23 pm It's on the wrong side of the state to get absolutely wiped out, but just about all of south florida is getting a massive amount of rain. Good luck, Chedda.
My family has properties on Anna Maria that my grandfather bought back in the 60s. That's a pretty low island, so even the 5-10 foot storm surge they're predicting could be trouble.

And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

My parents sold off their AMI places about 5 years ago. I love that island. It definitely seems to have gotten more susceptible to floods than it used to.Steve of phpBB wrote: ↑Wed Sep 28, 2022 2:31 pm Good luck, Chedda.

Power just went out for the first extended period. We've had some flickers throughout the day, but no extended outage.

So far my in laws have been fine. Their county looks like it's now in a Trop Storm warning. They haven't lost power, and my FIL was going to go take down his window covers, but I think my wife convinced him to just give it a bit more time. They'll be getting rain and wind but may miss the worst part of it since it made landfall lower down the coast. Do have a friend in Napes but he evacuated earlier this week in a private jet.
