Hope the Yankees saved enough money to buy those good balls again.

Guess the Yankees really had to sign him because you don't let 10 WAR guys walk out the door, but not sure he has the kind of body that is going to age very well. Don't suppose that's a very hot take.

But isn't that already baked into the contract on the Yankees' side? I think back to Ryan Howard deal, where many fans looked at the later years of paying him $25MM as not as much as an albatross because the turnstiles would just keep turning. Well... it didn't, and the Phillies had a slide into irrelevance that lasted the better part of the 2010s. But the Yankees and Dodgers are big enough that a $40MM anchor is simply the cost of doing business. Maybe I'm overestimating the largesse of those two franchises, but I don't think they really care, or if they do, $40MM isn't quite it.

Yeah, last year put them in a place where there are a looooooot of Judge fans, more so than Yankees fans who love Judge. I don't know how you put a monetary amount on simply not losing a player, but this probably reset that bar, atleast for MLB. Its obviously a bad baseball move in terms of life of the contract, but I'm not sure how they could afford not to resign him given the lack of a salary cap in place.

(I'd love to see their internal calcs on this, in terms of back half projections as well as factors like injury/insurance and the potential of him just walking away (walk up to a FO role) rather than be a Chris Davis level mess and taint his overall career.)

This is the worst December 7 in history.

And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

I mean, there are literally zero ABs after the 35th birthday for players of his body type (height/weight). This is perhaps the worst contract in MLB history. I hope that is one day sig worthy, but the smart play was to let him walk and start over.

Not disagreeing with the overall point, but isn't Frank Howard the closest physical comp? Sexson and Clark were both a lot thinner.

I read an article a couple months ago that had sourced material that noted Judge was over 25 lbs heavier than Howard, so you really have to expand the range to even get ABs at all for age 35 (looked for it briefly yesterday but couldn’t find it). The Athletic touched on all of this yesterday though.

I’m curious what else they will do, because this team as currently constructed was swept out of the ALCS like they didn’t belong.

Simply not playing the left side of their IF would be a good start towards a functioning lineup.

While the skillsets are different, his size isn't that crazy for a professional athlete in basketball or even football. SO it's possible he will still be able to mash and get walks late in his career. Sure he had some injuries but the past two years he's been pretty durable. I think modern conditioning would offset some of the expected decline re: his comps.

But he's also getting the C, right? So it's as much marketing as anything, not that you guys don't know that.

The “Captain” thing is just silly.

The question that begs to be asked is why Bloom didn’t offer up Boegarts at the TDL last season, when they were staring up from last place? Is Correa up next in Boston?

eta: the Yoshida signing was a good move for them. I wanted NY to move on him for LF, but what’re you gonna do.

Who will be the very highly-paid stud all-star 40 year-old, Judge or Bogaerts? Or, both? Maybe, neither?

As a San Jose Sharks fan, I know how these long-term contracts often look after a few years. And, as a Denver Bronco fan, how they sometimes look right away!

The nice thing is baseball has both the DH and no salary cap so, in theory, teams can make as many mistakes as they like without it restricting their ability to get better.

It's crazy how much starting pitchers are making in an era where they've never meant less. Like 12 million for a 5th starter who you're hoping can get you twice through the order.

I feel lik the top aces still do a lot more vis-a-vis the guys who can't go out and give you at least 5-6 innings three times every two weeks. And salaries are crazy all over, but a guy who can get you 150 innings still has a lot of value. Sure the number used to be 200 or 250.

Reports out of Boston Rafael Devers is likely headed to free agency next winter.

Imagine drafting/signing young talents like Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, and Rafael Devers and then getting rid of all three of them in their prime with nothing to show for it. Who are these guys? The Expos?

I think it's a since-deleted post from SB Nation's Astros blog Crawfish Boxes about bringing in Trevor Bauer to pitch for them since everyone already hates them anyway.

Ten umpires are retiring effective at the end of today, the most since in a single season 1999. No, Angel Hernandez is not one of them.

So the Red Sox just extended Rafael Devers on an 11 year, 331m deal. No opt-outs, and NTC was not included.

He's a very good hitter (just turned 26), but he's OK at 3B. He probably will be moved to 1B/DH before halfway through this deal. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing as a LH mashing in Fenway (with the shift going away).

I mean, Cabrera was a significantly better hitter though.

(This is the type of deal (prorated to 2017 dollars) that Cashman should've signed Judge after he went bonkers his rookie season).
