I know Polk County announced they would be performing outstanding warrant checks on those entering shelters in previous hurricanes. Florida really is a shit hole.

Back home. Power just came back on. No damage, save for some downed limbs. The house next door to my in-laws, where we were last night, had a tree fall on it. Big oak tree, at least 40 feet tall. It uprooted a patch of grass around the roots that was about 10 feet tall when standing on end. I didn't see any major roof damage, but the tree was still resting on it.

Really appreciate all the concern all week. It was definitely a stressful few days. Really feel bad for Ft. Myers area. Definitely have some survivor's guilt.

That's definitely a thing. We felt in both Harvey and last year's ice storm. We've been tremendously blessed by something!

Right? When I was in high school my mom asked me to cut some of the dead/dying palm fronds from a few of the palm trees in their yard. Of course, these trees were 20-25 feet tall so I had to use a pole saw. I lost control of it (it was a pretty windy day), and it came crashing down on my foot, breaking probably 3 toes. They were purple for a month or so.

I've had a healthy respect for palm trees ever since.

You wanna zone out on a thought? Coconuts grow on a specific type of palm tree. And they only grow 25 degrees N/S of the equator.

So...where was the first coconut tree? I mean, the coconuts themselves are seeds. They'd fall out of the tree, somehow wind up in the ocean, and get beached on some new island. And then germinate.

Look, I'll be the one to say it - the weather has SUCKED here since sometime overnight Friday/Saturday. With nothing more than a respite or two it's been raining constantly and at some point last evening it became cold, too. 40s and rainy is the worst!

Dark Sky is probably my favorite of the weather apps. If you view the radar image, and pinch / zoom out so that you can see the timeframe as far back as last Friday at 2 am, and then move the timeline forward to today, you can see this is all Ian.

And as far as I’m aware, Dark Sky is the only app that gives you that historical perspective.

Co-sign down here in MD. Started a little bit on TH, then Fri was pretty much on and off misting/sprinkling, and since then it's either raining or misting pretty much non-stop. I'm told the weather is supposed to break today.

We are headed to Dewey for a Breast Cancer 5k (but mostly to get drunk at Starboard) and I sure hope Ian fucks right off by then. This shit is guhnarly.
