Oh shit. He was on my company's board. He gave a great speech at one of our all-hands meetings earlier this year. Interesting guy.

Damn, I thought he died long ago. You kids don’t know, but years ago, pre-internet, CNN Sports Tonight was a legit competitor to ESPN Sportscenter in sports news.

I would say in our neck of the woods it was bigger - not everyone had ESPN in our hood but CNN was everywhere. I loved Sports Tonight; was the first of its kind i think - fond memories of my dad and I watching it together or even taping it if we couldn't stay up.

Totally forgot about it until just about now, but yeah I used to watch that. And remember when the Headline News channel was a necessary resource? They had a sports update at XX after the half hour or whatever.

25 and 55 past the hour? Those updates were basically the first reliable way to learn the score of an ongoing game if you weren't in a position to watch or listen to it.rass wrote: Thu Nov 10, 2022 10:22 amAnd remember when the Headline News channel was a necessary resource? When it was Charles and Hickman, it was actually better than SportsCenter. The guys were entertaining and CNN's highlights packages did a better job of telling the game story.sancarlos wrote: Thu Nov 10, 2022 12:57 am Damn, I thought he died long ago. Leafs Legend Borje Salming
Hero of my youth, my favourite player as a kid. Best gift I got for my bar mitzvah was a Leafs #21 shirt. 16 years as a Leaf - very often the only good player on brutal teams.
Saddest part is that it was ALS that just crushed him. He made his last appearance in Toronto at a pregame ceremony with other Leafs legends. It is just heartbreaking to watch. His team mate Darryl Sittler had to lift Salming's arm up to acknowledge the crowd...

They did that HOF ceremony just in time.
One of if not the first Swede of significance to play in the NHL. And they really were rough with him and dished out all the punishment in the old days, and he took it and gave it back.

The Leafs-Flyers playoff series in the 70s are still touchstones of my youth. Mention names like "Saleski, Hound Dog Kelly, Bridgman, Schultz, Watson" and we will froth at the mouth.degenerasian wrote: Thu Nov 24, 2022 6:16 pm They did that HOF ceremony just in time.
